The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

I’ve had 10 calls today all from different 1-800 numbers, all the same recorded voice threatening to send law enforcement to arrest me due to suspicious activity on my Social Security number. I’m extremely annoyed by the number of calls. I’ve blocked them all but they just use a different number the next time. Who has sold my number to these scammers?

Received a scam call. The caller said they were from SS and that my number had been suspended due to suspicious activity regarding my number. If I wanted to discuss this matter I could hit #1. I didn't answer this call, as I only answer calls from contacts. Not to mention, the number looked suspect. There is no prefix. This was a voicemail from: 1-866-000-7055

They called me today with a caller ID from Texas. I wished I googled their number before because I picked up the 2nd time they called me. I spoke with someone who asked for my first and last name, I didn't give it to them but they had it already. I wish I never picked up! What can they use with only my first and last name?

Good luck with trying to contact anyone by phone. You’ll likely waste time by prompts that have absolutely nothing to do with why you’re calling. Then you’ll be referred to another number to call, go through more of the same, then be asked to go to a website where you’re required to write a report about what happened. Hopefully you’ll have internet access and be computer literate!

My friend got this call as did my mother. She was concerned and asked my advice as I work at our local PD. I called the number back and as I was told the same rehearsed lines...I informed her I was LOE, she quickly hung up. I called three more times being hung up on each time. The fourth call was answered by a male, who identified me by name (ugh!) and proceeded to tell me how my SSN was being used in criminal activity. I informed him how things are actually done when there is criminal activity with SS# and after about 30 secs of him trying to convince me that I was in serious trouble he hung up. What's amazing to me is that he assumed THEY called me and I was returning the call...Something has to be done about this scamming. It is hurting alot of people.
