Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

This happened to me yesterday. Seemed so real. I called back in a panic. They were very well orchestrated. Very convincing. Told me I was involved in money laundering and drug trafficking in Texas. Said everything was gonna get seized. They had accents I couldn’t recognize. Gave me their ID numbers and everything. Told me the feds were gonna arrest me with a warrant. It hot really weird when the dude said I needed to take a photo of my ID and forward it to another number. That was a huge red flag. I said I can do that later, I was at work. He said if I hang up the phone, agents were coming to arrest me at my home. I paused for the longest 20 seconds of my life. He ended up hanging up on me. Wish it knew of these scams before that 30 minute phone call. I’m so much wiser today!

Just a phone call from these scammers again. They have been harassing me for months from a rash of different phone numbers with the same message about my social security number being in jeopardy, etc. The moment I block one number, the sick losers behind this scam use a different number. Why doesn't the FBI track these scammers down, and prosecute them?

1-800-942-1558 has been calling me and leaving messages with robotic voice "call our department .... suspicious activity" and when you call back, they answer "Social Security Administration" ... they somehow knew my full name (first middle and last) but I said it wasn't me, and they were yelling and cussing. Yea, I doubt this is a real government agency by their abusive language. I used my video camera to record the calls and am going to put up a video on youtube. I called back a few times asking them to stop calling me, and asking for the nature of the call. They didn't make sense, they said they would suspend something then hung up, so I called back asking what they were suspending and one man just kept repeating some weird chant in another language. Again, totally believeable this is an American Government Agency. I filed this phone number with the FTC, I hope they get to the bottom. No they didn't get money from me, just made threats that made no sense, but we shouldn't have to endure the abuse.

I sleep during the day, but missed a call and received this text. “18778901171 Depositing new message To inform you that there is a legal enforcement action has been filed on your social security number for fraudulent activity. So when you get this message speak to our office or or kindly call us back on our hotline number 877-890-1171. I repeat that is 877-890-1171. Don't disregard this notice and to return the call before we begin with the legal proceedings against you. Thank you.. Click here: 14699825000 to listen to full voice message.“ I called to note the person claimed to be an SSA agent in a noisy telecom center. They had a heavy accent and were asking for my name, phone number and birthdate. I refused to repeat my birthdate and told them flat out, “I will not repeat my birthdate, since it seems you are not verifying against records that you should already have and I will not provide my SSN. Instead, I think I’ll call the authorities directly as I am currently in bankruptcy,” and hung up, called the local SSA office to learn of the scam, then called my attorney to give them notice for possible fraudulent activities. Never repeat personal information over the phone to strangers. Never provide SSN or bank account numbers over the phone. If they need that information, you have better have sat down face-to-face with the person. Period.

I have been on SSI for years since1987 and in 2014 I just out of the blue I started getting letters from what I reallly thought was from SSA. And I was receiving $800.00 about and then I was told that I would be getting $345.00 because I had received an overpayment of over $5000.00. And then last summer I got two months of $675.00 and then on Halloween of last yr I received $3000.00 about and never guess that the last two months I didn't get my SSI benefits because of b.s
