Your Social Security number isn’t suspended. Ever.

A caller says that he’s from the government and your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended. He sounds very professional. So you should do exactly what he says to fix things…right?

Wrong.

The FTC has gotten reports about scammers trying to trick people out of their personal information by telling them that they need to “reactivate” their supposedly “suspended” SSNs. The scammers say the SSN was suspended because of some connection to fraud or other criminal activity. They say to call a number to clear it up – where they’ll ask you for personal information.

Thing is, Social Security numbers do not get suspended. This is just a variation of a government imposter scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or other personal information. In this variation of the scheme, the caller pretends to be protecting you from a scam while he’s trying to lure you into one.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  • Never give out or confirm personal information over the phone, via email or on a website until you’ve checked out whoever is asking you for it.
  • Do not trust a name, phone number, or email address just because it seems to be connected with the government. Con artists use official-sounding names and may fake caller ID or email address information to make you trust them. Besides, the government normally contacts people by postal mail.
  • Contact government agencies directly, using telephone numbers and website addresses you know to be legitimate.

If someone has tried to steal your personal information by pretending to be from the government, report it to the FTC.

The call I just received was from ‭(539) 333-4080‬.
Same thing. He said he is a police officer and that my SS# is being suspended because there seems to be fraud associated with it. I am supposed to call him back immediately. Right. No.

I received a call from 609-722-7213 saying that they were blocking my SS number and to kindly press 1 to contact their officer or kindly call them back. Oh and they also said, "thank you and have blessed day".

I just received a call also from a 0000000 phone number as if that seems legitimate, then the automated voice message and surprise surprise a very other side of the world sounding "social security officer". Also the background sounded like he was taking calls on the stock market floor. Yikes.

Call from 509-260-4431 saying it is going to be suspended...

Got a call like this from Massachusetts.
1-857-327-5995
I just hung up and googled it and found this.

Do not entertain any calls from the supposed "social security office" letting you know that your SSN was suspended. SCAM!

I got a recorded message on voicemail from (917) 1174822 saying my social security is suspended.

I've got about 10 calls just today...seems their picking up the pace a few months ago they called maybe 5 or 6 times. It freaked me out bad back then but soon after I found this site with tons of other people who had the same thing happen.

Within the past week, we have received two phone messages saying they are from SSA Dept. and my SSA # has been suspended due to suspicious activity. Calls were from the following phone numbers: 203-270-5276 and 205-246-2419. Obviously a scam so we did not return the calls.

I just got a social security suspension call from this number ‭(743) 233-3720‬... they said My number is up for scam alerts and fraud... and press a number to speak to a investor.... I blocked them... so don’t answer these scam crooks.

Just got a call saying my number was suspended. Here its he telephone number they called from and wanted me to call back. So did not call back.
210-757-0617.

Wanted to share so this helps someone in the future.

Call from 709-835-2684 February 20/2020 saying my social security card is suspended over suspicious activity.

I received a voicemail this morning 2/21/2020 from 1-877-764-3468 stating that a Federal Agent is attempting to contact me, and to please call them back.

I called back and immediately was connected to a real person claiming to be a Federal Agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration with badge number 07198. He ask for me by name (i don't know how he got this information) and stated that my social security number has been suspended... And then he asked me to confirm the last 4 digits of my social security number.

I don't believe this it is possible to suspend a social security number, so I hung up and now I am submitting this comment here about the scam. I hope this helps increase visibility for this issue.

The message they left said both my SSN and driver’s license are going to be blocked.
They called me from (888) 330-2574 twice today

I've got a call from this number 18337764123 and that was a scam as I'd absolutely file a complaint from what they were saying from the message that they said as they were "suspecting" me doing such "fraudulent activity" which I certainly never even make for them to assume that I'd ever do such a stupid thing like that!! I'm gonna go ahead and let that day to wrestle over while it all deserves for me to dismiss all of that drama so I can enjoy doing whatever the Hell I want in my life regardless of anything else.

“Hello this is Officer Cedrick Brown calling you from Social Security administration to inform you that your Social Security number is about the suspended due to some legal enforcement action that was ____ on your Social Security number you can call us back on 202-931-4168 I repeat it's 202-931-4168 thank you…” This is scammer. I’m better than you.

I've got a call today too. From 844-764-5435

Just got a voicemail from (331) 808-1418 saying my social security number has been suspended due to some reason and to call them back.

Got two of these calls today from robots. Both left the same voicemail message about my “suspended SSN”. Weird phone numbers:
888-000-1111
210-999-0000
I just chuckled and shook my head.

I've had 5 calls and messages about my SSN in the past 2 days with the same recording. I just delete. Just wish they would stop calling. Robocalls after so annoying.

I got a call from a guy over seas I asked what kind of activity they found and he couldn’t answer also asked me to verify my name date of birth and ssn so I replied back with you should already have that since you called me the phone number was 915-642-0704

I received a telephone call before 7 am, Washington state time. The voice mail message left told me my SS# had been suspended due to suspected fraudulent activity. I'm pretty sure this is a scam. I did not "press 1" as asked.
