This is what a Social Security scam sounds like

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at

I was a recent victim and I had no idea this was going on, my some sense I realized during the call something was wrong as said my name only and with 2 second the caller said yes I have your file in front of me right now, after just a name.
But I was lucky and said when ask for the last 4 numbers of my social I decided to say this is very weird I will call my local SSA office.
But now I cannot believe this is still an active problem that many people are unaware of , and something should be done adverts on media to let people know , local news , I had no idea and I now know how lucky I was I feel for every victim out there.

I just received the same thing, but with a female voice from: 1-844-983-9255.

I just received a call from 888 226-4919 saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity.....and to press 1.

I used my judgement, and figured SSA would contact me by mail not call.

5163622252 call from new york, new phone number scam

Call from these two numbers with a similar message 800-545-3205 and 800-786-7684

Received a call from 279-777-0004 with a recorded message stating the call was coming from a social security agent, that there is suspicious activity involving my social security number and that I should call the number back to deal with the problem.

Just got a call from 917-423-1354. I did not answer but a called back from my job phone. A gentleman answered saying that I had just called the social security administration. I told him that he was a scammer and that government agencies do not make phone calls. He had a profanity laced fit... and he promised to scam my entire family. What a clown?

I got a same kind of message today from

here is another number they call from 800-479-0275

Their message was" security administration in order to connect with the social security administration officer press one now in case we do not hear from you, your social will be blocked permanently to connect with officer now press one and you will be automatically be connect with a concerned department. We did not recieve any in_____ citizen in order to speak with Social Security personal regarding your social security press one and this automated system will connect you with the officials..." Grammar is bad, computer generated message. I can see how it would scare someone, especially seniors. Why aren't these robo calls stopped?

Just got call from 410-769-9527. Didn’t answer as usual and when checked message it was a little different from the one about suspending my social security number. They said the SSA is filing lawsuit against me and arrest warrant is being issued. When call number back it says it’s disconnected. I know it’s a scam but they still freak me out!

I just received an automated call with a female voice advising there has been suspicious activity with my social security card and to call back at the same number (407-674-2625) rather than hold for someone or press a # to speak to someone. My new SS card was stolen December 2018 from my mailbox so I was curious.
I called 407-674-2625 (Orlando FL #) and the guy who answered said 'Social security office' and asked what I was calling about. He clearly had a foreign accent and there was 1 other guy in the background very loudly on the phone saying it must be my co-worker that was calling you. I said the automated voice said there was suspicious activity with my SS card. He then asked my name, then quickly said who is "X" saying my maiden name. I said it's very loud where you work and he disconnected the call.

Obviously if someone from SS was to call, they wouldn't sound like they are sitting in a call room with 1 other person. Be aware of these people!

2 numbers I received calls from are 1-800-560-2889 and 1-800-347-2475, stating they are the law enforcement and my SS account has been suspended, press 1 to talk to whoever.....

Same story as rest, voicemail stating attempt to reach you to resolve this issue etc... I called back and middle eastern man I asked to identify himself said his name (I forgot what it was, most likely fake anyway, and from social security) and asked me for name and email but it felt off to me so I hung up and googled the phone number and no connection with social security came up, actually nothing came up on the number so I wanted to make sure to leave it for others to find

I just received a call from 844-413-5323 stating they were suspending my SS Benefits due to suspicious activity and to press 1 to speak to someone. When I did, it forwarded me to what sounded like a room full of people, but they ended the call. Thank you for these posts.

Got a call from 912-785-2755. Officer DeMorris. Gave me a case number and his badge number and everything!

I received a female voice when i answered the phone, stating my SSN has been breeched and the account will be suspended. It seemed to be a recording. The call back number was 631-481-2393. I didn't call back. I immediately looked it up on the computer, and came to this site. I've received a multitude of these type of scans. The first one almost fooled me about IRS tax evasion. I've never evaded taxes but they were pretty convincing until the case agent got irate and used foul language because i asked too many questions and wasted his time. I figured it out mid call by looking up the caller ID phone number on the computer realizing it was a scam, then just messed with him till he gave up and hung up completely frustrated.

Getting this call multiple times a week now.
