This is what a Social Security scam sounds like

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at

I just listened to a message from last Friday from SSA saying my social security number was going 2 be suspended and I was going to be arrested. Why do people do those kinds of things, smh.

8/26/19 I got a call from 941-913-9943, they left a msg saying my social was out on hold and that i had a warrant for my arrest and needed to call back and speak to an officer... LOL

Glad I found this information, just received an automated voice call from (805) 285-5261 about my social number being reported as fraudulent and that I needed to call that number back.

I got a call saying that there are new drug and dental benefits through SSA. He asked if I had gotten my new card for this. I said no. He said he would have a new one sent, but needed my card number. I laughed and hung up.

you guys should add this number1-888-281-5253

Wednesday, August 28, 2019 - Just got a call from 714-267-5288 very similar to the example above

I used to work with the US Postal Service, and every month I observe this elderly gentleman struggling to make sure that everything is done right before mailing a letter. This one month, he looked distraught and extremely worried, so I've decided to approach him to try to assist him. He told me that he's struggling this month's payment to his social security benefits and it just keeps going up, and don't feel too good sending their last scrap of money that they desperately needed with his wife.

This got my attention, because eventhough I don't know anything about social security benefits, I know that they should be the one paying right? This elderly gentleman should be the one receiving a check from them, rather than sending them hundreds of dollars every month on USPS money order.

I told the gentleman not to send any money until we get to talk to my Postmaster, and see if this is a fraud. But the elderly gentleman refused, out of fear that his situation will get worse if he breaks from the routine. I guess the scammers has psychologically manipulated him to the point that he fears them always watching and ready to punish.

I was finally able to convince the gentleman to give me the letter so that I could show it to my Postmaster. When I showed the letter to my Postmaster, I guess it was such a common occurrence that there's a protocol in reporting these things up the chain. My Postmaster came out and talked to the gentleman, and that when I left them to get back to my duty station.

I didn't know what happened afterwards, but I did still saw the elderly gentleman coming to the post office and mailing things, but I noticed that he was trying to avoid our attention so I just left him alone.

Just got a call from 1-800-216-4299 saying my SS number will be suspended. If that is to be believed then there is ocean front property in the Mojave desert. Ha-Ha-Ha. I called that number and it is no longer in service. I have blocked that number, if they should call again. They really don't want me to talk to them, their ears and eyes will water and burn with the words I would use. They will end up blocking my calls. LOL!

Got another scam call from 1-800-400-8248 or 18004008284. Can’t these scammers be stopped already?!

Please don't ever fall for this people. NEVER send anyone money...EVER. Always a scam. Blocked the number and moving on with my life.

I just received a recorded message claiming to be SSA telling me that my SSI was being suspended due to suspicious activity involving my SS #. Press 1 to talk to a SSA representative. Don't think so. Here is the #
1 800 640 7611

I just received a call from 1(800)038-0739... This is getting ridiculous!

Received 2 calls today, recording gives the SS# message, but if you press 1 they respond, and want you to give info, if they suspect you know, they hang up. Telephone numbers were 1-800 370 8746 and 1-800 222 5293

Got a call from 866-426-0532 about SS card being suspended. I faked being scared and said I had just been at the office earlier in the week(this was true). The Indian told me not to be upset but what was my name and number. That was when I told him he was a scam and hung up!

Four calls today...supposedly from Alvin, Texas.

I've gotten several of those calls. The first one I talked to the "representative" After a very convincing line a little squiggle of doubt came to my mind. I told him I lived very near the local Social Security office so I was going to go by there and talk to them directly. HUNG UP ON ME. That told me it was a scam. I recommend the same tactic to others. Just tell them you are going to the source and watch their reaction.

Got the same spam call from 559-201-4164

On 08/29/2019 I received a scam call from 1-877-772-3468. The recorded voice is had a British accent.

I received a call from (840) 657-4450 today stating: This call is from the Department of Social Security Administration. The reason you have received this call from our department is to inform you that we just suspended your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity, so if you want to know more about this case just press one. Thank you.

I got a call today twice the first time I didn’t answer the 2nd time I did it was some guy with an accent named Alex he didn’t say his last name saying that my SSN had been suspended and that there was someone in Texas using my SSN for money laundering and trafficking said there were 2 addresses when I asked for them he didn’t seem to want to give me them specially when I asked him to repeat the addresses then he asked me what bank I had and said names of other banks told me to close my bank account and hung up. Got me really scared but idk it sounds like a scam from what I’ve read

Received call from (333)345-8635 stating I have issue with SS# and to press 1 to talk to a person.

I've had 3 scammers just today.

Easiest reply is say "you called me. You should already know who I am" they immediately hang up.... wasteful individuals. Two of people who answered all have Indian accents the other sounded like they were from the south east.

I received 2calls this week telling me my SS is suspended because of suspicious activity. Same voice, same words. How can they get away with that? Why can't they get arrested? Their number is 1 866 457 9654 and it shows 800 Service on my caller ID

Received call from 800-681-7178. Female generated voice, but the message you listed.

just got one from 863-209-8818. called back several times and they kept answering . Asked for DOB and SSN which I wouldn'r give, threatened to arrest me.
