Getting calls from the SSA?

Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

I got a call didn't know the number so I let it go to voicemail. When I checked it the man said that he was from the SSA (no name) said that there was a bench warrant out for my arrest for suspicious activities with my SSN. Then he called back about 10 minutes later and said he was going to send the sheriff's to my home. I was like I wish you would. I don't have any bench warrants out there and have yet to be arrested. DON'T FALL FOR THE SCAM!!

Please note that Social Security and anyplace else you want to call to check on or report these calls are NOT open on the weekends. I got a voice mail today (Saturday), purportedly from Soc Sec, requesting a call back regarding my benefits application. I do have an application pending. I called back, providing my address, birth date, and an amount from my last SSI statement. They didn't ask for bank info or my SocSec number. I also received an email stating that they'd tried to call, again saying it was from Social Security. My point is, there's no way for me to check on this until business hours on Monday. So do their employees call applicants for ANY reason on the weekends?

510-112-7903 called me four times between 9AM PST to 11AM PST.
I picked up the fourth time, and it was a Robocall from "the Social Security Administration" that said my SSN was suspended due to suspicious activity.

I also received 2 calls one on June 28 from # 315-232-6384 from Adams, TX and another today July 1 from 817-402-1147 from Texas, also Threatening. I have never had this calls before and just started, it can be scary, I am glad I check this page..Hopefully the authorities will do something about this calls, I'm now going to change my number just to be on the safe side.

I received a call from "unknown" today. Robocall that says social security number was compromised...exactly as above. I hung up. I'm on the 'do not call' list for several years. I filed a complaint with the FTC. Hope the govt can stop the harassment from these robocalls and scammers.

I have been receiving 4 calls a day with a recording that my Social Security number was being shut down due to fraud. When the person came on the line (accent sounded from India) he asked how he could help me and I said take me off your phone list. Still calling me today...I called my local SSA office and they prompted me to report. Being over 65, I am receiving at least 10 obvious fraudulent calls a week from various scammers. Now I don't answer my phone unless it is a familiar number. FCC may be doing something but that millions of people are losing millions of dollars per year - should make this a crisis topic in the news and warning should be sent out by SSA and other organizations in every type of media including the postal mail and emails. So sad that elderly and other more vulnerable people are being targeted, but it is epidemic in the proportion of our population being hurt and impacts us all.

I had a call awhile ago and telling me that my ssn is currently involved in a fraud and I have to report it to the federal. The number who called up was 833 426 2025. Then I told I don’t know anything you are talking about and I told them, I’m gonna report this the the police. After then few minutes +1(1)1 911 called saying that there is a complaint from the ssa that my social security is been involved in fraudulent transaction big time crimes. And they will issue non-bailable warrant of arrest. I told them just forward it to our local police.
Why would a 911 call us where this number is being used for emergency calls, stupid idiots scammers.
They are very well equipped now with fake phone numbers.

SSA scam with phone no. 423-315-6757.

Why is nothing being done to try and stop this? Most of these criminals don't even bother to hide their phone numbers anymore. They ask you to call them back.

I get about three calls a month from someone claiming to be from the SSA. This must happen millions of times a day, yet nothing is being done to stop it? That's just sad.

Just got one of those calls. Is this the era of scam

got the scam call 2 days ago,did not fall for it. Government agencies don't call you

Got a call on my cell phone from a California number, 1-415-236-7304. Received a partial message that said something like Social Security Administration is filing a lawsuit against me and an arrest warrant has been released on my name due to legal enforcement action by my Social Security number for fraudulent activities, to speak with the officer press 1.

Same voicemail was left on my voicemail from a phone number (573) 542-8208

Got a call from (408)633-9242 saying a warrant was issued for my arrest for fraud with the SSA.

I received a call on 6.21.2019 at 11:30 am from 321.282.1487 that my ssa account was comprised for fraudulent activities and legal enforcement action was going to be taken if I did not call this number back. I did NOT return the call, but am frustrated I could not speak to a live person at ss to discuss this situation. It appears it is happening too much for them to respond? How do we get a handle on this so we can stop these crooks? I would love to head up a group with IT support to derail these activities especially for older people who put their trust in authority!

I've received (6) calls and voice mails from 817-402-1246 (the "SSA") with this same message. They are blowing up my phone. When I answered a call, "Officer Emily Green" wanted my name and SSN to verify my identity....not! I asked her to take me off their call list and she hung up on me!

I am getting a call today every FIVE minutes ! I block the number they just call back from another number. How do I STOP these??

+11888707738 called me and told me that my social security number has been shut off and that I needed to call them. I did not return the call I just copied the number and forwarded to you I woke.

I just recieved a call from San Francisco Cal 415-753-1374 tellling me they have issued an arrest warrant and that im guilty of fraud to press 1 if i want to speak to the officer then hung up on me i called the ssa back and im waiting for a return call but they didnt ask for any of my information at all.

Received a robot call from 866-814-3559 and 800- 325-0775 that left a message saying "This call is from the Department of Social Security Administration. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activities, so if you want to now about this case just press 1, thank you....

Tonite I received another call from 8669317075 saying they cancelled my Soc. Security # due to suspicious activity. I did not answer nor did I call them. I just plugged the number in and found out it is a scam.

Receiving calls from 510 112 7901 regarding cancellation of SSN. Receiving calls daily, one day, received calls every hour

I just got a hang up from an unknown number saying to be from the SSA and there has been some suspicious activity with my SS, the man told me that I would get another call later today because my first language isn’t English and I can’t speak it very well. I’m unsure on what to do...
Sorry, I just declined a call from an unknown number. Please help me I have no idea in what to do.

I got a call from 800 067 9225, the person had an Indian accent and said my Social Security was suspended. It sounded like a SPAM

Call I got was from Cambodia

Received call today from (206) 452-5948. Totally bogus and insulting.

Hello,
Today I started receiving calls from 9 digits numbers that claim to be the SSA locking my social security numbe because is suspected activity. These are definitely fraudulent and it disturbs me that o have received 5 calls in less than two hours from slightly different numbers, all leaving the same voicemail. Here are the numbers:

‭(844) 432-354‬

‭(844) 476-949‬

‭(844) 476-145‬

‭1 (844) 455-770‬

I just received a phone call from a Steel House #310-773-4725 and they said my ss # had been hacked and to call that number. I am in central Florida.

Few minutes ago I got a call from phone 818-394 6580 , asking me to call back because detected fraud w/my SS
My answer was: Oh, thanks God, you will give me a SS number!! because I don't have one. Immediately they hung up the phone and I blocked the number

I received a call today from an automated source (blocked number) saying my SSN had been suspended due to suspicious activity and to press 1 for more information. Upon pressing 1 I was connected to someone who sounded Indian who preceded to tell me some more garbage about how I was flagged. I explained to him he didn't sound like he was working out of a faculty designed for multiple people to be calling from an office full of cubicles. To which he assured me he was working with other social security officer and not out of a home. I gave him the run around for a couple of minutes and finally told him it wasnt the policy of the social security office to call people like this to which he told me "go to hell" and hung up. FYI

I never answer my phone unless I know who is calling. I just received a message from the SSA, using the number 1-865-806-588? Scam central!

I have gotten these fake calls 5 times a day for the last 3 days and it looks like no end in site. Each one from a different 800 number.

Got a call on my cell phone from a California number, 1-415-455-5641. Received a partial message that said something like Social Security Administration is filing a lawsuit against me and an arrest warrant has been released on my name due to legal enforcement action by my Social Security number for fraudulent activities, to speak with the officer press 1.

Just got a call from 646-583-1820 saying that my SSN has been canceled due to fraudulent activity . Has anyone else been getting these calls?

They left a voice mail and its a robot voice.

I’ve gotten at least 10 calls in the last three hours, all from different 866 numbers. The automated message is the same, your social security number has been suspended blah blah blah. When are they going to figure out I’m not stupid and leave me alone!

I have been getting these SS fraud calls since May of this year. Today we are up to 9 calls with voicemail attached to each one, and it's not even noon yet. Someone needs to stop this!

I started receiving fake SSN calls after applying for unemployment benefits in WA state. 5 of them yesterday - all from 1-866-XXX-XXXX numbers. Today I'm on my 4th call and it's not even 2 in the afternoon. I go rushing to my phone every time in case it's a call for an interview and every time it's this dumb robo call! How do we stop it? They use a different number every time, so it doesn't seem to be doing any good to "block caller." Is there some other way to get these calls to stop? I agree with previous comments - I didn't get these calls until I made contact with the government for benefits. Suspicious...

Phone number used today was 646-583-1828. Caller ID said from New York. I didn’t answer, and an automated voicemail message said... This message is from the Dept of Social Security. My SSN has been suspended due to some suspicious activity, and to Press 1 if I want to know more about this case. Of course, I didn’t and that number is now blocked.

Getting calls every 15 min from various 866 numbers. They leave VM with the same recording every time about SS account being 'suspended due to suspicious activity.' This is straight up HARASSMENT. Wish I could take legal action.

I’ve received 2 scam phone calls. First one threatened to jail me if I didn’t call back. I reported it to my bank.
Second one claimed to be Social Security Agents that had to destroy my social security number.
The second ones phone number was 646-583-8920
Tried to report the second one but got lost in the process.
How, who and where do I report these vile scams?

I got two of these this morning saying my ss# had been hacked. There was suspicious acitivity. I don’t answer them but they actually have the audacity to leave a voicemail!! Can’t the FTC stop these?

Four calls regarding suspicious activity and suspension of social security number because of fraudulent activity from 202 area code.

The supposed social security department called me today telling me that my number/ card had been suspended, due to suspicious activity

I received 20 calls yesterday every 15-30 min while at work from various 866#’s. I finally answered to tell them to please stop calling me and to remove my number. Apparently, my SSN has been suspended due to fraudulent activity as I have 25 bank accounts that have a total of $10MM in them for various illegal trafficking and money laundering. They wanted to know how many accounts I actually have so that they don’t put a freeze on them. I asked for the bank account information that has the $10MM so I can hurry up and go make a withdrawal.

Got a call from New York (646) 583-2319 and stated “Phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press one thank you this call is from the Department of Social Security administration the reason you have __________________ call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press one thank you…”

Robocalls...Enough!! And as Americans , we are overwhelmed with these calls ! And now , calls telling us our social security number has many suspicious activities !! Came from 1-817-402-1664, 7/15/2019 @ 11:30 am . And the FTC.gov site is not easy to navigate to even report this .

I received a similar call from the famed Amanda Barnes saying that my SSN was used in South Texas. The call didn't state my name or any other details and asked to press 1 to speak to an officer. The number I got the call was from 800 279 5554

Hey.
You know Amanda?
She called me today. Same story about my SSN and South Texas.
I hung up on her

Received the "Officer Amanda Barnes" call today claiming suspicious activity in Texas.
The number was 800-998-6465.
Ironically, searching that number leads to a fax number at U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE — BUREAU OF CONSULAR AFFAIRS - UNITED KINGDOM.

Got a call today and several others before. Today was from 2538736048 saying that the SSA was filing a suit against me and an arrest warrant was issued for me due to the numerous offenses on my social security number. And to resolve this issue press 9 to speak with the representative. Uuuh yeah sure. I'm sure you'll fix it all. So dumb. Stop wasting our time.
