This is what a Social Security scam sounds like

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.

The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspended your social security number because we found some suspicious activity. So if you want to know about this case, just press one. Just received similar call from: 646-975-7893 I do not answer calls not in my contact list. Surprised they left the following message: "This call is from the Department of social security administration. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspended your social security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press one. Thank you." I did not call back.

I just received a call a call from Texas today, 04/25/19. They called to inform me that this is Social Security calling to let me know that this is their final attempt to reach me and my Social Security will be suspended if I didn’t called them back by the end of the day at (512)234-4043! I knew it was a scammer as soon as the recording started because Social Security doesn’t handle business that way!

I received a call today from SSA phone number 281-220-3443, stating that a federal officer was awaiting for me to step out of my place of employment to arrest me if I didn't pay this John Rhoadson person. Sounded to me alot like the IRS scam. I am currently on hold with the REAL SSA to make sure that my SSN is def. okay.

My son and I both received a call today....couldn't understand the accent. He told my son he was going to be prosecuted for fraud and need his social number. Identified self as SOC sec fraud Dept.....the caller called me and said my social security number would be suspended but he couldn't tell me my name when I asked. He called from 7604375283! I knew it was a scam and have reported to the Attorney general.

7142524663 new SSN scam phone number (714)252-4663

I just received a call from robotic lady saying my social security is being blocked due to suspicious activities and if I want to speak to someone press 1. # was 8660871213.

so one of my friends got a voicemail from someone trying to get their SSC number and started to talk about criminal charges and fraudulent activity.

I got the same call a few minutes ago but it went to voicemail. It is a robotic male voice threatening to suspend my SSN due to suspicious activity, the number I got two calls from is 877-984-5327

Got mine today. $10,000,000? That's crazy. Praying on the elderly and disabled. Why doesn't the Federal Trade Commission do something about this?

Watch out! Social security scam from +1(310)359-9869 Malibu, CA.

Why it is so easy to hack our phone system? What about legislation to make our telecoms carriers (which are (rolling in money) responsible for:
a) managing FREE websites where we can report and look up bogus scan caller numbers
b) implementing technology that makes it impossible to display fake numbers when calling, or to display a FAKE local exchange when calling long distance.
c) implementing technology that makes it easier to trace and CATCH these criminals.
Surely our technology is not so pathetic as it seems now, that these scammers operate at will, proliferating like germs and stealing millions from vulnerable people?
FTC what are you doing about this?

Awesome. Thanks for confirmation of this scam. This isn't the same script I heard, but it's the same voice.

Got a similar scam call from 1-866-106-1213. Please mark this number and don't fall victim of this scam.

i just received a call from 319-030-6899 stating that my SS # has been suspended. please be aware.

I received a call today from (773) 279-5953. The message left was as follows: "This call is from the Department of Social Security Administration. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity, so if you want to know about this case just press one thank you.

Clearly, the improper name of SSA ("Department of...") and the errors in grammar were clear signs of a scam. I also have a service from my mobile phone provider that indicated the call was from a Spam Risk number. Glad I checked this site as well. Be careful everyone. The government never calls you to request anything to do with your SSN or taxes.

I got a call and voicemail yesterday and today. They keep calling. Definite scam from this number
866-627-6996. Here’s the transcript.

“To inform you that we _________________ Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press one thank you…”

How come law enforcement couldn't look int this kind of phone scams? They've got the phone numbers that they can confirm to find out who's the owner. They can call them and actually confirm their scam themselves and put them out of their busuness.

Got a call today from (888) 810-0382 and the call sounded very similar to other ones on this feed. I sent it to voicemail because I never answer phone calls where I don't recognize the number or caller ID, and it left a message. Robotic, claimed it was from the SSA, and asked me to press 1 for more info. Glad I found this page!
