Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

This number just called the house phone 1-803-102-6158. Don't know who they're calling for and the message was cut off. I'd read out just said Unavailable. Message caught was that your social security has been suspended for suspicious activity, but they never gave a call back number. I know it's a Scam and I hope this helps unsuspecting people who are on SSI to Not answer these trolls who are looking for an easy pay day. Please be safe and don't fall for these creeps!

2/25/2020- I received a call from a what sounded like a filipino case officer from the bureau of investigations by the name of Richard Benny. Badge # 02950240. He stated my SS# was going to be suspended and that I have been flagged for drug trafficking and money laundering in Mexico and Columbia. While I did not share personal information at all with the person, I took down all the information. He called from 207.725.0504. I then received a call from his "colleague"- from 202.475-7700. This second caller was trying to confirm that he was a legitimate government employee- by calling from the SSA #- so he hung up and called me back - 7 times! I did not answer.

The person said there was suspicious financial activity from three states; Florida, Ohio and another one. He said his name was Justin Cooper and he was calling from Cupertino, California. Thankfully, I questioned him and he hung up. I then called Apple and they said some of their customers were getting calls like this.

I just got a call from 877 657 0519. It said the SSN was under federal investigation. This was their second attempt to call me and not responding would be seen as evading investigation (I think they called last night but it was too quiet to hear). Anyhow, it happened at the worst moment, so I was not fully aware and gabe them my full name before I realized how absurd the claim is. In addition to looking up the number online, I asked what crime my SSN was supposedly associated with and they could not.give an answer. Hopefully they don't get more sophisticated.

10:44 am on 02_28_20 from (916)-586-7919 Robo (female voice) stating I have legal claims against my social security number. I hung up. This reminded me of contacting my local FBI office back in 2004 about constant scam calls and they said they could not do anything as the caller was calling in from outside the US and routing their calls through a Las Vegas phone number. I said that really gave me secure feelings that after 9/11 they were admitting they had no way to stop incoming calls or tracing them?
