A caller says that he’s from the government and your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended. He sounds very professional. So you should do exactly what he says to fix things…right?

Wrong.

The FTC has gotten reports about scammers trying to trick people out of their personal information by telling them that they need to “reactivate” their supposedly “suspended” SSNs. The scammers say the SSN was suspended because of some connection to fraud or other criminal activity. They say to call a number to clear it up – where they’ll ask you for personal information.

Thing is, Social Security numbers do not get suspended. This is just a variation of a government imposter scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or other personal information. In this variation of the scheme, the caller pretends to be protecting you from a scam while he’s trying to lure you into one.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  • Never give out or confirm personal information over the phone, via email or on a website until you’ve checked out whoever is asking you for it.
  • Do not trust a name, phone number, or email address just because it seems to be connected with the government. Con artists use official-sounding names and may fake caller ID or email address information to make you trust them. Besides, the government normally contacts people by postal mail.
  • Contact government agencies directly, using telephone numbers and website addresses you know to be legitimate.

If someone has tried to steal your personal information by pretending to be from the government, report it to the FTC.

Appears I rec’d one of these calls today and they left a message! First clue is they called at 7am LOL ( perhaps scammers need class in time zones) Secondly, SSN don’t get suspended! Sad thing is these crooks could get ahold of someone elderly or not knowledgeable in this and then mess up their credit etc The number is “ unknown” so reporting it is not an option!

I recieved 2 calls today from 1-800-772-1212 and 1-800-021-9225 that my social security was suspended due to suspicious activity. I pressed 1 to speak with the representative and I asked him if it was a scam and first of all he had an Indian accent and he was mad that i called him a scammer then i hung up. I will not be falling for this trap. I will be calling the social security office and filing a complaint or report. This is outrageous.

I loved when I asked the girl where she was calling from and she couldn't pronounce the state of Maryland correctly. So that raised a red flag for me. I just hung up and blocked the number. I received about 6 calls within 2 hours while I was working. One of the calls said it was coming from Congo.

Two calls yesterday [+1(866)931-7075]. I let them go to VM. Same message. I just thought- Good, suspend my SSN so I don’t have to pay taxes - Hahaha. No need to stress about how they get your number. Just hang up or let go to VM. I reported this one because I don’t want others to get scammed.

Well - I may have won the robocaller lottery! Just today, I have received 13 robocalls from area code 765 with varying numbers. All the same call about my SSN being suspended... yada yada yada. Call center in India and said they were from Maryland, California. I have filed a complaint with the FTC and now just dealing with blocking each 765 area code that comes in about every 30 minutes. UGH. SO ANGRY.
