Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I received phone calls today saying the same threats. The person pretends to be an officer. As I am new here, I don't know anything yet, so he took some information from me because I thought they were really federal officers. He even asked me to give him the 4 last numbers of my social security number but fortunately I didn't have them in memory. But I am very worried because I told them the two last numbers. Please I need your help.

As of March 9th, 2020...I received three calls from an officer Amanda Burns that my SS number has been suspiciously used in the Northeastern part of Texas....To talk with Officer Burns press 1. She repeats herself this is Officer Burns, press 1. I haven't received any 1 800 number from a man's voice...As a senior citizen, it's sad how scammer is taking us to the cleaners. Due to the lack of knowledge of not knowing how to use the internet...The elderly are an easy target...This growing problem will continue as long as the scammers are one step head....It'll be an never ending battle ...

Why can't law enforcement shut down these scammers? I've gotten several different calls from them and I'm sure every other American has too. The phone companies and FTC must do a better job of finding and prosecuting these people. They are a menace to society.

I have been receiving many calls on different numbers. I don’t answer and then block the number. It’s really annoying the amount of calls I am getting every day. I haven’t been defrauded because I don’t answer the calls. I know I have done nothing wrong so please think about what they are saying to you. Do not believe them and remember to check out the SSA website for the latest scams.

Received a call from +12315607173, couldn’t take the call. They left a VM similar to the description in the summary of this blog and to call back at +12029313853. I was curious and called back, the guy straight away asked my full name and the last 4 digits of my social. When I started asking them to questions like which department they belong to, the place they call from - the person just hung up. Tried calling back, and same thing. They hung up once I started asking questions. Totally insane.

Just got a SCAM call from 217 636 3934. I called back and tried to ask a couple questions about how their process works, and they just hung up on me. I called again and asked them to take my number off their list, not even pretending to be fooled. The person who picked up told me to change my ringtone if I didn't know how to unsubscribe from a number. This number is definitely a scam!!

For fun, let them xfer me to an agent. She quickly intro'd herself & asked ti whom she is speaking. I explained that I was called by them & xferred to her for a DEA warrant. I was told I needed to tell her my name & I repeated my orevious statement. She actually raised her voice & got "forceful" in telling I needed to identify myself immediately. When I asked for her agent and/or govt ID # she hung up. Called back from a diff land line phone (NOT associated w my home address cuz I was bored at the time) & auto voice says "ETime Phone, enter badge #". Yet again...all "foreign accents" beware & do not hive 1 single piece of info...even your name!
