A caller says that he’s from the government and your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended. He sounds very professional. So you should do exactly what he says to fix things…right?

Wrong.

The FTC has gotten reports about scammers trying to trick people out of their personal information by telling them that they need to “reactivate” their supposedly “suspended” SSNs. The scammers say the SSN was suspended because of some connection to fraud or other criminal activity. They say to call a number to clear it up – where they’ll ask you for personal information.

Thing is, Social Security numbers do not get suspended. This is just a variation of a government imposter scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or other personal information. In this variation of the scheme, the caller pretends to be protecting you from a scam while he’s trying to lure you into one.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  • Never give out or confirm personal information over the phone, via email or on a website until you’ve checked out whoever is asking you for it.
  • Do not trust a name, phone number, or email address just because it seems to be connected with the government. Con artists use official-sounding names and may fake caller ID or email address information to make you trust them. Besides, the government normally contacts people by postal mail.
  • Contact government agencies directly, using telephone numbers and website addresses you know to be legitimate.

If someone has tried to steal your personal information by pretending to be from the government, report it to the FTC.

I just received 3 calls indicating my SS was "suspend". Each call was 40 minutes apart with 3 different numbers that were similar to each other. I'm awaiting for another one in 40 minutes if this is the trend.

Have received three calls today from this number 1-800-241-8697 and let them go to voicemail. They are all robocalls stating that my SS# has been suspended due to suspicious activity on my # and that if I want information regarding this case to press 1. I received three calls last week stating the same message but they were from a different 800 #. Obviously a scam as SS will not suspend your SS#. Please do not fall for this!

Earlier I got a call from an “unknown” number, I picked up and there was a bot that said that my SSN has been suspended due to suspicious activity. I checked to see if anyone else was getting these types of calls and there were plenty of them. so, If you get a call from an “Unknown” number just save yourself some time and ignore it honestly.

Just got a call outta Clifton Maryland 240 546-8840 sayin this is off Alex Smith and that my social security was being suspended due to fraudulent activity all across the USA. Mr. Alex Smith who says like he’s from India is a recorded message and doesn’t even say ssn just social security however I must call immediately or prosecution will shortly follow. Don’t give up or call any number back about this. It’s fake and unfortunate that something so terribly done can fool some people.

I received back to back calls today and yesterday from the following numbers: 1-936-587-6415 1-408-721-5716 Both had the same message that this was my last warning that SS was suspended due to suspicious activity. I pressed 1 and was told call denied. I called the number back and after 30 seconds a man with a foreign accent answered "hello", just like you would expect from an official government agency; I let him ask hello for about 45 seconds while I was on mute. I heard dozens of other voices in the background.

I just received a call from 1-800-034-3213 stating my SS # was being suspended because it was linked to suspicious activity in El Paso. The caller said I had 4 business banking accounts and 2 addresses in El Paso, TX and that I had been accused of money laundering and drug trafficking. She mentioned the FCC and the US Marshal but never the DEA. Anyway as she talking, I do a quick Google search and start reading from this site to her. She hung up. I'm filing it under SCAM. WTH???

I keep getting these calls as well. I block the number and it comes in from another number. The same automated message as everyone else: my social security number has been suspended due to fraudulent activity. Twice I have pressed 1 and told them this is not a thing and to stop trying to scam people. One hung up on me without a word, the other yelled at me and then hung up on me. Since they call from different numbers each time, how can we stop these calls? So frustrating.

I just got a call from one of these people. It started out with a robomessage, telling me my number was suspended, then told me to press 0 to speak to an operator. When the person got on the line, he asked if I received a call from them about my number being compromised. I told them no, then he asked, very rudely, why I called them then. I told them they just called me, and he said "Why are you lying to me?" At that point I hung up. It was very loud in the background, with numerous people talking loudly, and he barely spoke English. I had a strong suspicion this wasn't a real govt employee. He called from a California number 858-788-1283. It's not listed as fraudulent. Lol. These were the worst scammers ever. Guy did not possess the professionalism to be a govt employee, and what govt agency calls people like that?!
