Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just received a message on my cell phone from 800-934-2338. The message read, "suspected for fraudulent activity so once you get this message kindly call us back as soon as possible on our number before we begin with the legal proceedings. Again that is 800-934-2338." I called the number back even though I knew it was fraudulent to see what they would ask. A man with a heavy middle eastern accent answered stating I was calling the social security office and the office of a name I could not understand. He asked for my full name and I told him the SS office would not make these types of calls. I told him I would rather call a legitimate number to get information and he said he was just trying to help me before they started legal proceedings. I hung up on the idiot.

VM from 805-200-3881 (Oxnard,CA). I never answer calls from numbers I don’t recognize. Important calls will leave a message. No msg is usually a sales call anyhow. Scammers are looking for ‘active’ numbers. If you answer or block or call back, they know it’s an active number and they will continue to call. ‘Do not call’ lists are published so that legit companies won’t call. Scammers see the list as active numbers and use it as a pre-screened list of active numbers. New Phone technology allows users to send any caller ID they want. Case in point, I got a call from my own number, really?!? They will often use a caller number from within your area, to make it look like a local call, to trick you to answer. If the caller says they’re from your bank or insurance or local store and ask you to verify your private info, hang up and call the company with numbers you have, say on the back of your bank card or from a credit card statement. Never confirm private information to someone who is calling you. My insurance company calls to check on medical services, but I won’t confirm my info with them, they could be scammers. Instead I call the number I already have. Never call a number the caller gives you, it could be another number for their scam. No agency will call you to threaten legal action for some made up legal infraction, or track your social security number or bank fraud. Scammers will not send info via mail as that is a federal offense and they don’t want the feds involved. Your private information belongs to you. You are not required to validate your info with anyone who calls you! If you think the call might be valid ( bank, CC company, etc), then hang up and call the number you already have on file for them. ... and keep reporting the scammers to let FTC know how large this problem is!

I am in NC and have received 3 calls from 888-577-6906 today saying that my SS# has been suspended due to fraudulent activity and to press '1' to hear more about "the case". First time I received the call I pressed '1' and the call was then disconnected, never spoke with anyone. Tried calling the SSA but was not able to reach a live person.

Just got a similar call today from this # 866-727-6945. They left a voicemail stating they were starting legal procedures on my social security number due to fraudulent activity and I needed to call back immediately. I called them back and told them I was reporting them as a scam. I received numerous calls last year from the IRS scammers. I just blocked the numbers after listening to their voice mails. Will do the same here. They stop calling after awhile.

I just got a call this afternoon from Annapolis, MD 410-849-6735. It was someone with a middle eastern accent who told me my SSN was going to be suspended and my bank accounts frozen for suspicious and fraudulent activity. I told him I didn’t believe him and asked him what my name and SSN was. He gave me my first name but that was all. I refused to give him any information and he hung up on me!

Message on voice-mail today from 850-280-0235, woman's voice, saying she was from SSA and that I would be in trouble if I didn't call back, would have to appear before the magistrate (?), and was subject to arrest. I knew it was fraud from the git-go, but wanted to put the phone number out there in hopes of someone tracking down this operation. Stay suspicious, y'all!

The initial threat really scared me, but I will let SSA come to my home to notify me if I have done something wrong.

Wow! Just got this call from a number with my same area code. The message was brief and recorded saying that my SSN was suspended, then gave the option to press 1 to speak with someone... so I did. I actually recognized the voice from a scam call i got a few months ago. Definite accent, and last time he pretended to get his supervisor on the line for me... waited 5 seconds and changed his voice. Hahaha so this time around I asked where are you located? Maryland. Why did I get a call from a California number? Because the system calls according to your area code. You know I realize a social security number cannot be suspended right? Oh well why are we calling you then huh? (Getting a little sassy) Oh really? What's next going to start swearing at me? *unleashes incoherent babble of rage and expletives* Yeah. This is a scam! Haha I had fun though.

I got a call today and hung up after the recording said my SS number was "being suspended." It's sad and depressing that brazen criminals can call me on my cell phone. I imagine, these kind of scams could be very effective with retirees who may , just happen to, be in recent communication with the SS office. Our NSA with their super-computers listens to everything spoken on the phones. How in the world can these criminals set up an operation like this and not immediately get caught.

I just got a call also. They left a robotic message to call back.. I get so many scam calls that I block but was intrigued since they left a message. Called ‭(678) 804-4252‬ out of Buford Georgia. The guy answered.. as soon as I heard his voice I knew what was up. He said he was officer John from Social Security Administration.. I said I don't think yal are calling for me and then he said my name and I said yes, then he proceeded to tell me my SS# was being used all over Texas and that my # was going to be suspended. I said with the way you sound how do I know its not you using my SS#. He said of you feel that way then you can hang up so I did just that. I do feel bad for the ones who get caught up in the scams but I don’t understand how so many do.. think people be wary of everything these days!! Its sad to say but you can’t trust anyone any more!!
