This is what a Social Security scam sounds like

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

Call from +1 (800) 898-2398. Social security card suspended because of suspicious activity. Press one. Thank you.

Just got a call and stupidly gave the last 4 of my social and my name so I hope nothing happens but they said I should have been arrested and they were suspending my ssn and also seizing all my credit cards and bank accounts were being seized.

Received a call from a Ventura, CA # 805-809-9703 saying there was suspicious activity and my SS# was being suspended and to press 1 to find out the details. I stupidly pressed 1 and the call hung up. I hope that didn't give them access to my phone or something. I turned it off....

I just got one of these scam calls from 866-931-7075.

"Fraudulent ssa activity at the southern Texas border"

1-800-168-2277 I just received a call from this number. I think it is a scam. It was a recorded message saying that my SSN had been suspended and to press one to find out more. I did and some one with a middle eastern sounding voice came on so I hung up. Is this a scam.

I recently got a phone call about my ss, I didnt answer it cause my phone has Name I'd, we need to get these numbers terminated and they need to stop calling us. Thank God for the robokiller app.

Robo call and same voice. Said the following: Social security reporting suspend by social security number due to suspicious activity. Oh number calling me was: 800-344-6101

The prerecorded call turned my cell phone on just b 4 noon PDT. The scam call was similar but non threatening. The robo call suggested that I call back & enter #1 to learn more about swapping my hacked SS# for a new set of # (card?). The voicemail was repeated. I called the # entered (844-959-5200) & the party was temporarily unavailable. I was going 2 ask if they could hear me. Most targeted people realize by now that its the last 4 digits of the SS card # needed to work the scam. The other 5 #'s are not that difficult for identity thieves to figure out.

Just received one of these scams about ss #in voicemail. I never answer phone from unknown numbers. It was from 805 731 0099.

I’ve received 8 calls today from this scam. As soon as I block a number it robocalls me from a different 800 number. So I called one of them back, a woman answered the phone “ social security off” and when I went off on her she played stupid and asked if I was looking for an apartment. The minute I said police she hung up.

Keep getting calls from 800-254-5826 saying there law enforcement and SSA also a voicemail from 646-593-8974 from the SSA

Just received a scam call from number 850-739-5973 telling me that my social security number has been suspended due to illegal activities. Please call us immediately so we can take action...and they repeated their phone number.

I just got voicemail to call immediately or i will be arrested 1-855-677-3458

I received a call on 7/18 2019 that said do to suspisious activity on your ssn we have suspended your ssn, very scary but I believe this to be a scam,i do not respond to these calls ,hope I,m not in trouble for this.

I got these calls 3 times and I thought it was a Chinese man but now i know it's an Indian man because the scammer said there is fraudulent activities and suspicious activities under my name and under my ssn# and asked for my full name and ssn# and maybe my address to confirm after he told me what is going on and I'm so glad I didnt know my social security number because I may have fallen for the trick and actually told him my ssn# When I hung up the voicemail sai I'm getting an arrest warrant issued under my name and ssn# and I was scared. Does anyone have any phone number I could call back to waste this scammers time? I'm so down to call back these scammers and expose them.

Just received call from 1-844-268-2199 saying that my SS had been suspended due to fraudulent activities...

They said:Been forced to suspend your social security number immediately Zach do this on your social benefits will be canceled until further clearance. In case you feel this is an error we may connect(?) with the Legal South of social security administration in order to connect to the Social Security Administration office.

Received this call 5:52 PM 7/18/2019 from 1(800)3176980

I just received a call from 7-706-986-0846. They said they had to suspend my social security number due to fraud activity. Just a heads up in case you are tracking volumes.

Just received a voicemail with similar (robo)message: "This is officer Ryan Smith calling you from the Department of Social Security Administration. The reason you have received this phone call is to inform you that there is a legal enforcement action filed on your social security number for criminal activities. When you get this message kindly call us as soon as possible on our number that is 424-281-0251. I repeat, 424-281-0251 before we begin legal proceedings. Thank you."

I just received the exact same call in California. My call was also said to be Officer Ryan! The number was 210-880-2585

Got 3 scam calls in the last week from these numbers
Same msg (..your SS benefits will be suspended blah blah) but with a female voice this time.
Don't react, just hang up.

Just got a scam call from: 1-800-204-0048 with automatic message of having SSN issues.

In the last six months, I have received over 240 calls from 240 different numbers. I don't answer numbers I don't know or that don't identify with an actual name. I then block the number. Just sitting here this morning, I have already had 3 calls. Ridiculous!!

I never answer calls from unknown numbers. The voicemail I received started out with, "The Department of Social Security ... " - - I was immediately suspicious since the proper name is Social Security Administration!

I also received a call this morning 7/19/19 at 8:41 Pacific. Same male robo voice as others are getting, same message and 'press 1'. Number was (844)628-1268.

Got an automated call similar to the one above saying there was suspicious activity with my SS# and to call immediately. I didn't.

I just received a SS call threatening to cancel my SS check. Ha.

‭+1 (800) 760-2803‬ I just received a call from this number saying my ssn has been suspended.

Voicemail message left.
Extremely time sensitive. The number for you to call the SSA back is 706-986-0846. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that there's a legal enforcement action filed on your social security number for fraudulent activity so before this matter goes to the state court house and before you get arrested if you need any information or have any question kindly call us back at 706-986-0846. Thank you."

I received this phone call a few minutes ago 866-836-9216 said I had to press 1 to fix my social security number because it has been suspended for suspicious activity and needed to press 1 to fix it..I was trying to record it and it just hung up by itself , I did not get to press 1

‭+1 (866) 321-2098‬ Just got a call from them too threatening me about my SSN being suspended since I didn’t call them back last week when they called. Good thing is I don’t answer calls from numbers I haven’t saved in my phone book. I let them go to the VM

I received a voicemail today 7/19/2019 stating my SSN has been suspended and to press "1" to get more information about the case. I will not call them back as this definitely sounds like a scan.

I received a similar phone call from 1-800-703-1417

Just received a call about 10 mins ago saying “your social security is temporally suspended and all your social benefits will be suspended until further notice. Please stay on the line while we connect you to a personal information specialist” I’m in Texas and the number I was called from was 1-800-554-8798. You are able to call the phone number back but it sounds just like the scam call they have as an example!

Just got a call from 262-205-4861( Wisconsin), He tried to get smart with me because I pulled his cards on the call because I knew it was a scam, which I said if this was on SSA they would call from Harrisburg, Pa not from Texas where he mentioned or Wisconsin where it popped up on my caller Id which also said Scam alert from At&t!! He started to stutter to say something and I said call again you'll be reported!! And hung up the phone!! Thats the second time in like 4mos.

I just got a scam call for my SSN from 800 557 0418

I have rceeived 4 calls from different 800 Numbers claiming to Suspend my SSN and allows a Option to press 1 and connect to someone incase I dont want my SSN to be suspended !!

Not sure what needs to be done

This number just called me left a number to call back saying that if I didn’t contact them I was going to have some serious consequences because my Social Security was being used and was in fraudulent this situation and this is the phone number they are fake I called them back and told them that I work for the Social Security Partman and they hung up on me they are so dumb ‭+1 (800) 566-9819‬ Watch out for this number

Got a call yesterday from 805 178 6787 saying my SSN was suspended.

I received three calls this morning, all robo calls. The first, according to my caller ID came from Vietnam? The next 2 an 844 number, all three same message. Social Security Administration, suspicious activity, suspending my card and to push 1. Seriously! With all our technology why can these calls be detected? My concern are for those receiving Social Security getting one of these calls could be devastating.
