Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

My call came in from a local number of (678) 360-2303 the call was with a computer voice exactly like the recording on this page, but asked that I remain on the phone for one of their representatives. when a man with a heavy foreign accent answered he identified himself as social security officer I informed him that this call was being recorded so that I may send to the FBI and social security administration. His English became perfect as he treated me with bodily harm and cussed me out.

I just received one of these phone calls as well it came up under a local wireless number and then ask me to press a number 1 to be connected to a local representative something needs to be done to stop this because too many people are falling for the scam and I thought the government and the FTC we're supposed to protect the general public not just put out a warning but actually stopped what's going on but I guess that's too complicated to do

Had a similar experience yesterday and today from (820) 300-0994 and very similar messages. Wasn't panic-inducing just FURY-inducing. I called back once and got (a very broken English-sounding), "Social Security Headquarters, how may I assist you?" Hung up, called back again and got a recording saying, "We are unable to connect your call. Please dial *611 then ( a string of numbers)..." I blocked the number. FTC, please for the love of all that remains of dignity, get on this.

‭+1 (239) 310-0291‬ This was the number that called me twice. I told the man I knew it was a scam and he repeatedly asked me for my social security number to “Verify my account”. I again told him absolutely not and he hung up on me. I called back and told him screw you, this is so messed up. They pretend legal action will be taken blah blah. DO NOT TRUST OR GIVE ANY INFO AT ALL. They even knew my name. ITS FAKE.

ASKING QUESTIONS can save you your money! I never heard of this scam until I received a call today from 332 456 7830 with this same VM. I pressed 1 as requested to speak to a person. 1st red flag: Sounded like the call was from a call center. 2nd red flag: I asked to verify their phone number in case we got disconnected - I was given 1-800 722-1213 number and it was mentioned sooo quick that if a person doesn't pay attention they won't realize this is NOT a SSA number that was given. SSA number is 1-800 772-1213. 3rd flag - I asked to verify their office address and they couldn't. How can a SSA worker that goes to an office every day (based on the background sound they are not working from home) not provide the address of their office? Woodlawn, MD outside of Baltimore is the response I got. When I asked for a street number - I was told "Have a good day!"
