Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Before I changed my number about a month ago, I was getting blown up with non stop calls like this and I would just hang up and block the number but they would continue from a new number every time. Thankfully I knew better and did not give them any info.

The caller was a recording of a male monotone voice in English, claiming that they detected fraudulent activity with my Social Security number and that they will suspend it. The recording was urging me to press 1 for more options. I did not, instead, I hung up. I received that call from this number: (787)372-4892

I just received a call from 8801701245663. I thought it was quite a strange number. The recording said there was criminal behavior attached to my social security number and to call a 470 number that was said so fast I could not write it down. I will not be calling the number obviously. I blocked the number I just wanted to share my experience today.

I want to report a scam. I received a call from (510) 565-0142, saying my SSN is suspended. I asked to verify her profile, she told me her name is Olivia Turner, Badge number 7740201, Office located at 6401 security blvd, Maryland. She asked my full name to pull my profile, then I asked her to tell me what is the last four digit of SSN she saw on my profile, she hung up.

I can't believe I fell for the obvious scam on which I had hung up so many times before. I actually stupidly gave info away and have no one to blame but myself for falling into a web of a threat that was bogus. Now I have to figure out how to protect my small amount of assets. I am really scared because I can lose my house. So what am I to do now to prevent that? Can I get an answer that is helpful? Thank you.

307-316-3507 Scammer with an Indian accent said he was from the social security administration and that he had an affidavit for my arrest because someone was committing crimes using my SS#. I asked him to tell me my SS# number, and he couldn't tell me. I called him a scammer and laughed at him. 2 minutes later another Indian accent guy called me, but from a Plano Police Department phone number and told me that they had a warrant for my arrest and I need to come down the police station right now. Apparently they are using apps to put any number they want into the caller ID. Scammers are putrid.

Got a call from 708-317-5109 saying they are SSA. I called them back and it goes to a voice mail like SSA does not have anybody there to answer phones. Both people were talking arrest warrants and FBI and Treasury. They both had foreign sounding voices which is another tip.
