This is what a Social Security scam sounds like

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at

My sister recieved a call from "United States Management Services" who claim they can get her $800 more a month from Social Security because she has an excellent credit score. They only take the first month's difference as their fee. They already knew her ss number and specific things that would be on her credit report. Anyone heard of this? I'm sure she's been scammed. I told her to call them back and ask for their claims in writing.

I received the same voicemail. When I called, they said my SS# was used for money laundering and drug trafficking and they were going to suspend my SS#. When I told them this felt like a scam they got very defensive and hung up. I paid to find out who the number which they called from, (806) 639-5871, was listed under. It is Queen Spa Nail. I called the number again and they answered, "Social Security Administration". I said, "I thought this was Queen Spa Nail?" She said, "Oh you looking for spa!" and hung up. I immediately received another phone call with the same recording from a different number, 870-450-7365.

More needs to be done to stop these callers. Majority of them have foreign accents. My Dad’s phone number is unlisted and they still call. These scammers will also call from local numbers that they were able to get and clone. I try to record my Dad talking to them. I have one good recording. Also these letters of you will win money if you mail back with money. What a waste of paper!

The recording requested I call them at the number that showed up on the caller ID, which was 877-245-5902. I called and at first a recording answered saying my call would be answered in the order it was received. Then a man came on the line introducing himself as a social security rep. He kept asking for my name and when I wouldn't give it to him he hung up on me! SCAMMERS!

9/12/2020 received a call today. i just let it ring.....

Please do not leave them several messages with very choice words that would make even a hardened criminal cringe. This may be someone Number.

Voice mail message fragment from 844-741-0370 - received on Sept. 14, 2020 @12:04 PM EDT:
"...intentional crime an arrest warrant will be issued under your name for a crime investigation so before we stop your banking and government services kindly call back to connect your call to Social Security officer to resolve the case file yourself before it goes to court house call back urgent..."
-- Low quality female synthesized voice. Played as string of words, with no pauses, inflection, or intonation beyond what one would get from an old digital voice chip circa early to mid 1990's. Definitely not from a prerecorded human voice.

Just received call from our area code (417) re: social security card used in criminal case in Texas. Didn’t respond as requested, let message play out. First robo call in months. Checking with social security.

I have received the same call from ph no 231-323-2566. I had ignored the call

Today I received a call with a similar message, please be aware. The message recorded said that a legal action will be activated against me and also to press a pound key on my phone to talk with a representative.

Howdy got calls with the exact automated voicemail except a female voice. All from Alhambra, CA. As soon as I mentioned the word scam they hung up immediately. Blocked them on my phone but just thought I leave their numbers below for others to avoid this scam. Thank you.

Is there not anyway for the government to track these people down and stop this scam. I have gotten 5 calls just this morning.

I have been getting calls from a hispanic woman about social security. It goes like this, "esta es una llamada ... oprima el numero 1 para ser transferido. In English it says, "This is a call.... press the number 1 to be transferred. It then gives you the option to press 2 to stop getting calls. And it does not work. So today I called them and the lady hanged up on me. I tried calling back and supposably they said wrong number.

Got the call today, 4 times asking me to call back. 507-593-7110 is the number I had on caller id. Just informational

Just received one of these calls today so unfortunately it looks like these scam calls are still happening so please be aware!

I don't know if I was lucky or this how they get your last 4 digits of SS number
I received a call this morning the caller ID was ‭+1 (215) 478-7872‬
I answered and the caller identified himself as a Social Security Administration agent

The reason I answered the call because the caller ID was local and I have an active transaction with SSA I am receiving disability benefits and in process of completing an update on my disability condition and I communicated with the local office a few times in the last month in the course of completing the forms they sent. So I thought it could be related and was worried my benefits get effective.
I asked him which office he replied Austin Texas.
he then asked my name to pull my file I gave him my name
he read my address correctly I did not give him my address.
he asked the last 4 digits of my social security number I gave him the numbers only last 4 digits.
he then said are you sure? it is not and he repeated my last four digits but one digit was not correct. I replied no not correct. He then he said why are you lying I replied why I am what “lying” he hang up the phone.
I realized then it may be a fraudulent call I did not expect an SSA agent to call me a liar. I was going to hang up at that point but they did themselves
I check on the internet and found others revived similar calls the same number and they are a fraud. I thought to share the experience. I don't know if they now have my correct last 4 digits or i was lucky or they do it intentionally at leadt i did not give them money but i am concerned.

This number came up 914-339-9635 but when I looked it up it is a persons number. Not sure if that person made the call, but anyway it is not the SSA the message also sound like a real person not a robot.

The scammers are now using local numbers as well
