Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Just received the latest of too many of these calls. This was a female auto-voicemail from 772-800-0714, which is Port St. Lucie, FL, saying that there's been fraudulent activity using my SS#, and I should call that #. They didn't address me (or anyone else who lives here) by name, which almost all official calls do, and it would seem that most gov't #'s would be toll free (800,888,etc.), but they switched the 800-772 part of the real number...pretty easy to see it's not real.

I got the automated call, and they threatened to put out a warrant for my arrest - that's when I definitely knew it was a scam. That never happens, plus social security does not call you - they write to you. Same with the IRS.

My mum recently got a call from a 1800-479-9745 and the voicemail viewer said it was an agent from SSA and she had been involved in a crime due to a suspicious activity related to the social number so she had to call them back and provide them with information to be able to help her in this case. I reckoned it was a scam but wasn't totally sure about that, I decided to take a look into that and it appears to be a thing going on for years but it's popped up again recently. She went to a friend in the family, he's a police officer and said the same thing, it's a scam and it's been around for quite some time but it came up recently again. So be careful people!

Why can't these people be stopped? If they have a phone number, why can't the authorities figure out who they are? They must be paying someone to use that number. I don't understand why they can keep doing things like this over and over. Are our laws not stringent enough?

I received a call from +1 800 952 4552 telling me that they from a fedral agency and they've found some suspicious criminal activites regarding my SSN, such as money laundering, drug trafficking and car jacking. He's name was 'Pieter Brown' federal officer. He asked for the last four digits of my SSN, my address, about my Bank card, how much cards I have and the amount of money I have on it. He then schedule for two Federal officers to come to my home tomorrow morning '10/19/2019' to help me with my SSN after it's suspended or frozen. I'm not 100% sure if that was a scam or not. Help.
