Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I received a phone call with an automated woman's voice telling me that my social security card was about to be suspended because of suspicious activity. I pressed 1 to be connected and spoke with someone who answered the calle with "Social Security Administration." I said, "Hello Social Security Adminstration, what is your name?" He said his name was Eric Brave. He had a Spanish accent. I told him I was very worried about what could be wrong with my social security card but I must have sounded suspicious patronizing because he hung up. The phone number on caller ID was +1 825 903 8471. I couldn't call that number back though so it's probably a Google number.

I got a call to my cell phone stating that I needed to return a call to 1-814-667-0718 to avoid legal action. When I called the number from my office phone, a person with a foreign accent answered and said "Social Security, may I help you?". I could hear a lot of other people talking in the background and it sounded like what you hear at a call center.

My 88 year old mother who lives with me and my wife receives scam calls on her landline on a daily basis. She screens her calls through an answering machine & doesn’t answer unless it someone she knows. I feel it’s the responsibility of friends and family to remind the vulnerable ones in our circle how to handle these calls. It’s at epidemic levels right now coming from every mode of communication including scam emails text messages mail phone calls and even knocking on your door. Just can’t let your guard down.

For those that get the calls - HANG UP. Provide NO information to ANYONE you don’t know personally and specifically trust with the information. NO government agency will EVER call you asking for any sensitive information (your SSN, any banking info, etc.) Additionally, if ANY law enforcement agency calls saying there is a warrant for your arrest and if you don’t pay them a certain amount by giving your bank number or going and getting Green Dot cards at CVS/Walgreens/Rite Aid, then you will be placed under arrest and taken to jail, call their bluff and tell them to come to your door with the warrant. Working for a law enforcement agency, and to reiterate what a prior poster already said, you will know there is a warrant for you only if and when officers show up at your door IN PERSON with said warrant for your arrest. And I assure you, we do NOT take money in lieu of jail time. However, due to the frequency of these scams, if you DO fall for one of them, understand that all you will most likely get is a report taken so that you can submit it to your bank. Investigating these people, who are masking their numbers and using burner phones with spoofed numbers, is almost always fruitless. As someone else said, the best way to stop this is to educate people so there isn’t fear of these people calling, which is just what they want. They want you to be afraid and to stop thinking rationally and logically about what they’re asking of you. I had a call where a girl was kept on the phone and so panicked the whole time, they got 32k from her. She was a lawyer and very intelligent, but she was SCARED and they didn’t give her time to process how irrational what they were asking of her was. PLEASE DO NOT END UP LIKE THIS. This crime is 100% preventable. Tell your friends and family members. Keep yourselves and your property secure. Change passwords. Don’t share information. HANG UP THE PHONE ON ANYONE THREATENING TO BE FROM THE GOVERNMENT ASKING FOR MONEY. Thank you and that’s all.

Why is our government allowing this activity? I get these calls all the time, sometimes 2-3 a day. If you follow a prompt, it's an english-speaking individual with an Indian accent. This is a direct attack on American senior citizens by a foreign entity.
