Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

Received a call from 877-513-3284. Robotic voice with an "Officers" name and saying it was the legal department of social security administration and that there was legal enforcement action filed on my SS number and to contact them (with a "case number") and to ignore it would be considered an intentional attempt to avoid initial appearance before the magistrate judge.

My family keeps getting a call from 1-888-644-3169. They call and inform there is legal proceedings against me but no real information is provided. They also informed they are calling because wage garnishment is pending but my employer has not responded. Mostly robo calls but if you wait long enough a person answers and they are usually very aggressive if you ask questions.

I received a call an hour ago saying due to fraud activity with my SS# and a warrant was issued for my arrest. I was told to press one to talk with a rep and to provide the last 4 of my social security number. I hung up. A couple days ago my husband had a voice mail from "Amazon" saying over 600 dollars were charged to our account and to please call to confirm the purchase. After talking with Amazon I laughed at that one. Amazon has my number as a contact number not my husbands. I did set it up with the real Amazon that if any purchases are made on my account i will be notified

Two calls from "Officer Amanda Barnes" this morning. Very specific as to location of the "theft of my Social Security number." Don't press anything. Don't respond. Report locally to media and local government so they can decide if a SCAM alert should be publicized - again. (This occurred on a land line).

Add (219) 380-8217 to the list of fraud numbers. Northwest Indiana area. Same old scam story. Active case against me, fraudulent behavior, seeking to "Verify" information. I really like the one that said i was about to be arrested and the police are on their way if I didn't send what I owed in taxes immediately. Never EVER give your information out. When in doubt, hang up and call you institutions back from dialing the number yourself.

Here's the number of the most recent scammer call I got. It's blocked when I call back, but it had ALL the telltale marks of a scammer, aggro demands, no info, hung up on me when I asked for their employee ID number 218-334-8917 says its coming from Frazee Minnesota, but the dude who answered had a thick, almost unintelligible accent, sounded like he was from India or something
