Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

I got the same message saying a warrant has been issued for my arrest for fraudulent activity from my social security number and to press 1 to speak to an agent about this matter. But since I've done nothing fraudulent I felt it was a scam but I did look this up. I'm so.glad I'm not alone and i did not talk to anyone.

I received the similar voicemail from an "unknown caller" (blocked number) from a robotic voice. They do not leave a number. Instead, press "1" to 'find out about this case. states: This call is form the the Department of Social Security Administration the reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your social security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case press 1 thank you."

I got a call didn't know the number so I let it go to voicemail. When I checked it the man said that he was from the SSA (no name) said that there was a bench warrant out for my arrest for suspicious activities with my SSN. Then he called back about 10 minutes later and said he was going to send the sheriff's to my home. I was like I wish you would. I don't have any bench warrants out there and have yet to be arrested. DON'T FALL FOR THE SCAM!!

Please note that Social Security and anyplace else you want to call to check on or report these calls are NOT open on the weekends. I got a voice mail today (Saturday), purportedly from Soc Sec, requesting a call back regarding my benefits application. I do have an application pending. I called back, providing my address, birth date, and an amount from my last SSI statement. They didn't ask for bank info or my SocSec number. I also received an email stating that they'd tried to call, again saying it was from Social Security. My point is, there's no way for me to check on this until business hours on Monday. So do their employees call applicants for ANY reason on the weekends?

I received a call from "unknown" today. Robocall that says social security number was compromised...exactly as above. I hung up. I'm on the 'do not call' list for several years. I filed a complaint with the FTC. Hope the govt can stop the harassment from these robocalls and scammers.

I have been receiving 4 calls a day with a recording that my Social Security number was being shut down due to fraud. When the person came on the line (accent sounded from India) he asked how he could help me and I said take me off your phone list. Still calling me today...I called my local SSA office and they prompted me to report. Being over 65, I am receiving at least 10 obvious fraudulent calls a week from various scammers. Now I don't answer my phone unless it is a familiar number. FCC may be doing something but that millions of people are losing millions of dollars per year - should make this a crisis topic in the news and warning should be sent out by SSA and other organizations in every type of media including the postal mail and emails. So sad that elderly and other more vulnerable people are being targeted, but it is epidemic in the proportion of our population being hurt and impacts us all.

I had a call awhile ago and telling me that my ssn is currently involved in a fraud and I have to report it to the federal. The number who called up was 833 426 2025. Then I told I don’t know anything you are talking about and I told them, I’m gonna report this the the police. After then few minutes +1(1)1 911 called saying that there is a complaint from the ssa that my social security is been involved in fraudulent transaction big time crimes. And they will issue non-bailable warrant of arrest. I told them just forward it to our local police. Why would a 911 call us where this number is being used for emergency calls, stupid idiots scammers. They are very well equipped now with fake phone numbers.

Why is nothing being done to try and stop this? Most of these criminals don't even bother to hide their phone numbers anymore. They ask you to call them back. I get about three calls a month from someone claiming to be from the SSA. This must happen millions of times a day, yet nothing is being done to stop it? That's just sad.

I received a call on 6.21.2019 at 11:30 am from 321.282.1487 that my ssa account was comprised for fraudulent activities and legal enforcement action was going to be taken if I did not call this number back. I did NOT return the call, but am frustrated I could not speak to a live person at ss to discuss this situation. It appears it is happening too much for them to respond? How do we get a handle on this so we can stop these crooks? I would love to head up a group with IT support to derail these activities especially for older people who put their trust in authority!

I received a call today from an automated source (blocked number) saying my SSN had been suspended due to suspicious activity and to press 1 for more information. Upon pressing 1 I was connected to someone who sounded Indian who preceded to tell me some more garbage about how I was flagged. I explained to him he didn't sound like he was working out of a faculty designed for multiple people to be calling from an office full of cubicles. To which he assured me he was working with other social security officer and not out of a home. I gave him the run around for a couple of minutes and finally told him it wasnt the policy of the social security office to call people like this to which he told me "go to hell" and hung up. FYI

I started receiving fake SSN calls after applying for unemployment benefits in WA state. 5 of them yesterday - all from 1-866-XXX-XXXX numbers. Today I'm on my 4th call and it's not even 2 in the afternoon. I go rushing to my phone every time in case it's a call for an interview and every time it's this dumb robo call! How do we stop it? They use a different number every time, so it doesn't seem to be doing any good to "block caller." Is there some other way to get these calls to stop? I agree with previous comments - I didn't get these calls until I made contact with the government for benefits. Suspicious...

I received 20 calls yesterday every 15-30 min while at work from various 866#’s. I finally answered to tell them to please stop calling me and to remove my number. Apparently, my SSN has been suspended due to fraudulent activity as I have 25 bank accounts that have a total of $10MM in them for various illegal trafficking and money laundering. They wanted to know how many accounts I actually have so that they don’t put a freeze on them. I asked for the bank account information that has the $10MM so I can hurry up and go make a withdrawal.
