We know there’s been a flood of information and updates about the government’s economic impact payments, or so-called stimulus checks, lately. But quickly and safely moving massive amounts of money into the hands of those who need it is a big job with a lot of moving parts.

We also know that the more you know about the process, the less likely you’re going to be tripped up by calls, text messages, or emails from scammers trying to steal your money or personal information.

Here’s what you need to know about the stimulus payments and how to avoid scams related to these payments.

Who will get money?

Adult U.S. residents that meet established income limits are eligible to receive money from the government. This includes:

Taxpayers – people who filed a federal tax return for 2018 or 2019.

Retirees – people who get Social Security, Railroad, or other retirement benefits.

Beneficiaries – people who get public benefits like SSDI, disability, or veterans’ benefits.

Non-filers – people who do not have to file a federal tax return, including people who made no income or made less than $12,200 (or $24,400 for married couples).

If you get Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, have a qualifying child, and didn’t file a return in 2018 or 2019, you have to take action by noon ET on Wednesday, April 22 to add the $500 per eligible child to your payment. See details from the IRS.

What to do

Most people don’t have to do anything to get their money because the IRS will use the same payment method – direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or paper check – used to send you your tax refund, Social Security, retirement, or other government benefits money. If the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit information, you can go to the “Get My Payment” feature at irs.gov/coronavirus and let them know where to send your direct deposit.

If you don’t usually file a tax return, go to irs.gov/coronavirus to access the “Non-filer” portal and to figure out what, if anything, you have to do to claim your money.

To check on the status of your payment, you can now use the “Get My Payment” feature at irs.gov/coronavirus.

Avoiding Coronavirus stimulus payment scams

Scammers are using these stimulus payments to try to rip people off. They might try to get you to pay a fee to get your stimulus payment. Or they might try to convince you to give them your Social Security number, bank account, or government benefits debit card account number.

4 tips for avoiding a Coronavirus stimulus payment scam

  1. Only use irs.gov/coronavirus to submit information to the IRS – and never in response to a call, text, or email.
  2. The IRS won’t contact you by phone, email, text message, or social media with information about your stimulus payment, or to ask you for your Social Security number, bank account, or government benefits debit card account number. Anyone who does is a scammer phishing for your information.
  3. You don’t have to pay to get your stimulus money.
  4. The IRS won’t tell you to deposit your stimulus check then send them money back because they paid you more than they owed you. That’s a fake check scam.

Trying to use the IRS site it identified me and took me to the next step. After few trials it does not recognize my SS# anymore and I can't fill in the bank info. It claims not to have a match and clears my SS, logging to my IRS account all the info is there.

I got a letter last week from the "Whitehouse" in an IRS envelope telling me I would get my stimulus check through "direct deposit". However, today I received a paper check in the mail for the $1200 in an IRS envelope. I have heard on the news that the checks have Trump's signature on them. There is no signature on this check. How do I know if this is a scam or not? It all looks so official. Should I wait for direct deposit or take the chance and deposit this check into my account?

I also am getting the error message that the info does not match. Th other issue is the routing number that needs to be put in for direct deposit. My bank has two. The one for direct deposit which is the one they say to use, and one for wire transfer. The number for direct deposit gets an error message that it is not a valid routing number. Its the one social security uses for my check. I verified it . SOOO ...Lots of glitches in the system.

My tax return was just rejected because someone used my son's SS# to file for the stimulus check. It got deposited in a bank account none of us recognize. Now we're not sure what to do. Why would it be so easy for someone to use his SS#? Did they need other information?

Report the identity theft at www.IdentityTheft.gov. You can create an FTC Identity Theft Report and an IRS Identity Theft Affidavit. As you go through the reporting steps, you will get a plan for what to do next. This FTC article tells more about child identity theft.

We got our stimulus payment via direct deposit a couple of weeks ago, and yet today we also got a paper check. Is this really our money, is it a mistake, or is it a "non-sufficient funds" scam to get banking info?

I have tried (unsuccessfully) to add direct deposit info several times recently. Message states that AGI and Refund data I enter doesn't match IRS records. Question: If, for example, original AGI was 42612.57, what number should be entered?

For the past week, I have been entering my owed amount from 2018 based on the IRS transcript information along with my AIG. Every documented figure is rejected; although all of the figures come directly from my IRS account information. I have been receiving the same message; "the information does not match their records". How can this be if the information I am submitting is coming from them? This is very frustrating not being able to speak with a live representative to help clear up issues with those that owe. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

All "Get My Payment" tells me is that the information entered does not match our records. I entered the info right off of my tax form. I tried upper case, lower case, with dashes without dashes and anything else I could think of. I filed my 2019 return already and my wife has not received hers either. I can't call as no one is manning the phones at the IRS. And there is no way to contact ANYBODY, ANYWHERE regarding the discrepancy. There must be some way to contact somebody who knows what's going on but I'll be damned if I can figure it out. I can wait, if I know what's going on, but this is just irritating.

I draw SS but still file taxes. For past years I have had to pay IRS. When I entered this information and the amounts directly from my 2018 tax return, it says they can’t give me info as I have either assessed Get My Payment site more than once in 24 hour period which I have not or info entered doesn’t match IRS records.

You can report both thefts at www.IdentityTheft.gov. That's the federal government website for reporting tax identity theft to the IRS. You can also create a recovery plan and get forms and letters to manage other problems caused by the theft.

IdentityTheft.gov will ask you questions so it can complete an IRS Identity Theft Affidavit (IRS Form 14039) for you. The system will send the form electronically to the IRS. You can include a personal statement too, to tell the IRS details about how your identity was misused to claim your tax refund and your economic impact payment.

You also can save a copy of the Affidavit to your computer. Based on how you answer the questions, IdentityTheft.gov will create a checklist that shows what else you could do to protect yourself from further identity theft.
