Getting calls from the SSA?

Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

From Miami, FL: 305-503-6113
Claim your SSN will be suspended.

I got a call yesterday from SSA saying my # has been link with 17 bank accounts, 4 Apartments, 4 car loans and 2 car rentals and that I could get a new SS# if I just give them my #. The name the person gave me was Det. Alan Johnson #7031-07 and the # he called from is 305-503-6113 and they will answer SSA. I played the game with them from the beginning knowing it was a scam. I was bored and needed something to do. Told them that I knew this was a scam and that I wanted to play along. He got upset with me and hung up on me, not very nice of him.
Call the phone # and give them hell.
3 0 5 - 5 0 3 - 6 1 1 3 ALAN JOHNSON

I've received 3 scam calls in the last 2 days from an "Officer Amanda Barnes" w/ the SSA. Each call has come from a 202 area code- which I've discovered is a Maryland area code- and has been a robotic sounding recording using poor English speaking skills. It states that my SS# has been used in "fraudulent activities in south of Texas". My name is never mentioned or any other personal info, so it's quite obvious it's a scam. Not sure where/who to report these to, but below are the three phone that #s :
(202) 769-6976
(202) 749-0683
Thank you, & I hope no one falls victim to this nonsense!

833-879-1981 called today. 3 weeks ago I reported a complaint on a different number, as well. Is the FTC really compiling these complaints and will take action? I don't even answer my phone for people who aren't listed in my contacts.

I received a call from 844-450-4565. She asked my name and social security number and I gave my name but did not give SSN number and told her I am not supposed to give my SSN over the phone and she told there are a lot of suspicious activities going on your SSN. I told her I've not received any mail from SSA then she hanged up.

i've been getting calls consistently since yesterday, I block one number and the a call from another number. All the number start of with (510) 112 then the last four digits are different each time. I haven't answered but i keep getting the message about suspending my ss card and it's getting extremely annoying.

I also received 15 calls yesterday (6/20/19) from the 510-112 - (various) numbers. As soon as you block one number, they call from another.

Have had 7 calls from different 1510-112 numbers today alone. Stating SSA account has been suspended. Obviously a scam.

I called 4 times today and its always the same 1st six numbers which is 512-112 and then the last 4 numbers are always different. But its always the same robo call saying they suspended my ssn and press 1 for more info. I push them to voice mail cause I dont want to answer it.

I have had 10 calls today, and each time I block them on my cell phone, they change the last couple of numbers, and try again, and I block that one. How can I stop this. Is there anyway?

Received today at 12:41 pm PDT from 800-524-3720 , the following recorded message from, allegedly : "Department of Social Security Administration " stating my Social Security Number has been suspended since there has been some suspicious activity. I have received 11 voice mail calls regarding my Social Security number has been compromised from 10am to 4pm. All are code area code phone numbers 510-112 with six different last four number!!!!!!!

Got a call from Officer Victor Frank with the SSA from 602-529-3467. He said my ss# is being used fraudulently in a money laundering and drug smuggling operation. Wanted to know if I rented a Toyota Corolla in El Paso recently. He said they found the car with traces of cocaine in it and it was rented in my name. He asked me all kinds of personal information, which I made up as I went along. He said I was in big trouble and transferred me to Officer Mike Shawn with the DEA! Both of these men had very heavy Middle Eastern or Indian accents. When I wouldn't give him the correct ss# to match the made up name and dob I Gabe him, he started yelling at me that I was going to be arrested any minute and would go to jail for a very long time. 2 hours later I got another call from the same #, different officers, different crimes, same thing all over again. He ended up hanging up on me because my information was wrong. They're no fun, so I blocked the #.

Thanks for the heads up bspen. I received a similar voice mail today by a robotic message from an "Officer Victor Frank" from the Dept of Social Security Administration calling from 919-214-9751 informing there is a legal enforcement action filed on my social security number for fraudulent activities.

Same thing happened too me but with an (865) area code, almost verbatim with the scam except I panicked and ended up sending them money like an idiot because I thought it was serious and didn't notice that the scam ssa# was not the same # as the ssa for my local city

I got that exact same call from 619-369-0754. Same toyota corolla with drugs in it and he even threw money laundering in the mix

I received a call from 1-888-724-9548 that threatened law suits would be filed against me for fraudulence that I supposedly committed. Very odd.

Call after call from (347) 878-7231 claiming to be SSA? the number is out of New York, BRONX or QUEENS. I have driven them crazy all day long, now they will not answer my calls. The number is generated through googlevoice, try to report that!!!! A JOKE!!!

Texas number being used saying they are part of the Social Security Administration I have repeatedly called back and not one person is from the US. Once they realize that I cannot possibly be old enough to have or be on Social Security they hang up the phone. But they have called from that number and a couple of others for the last few weeks

Numbers that are calling me

I received a phone call from 888 362-5481 alleging they were SSA with threatening conversation

New number claiming to social security administration:

Just in the last few days 1(877) numbers having been calling me about 4 or 5 times a day.

Was just called twice by 877-516-9540 stating "Your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity press one to find out about this investigation" I just hung up and blocked this caller. Though they called again under a different number this time I answered so my iPhone did not record the number under 'recent' calls. It makes me wonder how they are getting my number, I have been house hunting on the web recently so is the only way they retrieved my number.

They've called me 9 times today. All different numbers starting with 877 area code. I block every number but they keep calling. How do you stop it?

I got two calls today from 877-405-0286 saying they were from the Social Security administration and they suspended my SS#, and if I wanted to know the facts of the cats, I should call them back.

I got a call saying they were from social security but they didn't ask for my info. They knew my address and some info about me. They just wanted to Know how much my rent was.

Should I be worried? Is this the real deal or a scammer?

I just received a call today saying that my social security got suspended from the following number 707 702 1239. The person claimed to be an officer with a badge number of 3156219 by the name Richard Harper.

I've received 2 calls - first one was 6/21/19 @ 6:08 PM (voicemail)..saying "we have to suspend your Social Security number due to suspicious activity. If you want more information press 1. " Then again on 6/26/19 @ 6:12 p.m. (voicemail) "we had to suspend your Social Security number due to suspicious activity. If you want more information press 1."
These calls came into my landline number 540-221-4354.
I knew right away it had to be a scam. Please look into because they're brazen using different numbers. Thank you.

1-800-609-7282 SSA scam number. I called the number. This area code is Washington State. They said I had a bank account in a bank in Roland Texas suspected of being drug money. They had my address in NY. They threaten to have me arrested. From the sounds of his voice he sounded very foreign. I explain I will call my local SSA and US Marshals locally . He kept saying I will connect you and then hung up. When I called back the number was dis-connected. With many businesses having security breaches I am putting more security for identity theft. We need to catch these people doing this.

I have gotten calls from this number from Minneapolis Minnesota
617-517-3985 and the person name was Anthony Morris his badge number was 95317 they gave me a CF#2017419 saying that not social security has been used in Houston Texas and El Paso Texas which places I have never been that and did I was laundering money and dealing drugs and they found my social security at empty house with drugs and stuff like that and the guy that was talking to me was acting like he was talkin to some authority help me for a hole for 2 minutes which is not time to probably get my information which I did give I think my social security which was really wrong so I just want everybody to be alert with this and I was like I don't know what to do and it's really scary for a lot of us older people or disability people especially when they talk about the Marshall and the Federal Investigation Bureau so beware

I have been receiving calls from 1-800-021-9213 telling me that if I do not call them back my social security number is going to be permanently deleted from their records.

I get the same automated message at least 3 times a day from different numbers, some from Washington DC, some from USA, some with no location ID. I block the number every time, but they find me another way! It's frustrating, but I'll keep doing it.

Received this robo message today:
"Hi calling you from the legal department of social security administration. Purpose of this call is regarding an enforcement action which has been executed by the US treasury against your name ignoring this would be intentional attempt to avoid an actual(?) appearance before the magistrate judge or example Jury for a federal criminal offense so before this matter goes to the Federal claims court house or you got arrested. Kindly call us back on our number 906-748-9221. I repeat it's 906-748-9221."
