Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I received a call from 800-933-2447. The call stated that my SS# had been compromised. The person on the other end gave me the name David Miller with Badget ID 105-962. I ask for my name to pull up my record, which I did not provide. The guy tried really hard to fake his accent but when I asked him to spell his name which he did but had trouble the letters I, V, L, and R. I asked him to repeat his name many times until he got tired and moved to asked for my info. After explaining that they should have my records because they called me, he decided to end the call. I have dealt with calls like this in the past. Please be careful with the information you share.

I have been called 5 times in the last hour from 5 different numbers. It sounds like somebody using one of those robotic voice changers saying they have suspended my account due to suspicious activity and to click 1 to continue. Anyone had any experience with this? Latest number was (895)617-7579. I never answer calls from numbers I don't recognize so this has all gone to voicemail.

Just received a phone call a minute ago on my answering machine saying my SS number has been suspended due to suspicious activities and asked me to press 1 to reply. I ignored it since it was obviously a scam. Social security number is not linked to any home phone number or cell phone number. Thanks to everyone who shared their experience!

In the past two days, I've received the social security scam call SEVEN times. Yesterday they called me every 15 minutes in over the course of two hours - with different numbers. I blocked each number. I didn't answer the phone, so every time they called the same robot voice message that was left in my voicemail said, "I'm calling to inform you that we just suspended your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press one thank you." The last time they called today at 10:14 a.m., I was in a meeting at work. We answered and put the phone on speaker then pressed one. It had a recorded message that said that they will transfer my call - I would describe the accent as female and British. Then it rang. A man answered and asked me for my name. A coworker said, "You called us. You should know my name." He said, “I don’t know your name. Please give me your name.” She repeated her comment. He asked for it again. I told him that he was on a conference call and that I have already reported them to the FTC. He said with a really snarky tone, “Oooooh, what are they going to do about it?” I said, “Stop calling me and remove my name from your list.” He said, “Nooo… what are you going to do about it anyway?” I said, “Stop calling me!” He said, "No!" Then, I hung up the phone. I asked my coworkers what they thought his accent sounded like and they mentioned it was a mix of British, Australian and maybe Indian. The phone calls have stopped, for now.

I missed a call and they left me a voice message. So I called the number back (knowing it was a scam), sounded like a foreigner. There are people who might think it was real. We as citizens need to help spread the word to elderly, and those who don't know that the SS is not going to call you with the ridiculous accusations. I gave him NO answers, he gave me the 800.772.1213, actual phone number of the Social Security Admin and that a Patrick Drake would answer the phone. It really makes me upset that these people are scamming those around us.
