Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

Just received a call from a private number robocall saying my SSN has been compromised. The voicemail also stated there is an arrest warrant under my name and I must call back immediately. Robocall repeatedly asked that I press "1" to verify it was my phone number. Not sure that courts/police notify individuals via telephone of an arrest warrant. Shame on these individuals!

I started getting messages from an 800 number that claim to be the Social Security Administration fraud detection agency. Saying that there was a warrant for my arrest and never gave my name. One time I did catch them and was able to get a live operator. When I started to say I know you're a fraud they hung up on me. So then a number from Fresno area code then Texas I meant they were coming back to back. With the scene message it starts as there is a warrant for your arrest from the Social Security fraud division. The one I tried to call them back they say this number does not receive inbound calls or it is not set up to be answered.

I work for a large corporation and we constantly get calls regarding the SS# being used in Texas and to contact officer Barnes. Most times we all here just hang up but they call back within the hour. It's a nuisance. One time I did the prompts to speak to officer Barnes and got a foreign male voice. I said you're calling a corporation and they hung up on me. Funny thing is they call back again within an hour. So stupid!

Got two separate calls yesterday, one from Texas (IRS scam) and one from California (SSA scam). Called them both back this morning. No one would answer in TX, so I left a voice mail letting them know I was turning the number over to the FBI for investigation for wire fraud and violations of the RICO statute. Haven't heard back from them. Called the CA number, got a man in a very noisy call center ("Investigation Department") who sounded Indian. Told him they were in violation of Title 18 of the US Code for wire fraud and the RICO statute and that I had already contacted the FBI. As soon as I said "FBI", he hung up!

I get a weird robot voice recorded call weekly from a scammer saying they're the SSA and my social security number has been suspended due to suspicious activity. All they want is for you to give them your social security number because they don't know it. Plus, some more personal info like full name, date of birth, etc. What's sad is some people fall for this scam.

Received two voicemails stating my social security number would be suspended? Due to illegal activity .The caller said his name was Robert DeMarco ( he had an accent either Indian or West Indies) gave a "badge number" SSA17143. He wanted my name, address and last four numbers of my social security number. When I questioned his authenticity he said I should call a criminal lawyer to help me. He went on to share that there were three rented apts in Texas and rented cars in my name. I asked that he send me something in the mail. He said they had, but it was returned to their office. I did not give him the info he wanted and hung up.

I just got a voicemail from an unknown caller #311-434-5377. It's either a China or Mexico phone number. The recording said something like this: This is a call from Social Security Administration legal department. The reason of this message is to inform you that the SSA department is filing a lawsuit against you and the arrest warrant has been released on your name due to the legal enforcement actions by your social security number for fraudulent activities. To get more information about this case file from federal database, press 1 and speak to our officer now. I repeat, press one to resolve your case now." This is ridiculous. This is why I only answer calls from phone numbers I actually know. The rest go to voicemail.
