Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Question, I keep receiving the same call from an auto machine about my social being suspended. It keeps asking me to press 1, if I press 1 do you actually speak to someone or does it hang up? I have seen both answers in the comments & I just want to stop the calls. I already blocked 4 different numbers & I still keep getting calls.

I am permanently disabled and depend on SSD to survive not to mention SSA is taking money out of my account already unlawfully, but I received the same type of call "your SS number is removed due to suspicious activity hit number 1 to learn of your case" of course I know better then to hit the 1 but went through calling SSA who had scam alert and to call OIG who did not give me a human to speak to. I have cancer, intractable pain and this type of behavior is federally a FELONY and FRAUD if this is so prevalent what are they doing and why does it continue. I have spam alert with my carrier and it was not picked up the number is 1 (888) 897 6123 and it is "BUSY" as all get out.

When is the FTC going to stop scammers from faking phone numbers? Wouldn't that be a great way to start? Fine the phone companies every time they allow someone to fake or rotate numbers.

Hi, Thanks for all the comments. We got two calls one from Officer Garcia, the other Officer Jacob Brown, saying your social security has been suspended due to illegal activities on your account. The number is 3472637688. It scared us really bad. This is horrible. Husband called back and their was a woman in background with what sounded like a loud chirping bird, her voice was real tinny sounding, said to leave name and number. No one called back so I got to checking here online and found this.

The very first time I got this call, I did get nervous because my son is autistic and he does receive SSDI so I press #1 to speak with someone, but when they asked me to confirm his Social Security number, that’s when the red flag went up so I immediately told him that I know they’re a scam, but I still called my local Social Security office who said they do not do that at all and if there was a problem with my sons disability benefits, I would get a registered letter in the mail to come into their local office and the only time they’d call me is if I call them first and press the option to have them call me back (as opposed to just waiting on the phone for the next available operator), but it’s only real when you ask them to call you back, but SSA will NEVER CALL YOU to discuss anything about Social Security and they NEVER SUSPEND an SS#, EVER !!
