Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

received a similar announcement from 240-639-6558, Laurel MD. Just said press 1 to talk to an agent. I hung up. I usually don't answer unknown numbers but I just got a new job and a few locations are doing background checks and other things before I start so I have to answer. Weird thing is I just submitted some documents that required my ssn to the background company. Weird timing.

1-915-200-7909 is the number i got a call from this morning. I was suspicious but it sounded so real and I believed it. I was not aware of this scam going on. They say all the right things to scare a person. Until I found this page I was still wondering if it was a scam or not. Problem is they had me verify last four digits of my ss number and I did. They also had me tell them how much money was in my accts. Unless you have had one of these calls your self you will not understand how terrified I was that this was real. What triggered me was when he asked me to download a Cash App I didn't even know what that was and I almost did. But something told me hell no..and i did not do that. I will say again I was still unsure if it was for real or not until i found this page...thank you god for leading me here I was a nervous wreck until I read this...

The major issue with this scam is they are now using spoofed local numbers, so they may be using other people's legitimate phone numbers to call you from, you block and report the number of someone who didn't actually call you. I have blocked 35 local cell numbers in the past week and reported, but they aren't the real phone numbers.

I got a SS scam call today too, exactly like many others here. Caller ID said it was from (607) 791-6540. Claimed to be from the ‘department of Social Security Administration’, said that my SSN number is being suspended because they found some suspicious activity’, and ‘if you want to know about this case, press 1.’ Obvious scam, just hung up then blocked that number.

They are very active today. Called five times and I expect they will continue to call even though I hang up the telephone. I will not be answering the phone when I am alerted to this number. Hopefully that will stop the calls. Be alert! I feel badly if they trick a senior citizen into thinking that their social security card has been compromised.
