It’s a staggering number. More than 42 million Americans owe a total of nearly $1.5 trillion in student loan debt. It’s no wonder people look for help. But not all help is legit. Scammers are targeting borrowers with student loan debt relief schemes that can actually make things worse.

In a new case announced today, the FTC alleges the operators of Mission Hills Federal and Federal Direct Group bilked borrowers out of more than $23 million. The FTC says these companies lured people with false promises to pay down student loans and lower monthly payments. According to the FTC, the companies also lied about taking over the servicing of the loans, which tricked people into submitting loan payments directly to them. In fact, the defendants diverted borrower payments to themselves.

What’s more, many of these borrowers went months, sometimes years, before learning their student loans weren’t being repaid. Why? The FTC says the defendants made people give their federal student aid IDs, or other personal information, to enroll in the debt relief program. They used that information to change borrowers’ contact information on U.S. Department of Education websites, which limited the borrowers’ contact with their federal loan servicers.

If you or someone you know feels overwhelmed by student loan debt, know this: There’s nothing a company can do for you that you can’t do yourself for free. If you have federal student loans, start with StudentAid.gov/repay. If you have private loans, talk with your loan servicer. For more information, check out ftc.gov/StudentLoans.

Here are a few tips to help avoid debt relief scams.

I got the same call from "Greg". Left the same exact message twice so I know it was a recording. I called anyway, and the girl with an attitude tried to get me to give her the code to change my password- she had it sent to me as a text from the FSA website. That's when I told her I'd call back. I'm supposed to trust someone with my password? Yeah.. How are they still in business? 877-880-4128

Received a similar call on 2/17/2020 from a person who identified as Greg Braydon (sp?) calling from 973-241-7887 asking me to call the 877 number you referenced in your note. I did not call back. I assume it’s some type of student loan scam and the individuals involved are attempting to commit federal wire fraud.

Received three calls from three different numbers to the central processing center for student loan debt. Yet when I call the only way you can talk to someone is to say you have debt. This has happened three times in two months someone needs to shut them down.

“Megan” from “student loan advisory board” left me another message today (Feb 17, 2020. ) “Great news you’ve been prequalified for student loan forgiveness program” and it’s “imperative” I speak with her before this amazing offer expires. She can be reached at 866-211-2238 according to her recorded message (although the number on my caller ID is 725-209-2806.) So much for being shut down.

Just got a call and voicemail from Student Loan Advisory Board today. Megan at (714) 769-6980. Said I was prequalified for student loan forgiveness and I need to call back to get this going before these programs change... newsflash you can't get forgiveness until you've paid for 10-25 most times. If you want help with your student loan debt, remember: you don't need to pay someone for help.  You can do everything a company can do, and you can help yourself for free.

If you have federal student loans, start with StudentAid.gov/repay.

My daughter just found out that she has been being scammed for Federal Loan payments for the past 4 years. The company was first called SLA, but has since changed to Fresh Start / Start Fresh (it seems to vary). To whom should this be reported? The bank suggested the police. Is there any way to get any of this money back besides what the bank is refunding me for some more recent payments. Also the student loan has been increasing greatly in interest, because very little was paid over this period. Any way to get some of that interest removed in light of this scam?

You can report this to the FTC at www.FTC.gov/Complaint. The information you give goes into a secure database that the FTC and other law enforcement agencies use for investigations.

Get information about federal student loans at www.StudentAid.gov. There's information about different repayment options and what to do if your loan payments are overdue.

I used Mission Hills Federal to pay for my Education and they scam me for thousands of dollars. Which I thought they were paying them back which they were pocket into their accounts. How I am on a budget I am 64 years and helping me daughter and her three kids. And I am still paying for my Education. This is really wrong people taking other people money for their own. Get a really job. Thanks Mission Hills Federal

They have NOT completely shut these people down. TWICE today, within two hours, I got TWO calls from this number: (866) 597-2660 and I called them back. Be aware and watch out for this number, or other numbers with this same area code.

I called this number, 855-873-5677, "Lawrence" answered saying they did not have my student loan information. He asked what i owed, i responded less than $800. He said "you should have not been contacted", and immediately a recording comes on telling me I had been removed from their call list, and would not receive any more calls. Okie dokie, fine with me! People, if they dont "have your information".... DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR INFORMATION! If they cant give you THEIR information (company name, location, address) so you can verify it with the dept of education, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR INFORMATION!
