Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

For the past several months I have received multiple voicemail messages reporting “suspicious activity with my social security card in New Mexico. Please press 1 to be transferred to an agent”. I don’t recall them mentioning what agency they worked for, not that it really mattered. I haven’t made any attempts to contact them and have no intention to do so in the future. I would think if it was actually true, I would be hearing a lot more from them, getting written documentation and possibly a visit from our friendly neighborhood government agents. Unfortunately I no longer have the phone number(s) to pass on. I am curious though if anyone else has received a call like this taking place specifically in New Mexico.

I received a message from these guys, called them back twice. The first time I asked them about the message they hung up. I called them back, and I got cussed out and told some ugly things about my mom before they hung up again. Then they blocked my number. These people are immature and disgusting.

So today my phone rings and the recorded message says they found my ssn to be suspicious of illegal activities or so and to call back that same number immediately. The number had a local area 410 (and it read Jarretsville, MD). First I ignored the call and it went to voicemail, then the second time I answered and I heard the same recorded message as the first one they left on my voicemail. They went on to call me third time which I didn't answer. I wonder if there's any way I can check if my ssn was compromised somewhere?

I've gotten about a dozen calls like this over the past three days, all from different 800 numbers. I haven't answered any of them but have the same 42 second voice message with the usual threat that the SSA will permanently block my SSN. Super disruptive. I've had to silence my phone, but then I miss actual calls and texts.

We DID file for wife's SS benefits on-line and two later received a phone call from a SS agent. He did not ask for SSN but last four digits. He did ask for my date of birth and full name etc. You can imagine our distrust. Turns out to be real! We received official docs with NEW INFO from that phone call (like change of address and couple phone numbers to contact us not done on line but on the phone) Still very unsure now how this goes. He knew our bank account but never asked to give him the numbers. He never asked for money. So. Now we are wondering how SS admin states this. BTW: his number is registered with the SS call bank and can be dialed direct.

I just started getting a lot of SS scam calls that start with a 310 area code and a 502 prefix. I'm very surprised that I can't easily make a report about scam calls pretending to be the SSA. The FTC website seems ridiculously complicated and vague. What is the outcome of making a report? Will I get a response from anyone? Do these scammers ever get stopped?
