The FTC is getting reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money. In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, he says it happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally. He then says your Social is blocked – but he might ask you for a fee to reactivate it, or to get a new number. And he will ask you to confirm your Social Security number.

In other variations, he says that somebody used your Social Security number to apply for credit cards, and you could lose your benefits. Or he might warn you that your bank account is about to be seized, that you need to withdraw your money, and that he’ll tell you how to keep it safe.

But all of these are scams. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SSA will never (ever) call and ask for your Social Security number. It won’t ask you to pay anything. And it won’t call to threaten your benefits.
  • Your caller ID might show the SSA’s real phone number (1-800-772-1213), but that’s not the real SSA calling. Computers make it easy to show any number on caller ID. You can’t trust what you see there.
  • Never give your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Don’t confirm the last 4 digits. And don’t give a bank account or credit card number – ever – to anybody who contacts you asking for it.
  • Remember that anyone who tells you to wire money, pay with a gift card, or send cash is a scammer. Always. No matter who they say they are.

If you’re worried about a call from someone who claims to be from the Social Security Administration, get off the phone. Then call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). If you’ve spotted a scam, then tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

Thank you for this information. My husband and I are one of the Texas residents who experienced this. The caller pretende that he was calling from SSA in Texas and made the big mistake of leaving a voice mail with a case number, etc. Reported info to SSA in Baltimore Maryland. The caller used his own number.

Received, phone call from (513) 906-5567, asking to verify The last four of my social security #. Caller was very professional and unlike many scams they nearly appeared legit! I’m sure I was provided a bogus name when asked. Scary thing is they knew a lot of personal information and kept asking I confirm and then give the rest of the social. Don’t even speak the word YES. It’s been explained to me these scammers record your voice for the purpose of later using during calls to automated systems. while in the process of scamming People they can sometimes “confirm” or agree Using the targets recorded voice.

Well, this is my second scam call, 1 year apart. The caller, officer brown, told me someone had been using my #, and I was in big trouble, a drug and money laundering scheme. He asked my name, I said you called me, you should know my name, he asked if the address he had on file was correct- it was an old address. I tell you these people!

Hi I received that call favorite person that act like they were social security and she was a Chinese lady and the number was a Texas number that when they called my cell phone they asked me if they were talking to the right name that they were calling and I said yeah what happened and they said what we wanted to see if you would qualify for social security disability if you can get with your information but I told her let me tell you something I never received these calls and another thing they wouldn't be calling you asking for this information because it will send you a letter from the main office and she said after work oh I can't help you at this time and I told her you don't need to help me because I already receive the benefits and another thing it's cause I never received them till right now that you call but likely that everybody's trying to scam people in this time for what's going on for the covid-19 and there will be a lot of scammers hopefully they do catch these people soon because they don't deserve to be doing stuff like this to innocent people and God is the only when they don't punish them by doing this just some innocent people so I asked everybody to keep their head up and always save the numbers that people like this call and would never your social security Office reopens because they're closed at this time because of covid-19 whenever they reopen are you have to go thank you I'm that number so they can call personally so they can catch them sooner thank you and have a blessed day God bless you be safe

I got a call today from what sounded like a robot saying it was the Social Security Administration and that there has been fraudulent activity linked to my SSN and to call them at 272-777-4218. I called back and it went to a huge call center and hung up each time around 5 seconds into the call. Luckily for me I didn't get through as thought it sounded very fishy and am glad I checked and saw SSA will never call. So, here's another number they're apparently using to try to scam people. Stay safe everyone!

I received a phone call from (616) 257-6683 with a recorded voice saying my social security services would be ceased due to criminal activity on my account. I was told to press "1" to speak to an agent. I pressed "1" and a man with an Eastern Indian voice came on (not a recording) and asked for my SS#. I told him that this was a scam call and I was going to report him, and HE hung up on me. I don't appreciate this scam call because I am getting ready to have major surgery in the next couple weeks and I am already stressed out.

Got a robo call today about illegal activity in Texas linked to my ss#. They used a number that was nearly identical to my phone number on the caller id and said they were shutting off my ss# for fraud. Asked me to press 1 to speak with a SSA representative. I received a call from 469-709-1993, they left a voicemail. I called the number back and a gentleman answered and there was a lot of background noise. He asked for my name, which I provided, then he asked for the last four digits of SSN. I did not give to him, I said you should have that information and I will verify. He insisted I give the last four of SSN, I never did. There was a lot of background noise of other people talking, I said I think if this is the SS Admin I wouldn't be hearing other people talk. I then challenged the guy, asking why he would be calling me vs sending a letter. He indicated the SS Admin has sent letters and I did not respond, that's what prompted the call. I told him, "I think this is a scam and you are not an authorized employee of the SS Admin", he hung up. I've tried calling back and he will not answer the phone.
