Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

Got a voice mail yesterday from 888-110-4241. Male robo caller stating that this was the Department of Social Security and had suspended my SSN due to "suspicious activity". It continued to tell me to press 1 for....and then they realized it was recording, not a person, and hung up. I found this page and I'm passing the word along on social media, as well as here.

This happened today! Phone numbers they called from: 410-844-0936 MD 202-239-6760 DC 512-714-8223 TX 315-994-9901 NY 808-800-0545 HI All calls were from the same person once I got wise about the scam and hung up. They called 33 times from these numbers and left 1 vm. Neither men were American. I was on the phone for almost 2 hours. They claimed my ss and ID were stolen and connected to a crime that happened in Texas. They said my ss will be suspended and I need to empty my bank accounts before my accounts are frozen and to put my money on Target gift cards and a US Marshal and Police Officer will issue me a new ss, scan the cards and put the money back in my account. Thank goodness I spoke to someone before doing this. He pulled up the FTC website and read me what scammers are doing and it was exactly what was happening to me. I'm still shook up.

I just received a call- voice recorded message from 469-208-0200 stating that there is an issue with my social and I need to call back immediately or they would be filing a lawsuit or something against me. It was hard to understand because the voice recorded message was broken English. I used my landline at work to return the call. They answered "Social Security Administration" when I called, but they didn't know who I was because of the number they called was different from the number I call them back. They asked for my name and I said "First, who am I speaking to"? and she hung up. The fact that they answered social security administration is fraud.... Something needs to be done.

Three months ago I began receiving phone calls from a local number with the title; " El Pollo Gordo". The phone call was addressed to my mother, whom I take care of. A message was left each time saying they were going to suspend her benefits if she did not return the call asap. (I was usually working when I received the call.) I called the number they left on my voicemail and it was directed to the state office of SSI. The following month my mother's social security benefits were suspended. I took an early day and drove my mother to the local social security office where I was informed that they had indeed suspended her benefits and why. I asked about the name that came up, and the clerk at the window told me it was indeed coming up as "El Pollo Gordo", but they were trying to fix it. So in the mean time, her benefits did get suspended and later reinstated after a few months, phone calls and home visits. I understand that they were trying to fix the problem, but with all the identity theft and scams going on out there it's hard to decipher who is who. Being that my mother lives on a fixed income, it's important to know who is actually calling.
