If you used MoneyGram to send money to a scammer between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2017, you may get a prefilled claim form in the mail soon. The claim forms, from claims administrator Gilardi & Co. LLC, are the first step in distributing money from the $125 million settlement with the FTC in 2018. In that case, the FTC and US Department of Justice (DOJ) charged that MoneyGram failed to meet agreements to crack down on consumer fraud involving money transfers.

You must return the claim form within 90 days

from the date on the form to be eligible for a refund.

These prefilled claim forms show eligible dollar loss amounts that are based on fraud reports people filed with MoneyGram and law enforcement. If you get a form and agree with the dollar loss amount shown:

  • sign and date the form
  • fill out the information the form asks for
  • mail it back in the return envelope that came with the letter

If you get a form but don’t agree with the dollar loss amount shown:

  • sign and date the form
  • fill out the information the form asks for
  • mail it back with copies of documents that back up the amount you claim. You can send copies of MoneyGram receipts, “send” forms, or transaction history reports with a listed eight-digit money transfer control number (MTCN). You can request a transaction history report on the MoneyGram website.

The claim form requires you to give your Social Security number (SSN). That’s because the federal Treasury Offset Program must find out whether you owe money to the US government before you can get a payment. It needs your SSN to do that.

You don’t have to pay to file your claim. You don’t need a lawyer to file a claim. Don’t pay anyone who contacts you and says they’ll help you file, or help you get your money back.

On June 1, 2021, people who didn’t get a prefilled form can start filing claims online at moneygramremission.com. When you file a claim online, you have to give a MoneyGram MTCN. Or, you will be able to print the claim form and mail it in with copies of MoneyGram receipts, “send” forms, and transaction history reports. If you plan to file in June, you can start to collect — and make copies of — your receipts and other paperwork now. Once that process opens, the deadline to file a claim is August 31, 2021.

For more information about eligibility, the claims process, and other topics, go to ftc.gov/moneygram and moneygramremission.com.

My claim form states "must pay the remaining $55 million by May 8, 2021". Calls to Gilardi & Co LLC just brings you to a recorded line. What is the status of this claim, due to be paid by May 8

This is a blessing, however a credit union and a bank did large transfers . Seems like I used walmart to walmart through Ria for other large transfers. Do you think that Walmart or Ria will be doing this also? I lost over $64,000

I have made two in-person attempts and have spent hours on the phone with Moneygram trying to pay their fee to obtain a transaction history. Odd that my 94 year old father was always able to send his money to scammers via Moneygram but the estate can’t pay them for info to support a claim.

I submitted my claim form online which included my old mailing address in one state during early April, 2021. But I currently move to another state during July, 2021 and my current mailing address has changed. Would you be able to update your records accordingly in order for me to receive the future payment in accurate manner which should be delivered to my updated address ?

I sent money with money gram to a scammer in 2019, I'm not american citizen, but my scammer , who was arrested, is american. Should I be elegible for the refund? Or moneygram remission will extend the period of the scam recepiets as westerunion remission did?

I read most Comments and Responses. Many have asked how to 'talk' to someone & how long before anyone gets a Settlement Refund. When calling 844-269-2630, enter '19#' & I believe that the option is '9' or '9#' to speak to a live agent! For perspective, Gilardi handled at least one Western Union Class Action. In my case, Settlement took just over 3 years. I am not complaining. I am simply stating that it will likely take a while before any $ is dispersed !

I am on "crunch time" trying to gather receipts & when I contacted Moneygram International they want me to pay them money for a history report. (??) I never had to pay for the Western Union Remission. Is this legitimate for them to ask? I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you TT

If you need a history report to include with the claim for a refund you file at moneygramremission.com, please say:

  • You are a victim of consumer fraud,
  • You need history a report for MoneyGram International remission, and
  • Request a waiver of the history fee.

This response would have been helpful to me when I asked the same question months ago. I gave up on filing a claim for my late father’s estate because of the inability of Moneygram to process the fee payment. Thanks for nothing FTC staff and Gilardi.

In response to your response…I will not be filing a claim because I can’t get a transaction history from MoneyGram. Even if I had said transaction history I would not trust Gilardi and DOJ to approve a payment to my late father’s estate. This observation is based upon my experience with the Western Union Remission fiasco. Again, thanks for nothing.

You can get the most up-to-date about refunds on the MoneyGram Remission Website. The frequently asked questions on the website answer your question:

11. When will I get a payment?

It will take up to one year or more to review and verify petitions, and determine who is eligible to receive a payment.  Check www.moneygramremission.com for updates on the status of the process.

I got a form in February of 2021. I have my claim ID I filed by mail and online as they suggested. But I have heard nothing since then. What is going on? I could use the money right now this are hard times. How much longer do I have to wait? My money was already figured up and I agreed to it. So why can't I get it? And why don't they keep us informed ?
