We know there’s been a flood of information and updates about the government’s economic impact payments, or so-called stimulus checks, lately. But quickly and safely moving massive amounts of money into the hands of those who need it is a big job with a lot of moving parts.

We also know that the more you know about the process, the less likely you’re going to be tripped up by calls, text messages, or emails from scammers trying to steal your money or personal information.

Here’s what you need to know about the stimulus payments and how to avoid scams related to these payments.

Who will get money?

Adult U.S. residents that meet established income limits are eligible to receive money from the government. This includes:

Taxpayers – people who filed a federal tax return for 2018 or 2019.

Retirees – people who get Social Security, Railroad, or other retirement benefits.

Beneficiaries – people who get public benefits like SSDI, disability, or veterans’ benefits.

Non-filers – people who do not have to file a federal tax return, including people who made no income or made less than $12,200 (or $24,400 for married couples).

If you get Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, have a qualifying child, and didn’t file a return in 2018 or 2019, you have to take action by noon ET on Wednesday, April 22 to add the $500 per eligible child to your payment. See details from the IRS.

What to do

Most people don’t have to do anything to get their money because the IRS will use the same payment method – direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or paper check – used to send you your tax refund, Social Security, retirement, or other government benefits money. If the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit information, you can go to the “Get My Payment” feature at irs.gov/coronavirus and let them know where to send your direct deposit.

If you don’t usually file a tax return, go to irs.gov/coronavirus to access the “Non-filer” portal and to figure out what, if anything, you have to do to claim your money.

To check on the status of your payment, you can now use the “Get My Payment” feature at irs.gov/coronavirus.

Avoiding Coronavirus stimulus payment scams

Scammers are using these stimulus payments to try to rip people off. They might try to get you to pay a fee to get your stimulus payment. Or they might try to convince you to give them your Social Security number, bank account, or government benefits debit card account number.

4 tips for avoiding a Coronavirus stimulus payment scam

  1. Only use irs.gov/coronavirus to submit information to the IRS – and never in response to a call, text, or email.
  2. The IRS won’t contact you by phone, email, text message, or social media with information about your stimulus payment, or to ask you for your Social Security number, bank account, or government benefits debit card account number. Anyone who does is a scammer phishing for your information.
  3. You don’t have to pay to get your stimulus money.
  4. The IRS won’t tell you to deposit your stimulus check then send them money back because they paid you more than they owed you. That’s a fake check scam.

I have filed my 2018 & 2019 taxes through Turbo Tax. in the beginning articles were saying people who filed through Turbo Tax would receive their money sooner than what was expected. My mother, who also filed through Turbo Tax, received her direct deposit the first week. Later, so did my sister. My information & banking info are the same. I have been waiting for direct deposit & if not, my check in the mail. It was said that checks hit in May & it’s the middle of May already. I use the IRS website to track my check but it only tells me, “payment not available.”

Get my payment is not showing me a date yet for the updated bank account. Thanks.

The IRS stimulus tool shows the payment was scheduled for deposit on April 29, 2020. The last 4 digits of the account number are correct, however, no deposit by IRS has been made. I live in a disaster recovery zone and increases in rent, utilities, medical (shall I go on?) eats up over 75% of my disability income. I worked for 35 years before becoming disabled. The federal poverty level needs serious adjusting. In the meantime, still gratefully waiting.

If my stepdad took my Mother's half portion of the stimulus money against her permission since they have been separated for three years now, she is also disabled due to a massive stroke. She doesn't file taxes and I want to know can he get away with this. He told my mother he gave her portion to his gf that he committed adultery with three years ago that broke up their marriage. I'm seeking legal help first thing Monday to prevent this from happening again.

If someone mis-used your information to claim your stimulus payment, that is identity theft.

You can report a stolen payment and create an IRS identity theft affidavit at www.IdentityTheft.gov. Click "Get Started" on the first page. On the next page, click on the green bar that says " someone claimed an economic stimulus payment using my information." You can help someon fill out the information.

Fill in what you know to create an identity theft report and IRS Identity Theft Affidavit. The system will create a list of steps for what you can do next.

Report identity theft at www.IdentityTheft.gov. That's a federal government website where you report to the IRS and FTC at the same time.

IdentityTheft.gov will ask you questions so it can fill out an IRS Identity Theft Affidavit (IRS Form 14039). The system will submit the Affidavit directly to the IRS. You can include a personal statement to give the IRS details about how your child's identity was misused to claim the economic impact payment.

You can save a copy of your completed Affidavit to your computer. IdentityTheft.gov will create a checklist of steps you can take to help protect your child from further identity theft. This FTC article has more about child identity theft.

I mailed in my tax information for 2019 via certified mail, because someone fraudulently claimed me. Now can't you verify my status via the SAWS .. I did everything on my part but keep getting rejected.. i don't normally file as my source of income is child support.. Its been well over a month no letter yet from irs. Some kind of clue of something would be nice other than being told I'm not qualified. Whelp yes I am when someone fraudulently claims me...

I'm concern because I have not yet received my stimulus check and I filed taxes, this year and last year same account number nothing has changed with my banking information the same for years. When I first checked the irs website it indicated they were missing information and wanted to know did I file my taxes this year and how much and indicated they need my acct information to deposit. I gave that and now on the irs website it states I'm eligible and once they have payment date it will post on website and get deposited in my acct with my last 4 numbers of my acct number. I have not recieved my stimulus check yet and I'm out of work with 3 kids.

That debit card might have your stimulus payment on it. Read this new blog.

The blog says people should Look for the prepaid card (and its envelope) in the mail. The envelope will be from “Money Network Cardholder Service.” Inside will be a VISA-branded prepaid card issued by MetaBank. This card will give you access to your economic impact payment.

I’ve reported my stimulus check stolen to the IRS and FTC. May 16. I was suppose to get it May 1 by mail. It was stolen from my mailbox. I received the White House letter but never my check. The IRS has my bank info, don’t know why it was never deposited. Till this day I have no check and no steps or answers on what to do about my stimulus check. Where to call or will I get a letter with what steps to follow?

I am in the same boat. The IRS has my banking information from previous filing 2 years ago, yet they took it upon themselves to mail the check on April 24th, which I have never received. I have contacted the Post Office to see if they can help me locate my check, but I have yet to receive a response. I am in limbo and the bills are just piling up! The IRS need to open a customer service hotline to resolve all these issues! They are giving us the silent treatment in the midst of a huge crisis.
