The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

IN the past week I have continued to receive many calls claiming this is the SSN office and we are suspending your social security number. Really then that means I do not have to pay taxes? What a scam, how inept do they think we are. I am so tired of these annoying calls. At night, at work during the day, and it continues. These people need to be arrested and throw away the KEY please. Thank YOU for listening to this regurgitated scenario. I think we are all just tired of this BS.

I just received a call today about 10 min ago claiming to from the Social Security Fraud Detection Department. The man gave his name and a rank (like he was a police detective or something). I can't recall the name because I was distracted by trying to write down the phone number he said I must call. It was a toll free number, as follows: 1-866-895-3946. I didn't call it. But, I was already online, so I immediately did a Google search for the SSA Fraudline reporting number, which lists a very different Tel. No. The caller sounds very authoritative and authentic. But, it IS a robo call, in which the person speaking cannot be asked any question. I plan to do a reverse number lookup and see what I may find. But, I see that SSA strongly advises to NOT comply with any telephone requests. Apparently, all actual problems will be declared to any individual SSA account holder by USPS ground mail in a letter of notification on official SSA Letterhead stationery. That is good to know.

I received two calls on my cellphone today, and they were several hours apart. One left a voicemail message saying there’s a problem with my social security, yada, yada, yada. Both calls supposedly came from 1-877-612-9421, Athens, GA. I didn’t answer or call them back. If it’s really from Social Security, they’ll contact me by mail.

I received a phone call this morning about my social security number being hacked so I wrote down the phone number which is one 800-202-3689 and they told me that there was fraudulent activity on my social security number one was drug trafficking the other one was money laundering so this young lady transferred me to a gentleman and he was from the DEA is what he told me and that I had to take care of this and he asked me for my social and I said no you are not getting my social because if you are from the Social Security Administration office you should already have it in front of you so therefore I told him I was going to report him and he said that if I didn't take care of this today that they were going to put a warrant for my arrest and I would be put in jail for 4 days and then from there go to prison for 10 years hahaha I'm not dealing with this because they tried this before
