This is what a Social Security scam sounds like

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

I received a call from 832-800-4166 and it was the same message. It went to voicemail and I read the transcript of that voicemail. Do not fall for this please

A call form 972-430-5206 is also a scam.

Watch out for Social Security Scammer calling from 800-247-2044. They are trying to say your account will frozen and closed completely if you do not contact them at the 800 #.

I got this call almost every day and several times a day ...

Just received the latest of too many of these calls. This was a female auto-voicemail from 772-800-0714, which is Port St. Lucie, FL, saying that there's been fraudulent activity using my SS#, and I should call that #. They didn't address me (or anyone else who lives here) by name, which almost all official calls do, and it would seem that most gov't #'s would be toll free (800,888,etc.), but they switched the 800-772 part of the real number...pretty easy to see it's not real.

add 248-657-4366 to the list. Left a voicemail saying my SSN is frozen and to call back for information on my arrest warrant LOL

Just received this voicemail:
We are trying to reach you for the last time to verify about such activities. Just in case we will not hear back from you it will be consider as an intentional fraud and the lawsuit will be filed under your name. In order to get more information and talk to the social security office or kindly press one to repeat press one to connect your call to social security officer. Thank you.

I just received a same voice call. It makes me nervous

So what is the government doing about this to protect us and what is the punishment for the offenders?

"this is to inform you that there is a legal enforcement actions filed on your social security number for criminal activities so when you get this message, kindly call as soon as possible on our number that is 347-491-4182"

I just got one of these calls. They're quite unnerving. Thank you for getting the word out.

Had one of these calls in my voicemail when we got home this morning. I didn't call them back since I have received these type of calls before. I deleted the voicemail. The number they were using was 1-800-571-8103.

I am getting a womens recorded voice of use of my SS and to call them at 1-888-921-2342 in Oregon when I block them or other calls like this they just use another no.

I got the automated call, and they threatened to put out a warrant for my arrest - that's when I definitely knew it was a scam. That never happens, plus social security does not call you - they write to you. Same with the IRS.

Scam - 1-800-079-8134, said my SS# will be suspended if i don't press 1 and speak with an agent.

got a call from 281-204-2140. i called back from a landline and they knew my name! Scary. told them i was from a law firm and asked what they wanted. a gentleman with an indian accent was on the phone. I told him i was reporting him and he asked me what i was waiting for... christmas!

Just received a automated call from mans voice that they detected fraudulent activity and that my SS would be suspended and for me to press 1 which I did not...and then the call hung up from Hackensack NJ 201-441-6952. Hope these scammers get caught.

My mum recently got a call from a 1800-479-9745 and the voicemail viewer said it was an agent from SSA and she had been involved in a crime due to a suspicious activity related to the social number so she had to call them back and provide them with information to be able to help her in this case.

I reckoned it was a scam but wasn't totally sure about that, I decided to take a look into that and it appears to be a thing going on for years but it's popped up again recently. She went to a friend in the family, he's a police officer and said the same thing, it's a scam and it's been around for quite some time but it came up recently again.
So be careful people!

Just got one of these from 800-376-8254.

Just got a call on 10/17/19 from 1-800-691-5361 using this scam and hung up. I then blocked their # since this is the second time they tried this scam. First time was a couple of months ago from a different # and they called 4x in one day before I finally blocked them.

Received call from this number +15120778212 saying SSN is getting suspended due to suspicious activity.

Why can't these people be stopped? If they have a phone number, why can't the authorities figure out who they are? They must be paying someone to use that number. I don't understand why they can keep doing things like this over and over. Are our laws not stringent enough?

Just received a phone call stating SSA and there is suspicious activity on , something about fraud and they have filed charges against me, etc etc. press 1 to be connected to , etc. Pressed one and all I heard was bad noise feedback.
The call was from 800-121-5656 .

A huge spate of automated calls from the +1 516- area code. Some claim to be from Peru +51 6.. which seems like a bug in their robot caller.

Got a call from (205) 341-9284 saying that he was with the SSN Administration and he wanted me to "verify" my Name, SSN and Birthday.

Someone called from 888 722 5206 indicating we will be put in jail if we don’t provide our SIN number and call them back. Thanks to the investigative expose on CBC, I don’t think we’ll be going to jail anytime soon....LOL

807 197 5108 - same scam

I am also getting the same type of call at my work phone number. The caller states he is from the Social Security Administration and that my social security number is being fraudulently used across the country and legal action is being taken against me and that my SS# will be permanently closed. Social Security Adm. does not do this. The number is 773-654-5333. Please look into this. Thank you!

they've been calling my fathers cell, who has just recently passed. The numbers are...409-204-4598, Hitchcock, TX and 469-373-7433, Ferris, TX. Beware of these scammers, that's the last thing you want to do is compromise your SSN.

Same same
Sounded like a female robot

I received a call 10 minutes ago 1-800-662-8649. The message was similar, but it asked to wait and speak to a police officer. I never answered and the line hung up.
