Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

There are free ways to block calls on your mobile phone and land line phone. This FTC article tells how to check with your carrier, download a call blocking app for a mobile phone, use built-in features on your phone, or install a call-blocking device on a traditional landline phone.

Just received a voicemail from 844-230-6729. They said they were from the department of social security administration and the reason for their call was they have to inform me that there is a legal enforcement action filled on my SS# for criminal activities so before this matter goes to federal court, and get me arrested, i would need to call them back

Hi, I received a voicemail and calls from an person saying they were form the SSA saying their was fraudulent activity on my account. I asked the person for their name and identification number at the SSA and they quickly got defensive and hung up. I think you should stop these people because they harass Americans. The number they called from was 907-881-7824. They left a voicemail calling from 225-255-4041 saying to call back 650-514-1128. Please stop these scammers.

The call came from 877 767 2492 The caller left a message telling me fraudulent activity was detected using my Social Security and I should call back. I called SS and recieved only a recorded message and then a hang up. I called a local SS office and was told they couldn't help me. They referred me to check my credit report. We should not have to deal with such lack of government help. Al

I'm thinking about baiting them with a phony ss# (666-66-6666) - is there anyway this can be coordinated, so *YOU* actually do something about these scammers? I was pretty convinced, immediately, that it was a scam (Officer Nancy GaryHill, SS# 'suspended' [I've got 16 years until I'm 68, no SSDI here]). Hrmph. Prolly *NOT*

318-706-1775 I think I got scammed what do I do now? Went against my gut instinct. They claimed to be with the authorities social security of Texas investigating SSN fraud and use of my SS number. They said it was associated with drug trafficking and money laundering. Papers from banks and credit were found and drugs. Something of a car which had drugs and blood in El Paso. They were going to make my SSN void , invalid so the charges would not be associated to me if I approved. I said I would not approve anything without documents. Went on to say they sent it to what was my brothers address even after verifying my address. I ended up hanging up on him. Name JOHN Wang. Even gave a badge number and case ID.
