A caller says that he’s from the government and your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended. He sounds very professional. So you should do exactly what he says to fix things…right?

Wrong.

The FTC has gotten reports about scammers trying to trick people out of their personal information by telling them that they need to “reactivate” their supposedly “suspended” SSNs. The scammers say the SSN was suspended because of some connection to fraud or other criminal activity. They say to call a number to clear it up – where they’ll ask you for personal information.

Thing is, Social Security numbers do not get suspended. This is just a variation of a government imposter scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or other personal information. In this variation of the scheme, the caller pretends to be protecting you from a scam while he’s trying to lure you into one.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  • Never give out or confirm personal information over the phone, via email or on a website until you’ve checked out whoever is asking you for it.
  • Do not trust a name, phone number, or email address just because it seems to be connected with the government. Con artists use official-sounding names and may fake caller ID or email address information to make you trust them. Besides, the government normally contacts people by postal mail.
  • Contact government agencies directly, using telephone numbers and website addresses you know to be legitimate.

If someone has tried to steal your personal information by pretending to be from the government, report it to the FTC.

I have been getting numerous calls today (JUNE 17,2019) saying that my SSN has been suspended. Posting down the numbers below: +1 (510) 112-7262 +1 (510) 112-7268 +1 (510) 112-7271 I had to click 1 to find the exact reason for this activity, but I hung up before that. I am aware that it is a scam, but it's really annoying because I am getting these calls continuously. Please do NOT go further or give any personal information.

4159601290 This number called and said my social security is on hold and that someone tried to use my number. They said that my number was use for a register car that was found in the border of Mexico and US. That it was a rental car and that it had drugs in it. That by the end of the day I’ll no longer be able to use my number anymore. I completely freaked out and started asking questions to a women that barley spoke English. They had asked personal questions and the only thing that was given was my name. They didn’t ask for my birthday or anything. I just looked up the number and it can still no longer be found.

A recording in a female tone "robotic or electronic"? Claim to be from the social security administration and she is letting me know that my social security number is being suspended by the"law enforcement agencies" Call back before anything "bad" happens. Most people know these calls are fake, but not everyone. I would hate to see someone scammed and I am writing this to help increase awareness, hopefully.

They were same pre recorded messages saying that my SSN is suspended because there was an unusual activity. If you wanna know more about this, press 1. I was like this must be one of those scam calls that people receive. It turns out that it is! Beware!

Thank you for your quote clear and direct answer to this ridiculous question. But it’s true, they do and at least tried with me. Left a message blah blah blah, and I said what I never heard of anything like this. Just block the number and don’t answer or reply. Like someone out of the blue is just gonna call you like that. I was looking also to see if there was a way to report the number itself, but it’s okay. Thank you, you need an answer that makes sense, look no further than the US Government, because that’s who should and will give you the answer that you need. Thank you and have a safe day!

I never received one of these fraudulent calls regarding Social Security until I set up MY Social Security online. The very next day I had one on my phone. The breach is with the Social Security website. I don't believe in coincidences. I received another today.

I have received 4 calls (voice mail, since my phone blocks all calls except from my contacts) from 3 different - almost the same - numbers all within a 2 hour time frame. All allegedly from the Social Security Administration with the same message that my social security number has been suspended due to suspicious activity. And my co-worker just got one from an 800 number at the same time! They are on a roll! 510-112-7497 510-112-7482 510-112-7476 Watch out!

The FTC "says..." I get so tired of hearing that over and over again. How about the FTC does! How about putting these criminals behind bars (no fines!) for a few years. That would mean something, simply saying it's a scam won't stop the problem!

There was a robotic woman's voice calling through the number +12347598116 repeating that the Inspector General of the SSA had suspended my number for no reason and it was their final warning (no calls previously). So +12347598116 is a scam robocall number.

I got the same call twice today. CallApp caller ID says they're spoofing from the actual SSA office. Middle eastern man answers the phone, asks what he can do for me, then says he's suspending my ssn. So I laughed hysterically. He makes an empty threat, and I hang up on him. Strange thing is, he has my actual name.
