FTC to abusive debt collectors: You’re outta business!

Imagine getting a phone message like this:

This is the Civil Investigations Unit. We are contacting you in regards to a complaint being filed against you, pursuant to claim and affidavit number D00D-2932, where you have been named a respondent in a court action and must appear… Please forward this information to your attorney in that the order to show cause contains a restraining order. You or your attorney will have 24 to 48 hours to oppose this matter… Call 757-555-1234.

That’s an example of the type of calls Pinnacle Payment Services, LLC, made in an attempt to pressure people into paying phantom debts — debts they didn’t owe. In its October 2013 complaint, the FTC alleged that Pinnacle used an assortment of fictitious business names that implied an affiliation with a law firm or a law enforcement agency. Pinnacle threatened many consumers by telling them their bank accounts would be closed, their wages garnished, that they’d face felony fraud charges, or would be arrested if they failed to pay the supposed debts.

The FTC said enough is enough, and a judge agreed. Pinnacle and its principals are now permanently banned from the debt collection industry. That means they can’t help anyone else engage in debt collection, or sell, offer for sale, promote or market any information related to debt collection. The court order also imposes a judgment of more than $9 million, which represents the total consumer injury caused by their illegal practices.

If you get a call about a debt that doesn’t ring true, report it to the FTC. Your complaints help us stop rip-off artists, scammers, and fraudsters. The FTC’s aggressive law enforcement efforts put the bad guys out of business, and our vigorous consumer education campaigns empower people just like you to make well-informed buying decisions and recognize frauds and scams.

I have filed complaints with you regarding abusive actions regarding pay day loans. It is great you are acting on this and hopefully, the company I reported will have the same action.

Does the FTC go after lawyers who target widows and children
into fraud trusts?

You can file a consumer complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at www.ftc.gov/complaint. If a trend is detected there could be an investigation.

i keep geting calls saying that the irs is sueing me and that therea warrants for my arrest

Its absolutely amazing how citizens are protected by the FTC and the work they're doing in this regard!Keep it up!

Good to know! I was one of those victims that was contacted by that company and I am glad the FTC put them out of business!!!!

great enjoy reading all comments.

It gives me hope to know that you are working to help us get more access to our credit. It is very hard to constantly have to pay for your credit report when you have a fixed income. People with money can pay and should not have these problems but, people like me, on a fixed income, how can I afford to pay for these reports? They should be free so I can see and make the necessary corrections.

You can get a copy of your credit report — for free — every few months by visiting AnnualCreditReport.com or calling 1-877-322-8228. Federal law entitles you to a free copy every 12 months from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You also might want to review our article about how to dispute errors on your credit report.

I can say with all honesty, I have not received any monies of any kind. as I am of limited income, i'm not gonna bite these things in the butt.. I've got more sense than tha.t.. my mama did not raise a fool, so if anybody tells that again, its a lie.

I'm so glad I get this information,I will make a complaint if someone DOSE call me,

Good to hear FTC actively goes after these dirt bag.

Anderson law group does the same approach

I have recently had the issue with scamers claiming to be from Anderson and associates is this what your talking about?

I just received a call yesterday from a California number claiming they were sending a process server out. Even the caller ID show it came from Court Processing. The guy asked me when I would be home yesterday so they could send someone out. I waited for the guy but nobody showed. My accounts are paid perfectly so I couldn't wait to see someone show up at my door.

I received numerous calls today from a CA number about outstanding warrants claiming they were from the US Treasury, Department of Legal Affairs and would be serving me with papers for arrest. I have reported it to the NCDOJ and the FTC; also added my number to the National Do Not Call Registry. When I called back and told them I knew it was a scam, they quickly hung up.

I sure like this if it includes the collection agency that has been harassing me. I am a basket case worrying about this. I have never been this broke or scared in my life.

I am not sure if I have been scammed. Debt Solution Services (844) 745-7023. They initially never provided documentation to me, but they did have my name, phone number, and past debt that I still owe to Canyon Creek LLC. I paid them in June. I recently received another call from another company Tier One Asset Management stating that I owed Canyon Creek LLC. I had only the one loan. They told me other place was a scam. I contacted DSS, and they seemed unprofessional, and there is a lot of negative feedback for them.

I also received a phone call from DSS at this 844 number today. They called 4 of my family members using scare tactics. I don't have any debt owed to the people they claimed and I checked my credit report after I got off the phone with them. I see they have a website and will do more investigation on them.

I keep getting calls for my ex-husband of 25 years and have repeatedly told them to stop calling, I have no information or contact with him. This time a William Bailey called and I again demanded they remove our phone number for like the third time.

hang this people causing people to get sick just thinking about it.

The 2007 financial disaster did us in. Maxed out credit cards which we eventually could not pay. My question I was informed excessive phone calls are considered harassment. One very popular chain called constantly even on Sunday. Sometimes as early as 7:30 AM as late as 10PM. One day it was 9 times. Took me to court, judge released claim. The next year I received notice of new court date. .Called them with case #. Tried to tell them the case was released and I didn't think it could be tried again. I was told exactly they can do what they want. I went to court. My # was called I walked out the within a couple minutes. I would call that excessive. Lost wages from work my time and gas. I probably could have counter sued but what I was told the amount of payouts wouldn't have covered an attorney. That is why they get away with it. Even worse trying to work through foreclosure. Thank you for helping us.

Dear Abused Consumer: An attorney would possibly take your case pro bono and win Money for you and
him in this case, besides there is a statute that limits collecting a debt after so many years. Most states after four years. Ask an attorney.

i have received phone calls saying i have partaken in fraudulent activity concerning a pay day loan. they went on to tell me if i didn't pay them 900.00 dollars i would be taken to court and punished by law.. they told me they were an attorney's office. i asked how i owed 900.00 and their answer was interest and other fees. they said i needed to pay 500.00 to make this go away because i told them i didn't have 900. dollars, when i replied i was on a fixed income living off of 733 dollars a month, they replied ill call the loan establishment and see if they can lower it. i counted as she put me on hold. i got to 3 seconds and she replied they will do 2 payments of 250. or 100. a month until its paid off. My last name is H , they had me as Janet P L , a marriage from 1992 that lasted 3 years. they keep calling and threatening me, they have tried to send certified letters. its non stop, i have experienced terrible anxiety and don't sleep for days i called the BBB and they said it was a collection agency, another lie, because they told me they were not a collection agency because i asked them. they insisted they were a lawyers office. I am literally a nervous wreck over their constant aggravation. I wish to seek an attorney for mental anguish and for non stop panic attacks making me feel as if i'm having a hear attack. Please help me. i am at wits end, i do not know what to do. I feel like this is worse than becoming a bilateral amputee a year ago. yes, its much more stressful.

I'm a senior citizen and was getting a lot of debt collectors calling me for awhile. I just changed my phone number, and it was on the do not call list. the funny thing is the collectors were looking for people with other names, not even my name, and I have no debts as I have no credit cards except just one I use. it seems like a random type of scam to me, like people fishing for a fool. basically very annoying. good for the FTC. glad to hear you guys are on top of it.

why didn't they go to jail?

So,what's the number to call regarding fraudulent collectors and scammers?

You can file a consumer complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online at www.ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-FTC-HELP.

i keep getting calls saying they are filing charges against by ss number and name and once they do so at my work or home i will lose my rights. they call from all #'s and have acctualy claimed to be the FBI. the next day i called the number and asked what or whom i was calling and they said cash net usa. they call family friends ect . I want to no how they have ther #'s do they have access to my phone calls

Good work!!

I want my money from kings guard security co., from a job in Lagos, Nigeria !!

I received a call like that from the company named they also called my wife my 2daughters one in MPLA and one in nova rayon fl threatening them physically and emotionally. By the way I filed a complaint with you guys a year ago with the same co bilking me out of 1600. On a loan fraud

Bravo FTC. I for one really appreciate this action. I've gotten a few of these calls regarding phantom debt and was pretty stressed over them until I learned what they were. Thank you very much.

Isn't this fraud!? Why aren't they in jail?

Yes, why didn't they go to jail -- it seems that they at least committed wire fraud and it does seem to be a criminal case? Yet, there is no mention of criminal prosecution.
Frankly, this is why it is so profitable to commit these types of crimes -- they will not be prosecuted

This is great news. The problem is there are so many others out there like Pinnacle and it's so hard to stop just one. Keep fighting, FTC!

Bravo! It's ridiculous the tricks these guys use. The thing is they are "trained" to do this. I'm so glad that's one company that was put down. Maybe the other "debt collectors" out there will rethink their methods. I could NEVER work for a company that did this.

Pinnacle is not the only company that uses practices such as this. I sure hope that all the scammers out there are shut down soon!

I, too, have gotten many of these debt collectors calls. Unfortunately I paid so many of them as I thought they were real & thought I was helping my son. Got way deep in debt & just had to refinance to get rid of my credit card debt due to these SCAMMERS. I no longer answer their calls & pay no attention to their threats.

This looks like the FTC has written these responses. I am still receiving this call and was finally going to report it here. But, now I see the FTC is claiming to have nabbed these guys and put a stop to the fraud over a year ago - Typical gov't. agency, shutting down group under one name, while they just pop-up again under new names! THIS IS NOT SUCCESS!!!

I just received a call from Standard Mediations saying they represented First Banks and were trying to collect on a $7500. debt I bank there so I know this call was 100% bogus. When I cited this article the guy got pretty angry

What is the best way to find out if the company that is calling to collect a debt, is actually the owner of the debt? I have one that I would assume is in collection. I have no way of finding out when the last payment wast made, but I'm pretty sure it was 4 years ago. Once they get me on the phone they are very aggressive about starting payments ASAP for the entire balance(or they'll have to "move forward"?) There are at least $800 in late charges & other fees on a little account with a $2,500 limit. The first late fee was due to their own computer problems & I wasn't able to make it back to the store to pay in time. (I didn't have checks or a computer at the time.)The late charge caused the account to go over my limit, so an over limit fee was added. The fees were nearly $40 each. Suddenly an account on which I normally paid $25 per month, every month, had a minimum payment due of the entire over-limit amount including the interest charges plus the normal minimum payment. It was more than I could possibly pay. I tried calling but they were having a lot of problems at the time & I don't remember being able to reach anyone about it. I did the stupid thing and ignored it. So the account that I had such a good record of always paying on time with a little (tiny) bit extra each month snowballed into a debt I couldn't handle -- due to what I would call fee gouging, but I don't know if that's correct. I figure this must be the year after which they can't contact me about it which is why they're willing to offer a payment plan of $50/month for eternity... to pay the balance with fees, late charges & interest. They say that if I could come up with enough money to pay the entire balance in 3 payments they would be happy to settle for a whole lot less... So, because I can't afford that I have to pay more. It probably sounds like a minute amount, but I live on disability income, so it's huge to me. I know it's too small to file bankruptcy, but I'd like to know my rights. I know that when they purchase these debts they generally pay less than half of the total debt. They don't want to wait another second for me to get my info together so we can start automatic payments to go through electronically each month. I've been told that once you set up an electronic payment it's impossible to stop the payments, and that some less scrupulous companies will change the amount. I get the idea that they don't want me to have time to talk to an attorney to find out about my rights or to do too much investigation. The original debt was to Citibank on a MasterCard. I'm afraid that if I make a payment now, that I'll be losing some option or another. I believe it would at least start the 4 years or whatever, over. Anyway, any info at all would be appreciated. They are supposed to call tomorrow at 5 pm. - When I say "they" I meant the rep and his supervisor, who is the person he had me talk to about doing something about that fee amount. He was quite rude. Sorry this is so long. :\

I keep getting calls from 210-520-6400, telling me he represents Chase bank- we don't have anything with Chase. Google his name, see other spam complaints, and it is Mark Almendarez, San Antonio, TX. You need to "Chase" him- he has been calling every night.I have registered complaints with you at least 4-5 times.Thank you-please help.

Why aren't they thrown in jail for fraud? All they get is lose the $$ they stole, what do they have to lose? It's like those fundraisers, "cancer children of america" that raise 100 mil, pay $1000 to actual children with cancer and pocket the rest. They get slapped with a 10 mil judgment, and get to keep 90 mil.

i filed a complaint about Morris Jackson & Hunter a debt settlement company.I keep hoping I'll get my $5700.00 back. This was from the year 2012.

I,think FTC,do the greatest job helping people like me how to deal with thieves to get money from innocent peoples they neverheard of it.I,love FTC web site so,helpful and a guidance how to deal with such problums.

Another debt collector you do NOT need to give monies to is Portfolio Recovery. They will call and call and call from various numbers from various locations. I actually spoke to them once and I was harassed and yelled at. They have been harassing me for almost 8 years over debt I do not owe. There are formal letters you can find online (I found one on my state's website) that state you deny the debt they say you owe, and that you demand proof the debt is valid, and to stop contacting you. I sent one and a month later I got a letter saying my account was closed. They are bottom feeder debt collectors that try to intimidate you to pay debts that are not valid.

You are correct. If you want the collector to stop calling, you have to write them a letter telling them to stop calling you immediately. Send the letter by Certified Mail and ask for a “return receipt.” The law says he must stop calling you when he gets your request in writing. This, however, will not get rid of the debt. Watch this video and learn more about Dealing with Debt Collectors.

Got this email from my church

Hi xxx,

We got a call from Justin from Pinnacle Mediation Co. He was looking for you and left this message:

Case# 785-1024610 He mentioned something about a civil suit? He has asking to speak with our human resources? He said please call him back at 678-894-1253

This is good, but not good enough. I had collector that came to me with the Suffolk County Sheriff's emblem on the envelope and the "Warrant" letter (for a medical bill of emergency surgery from the lawyer who was the brother of one of the surgeons). I was going through so much personal stuff at the time that I needed the SCPD's help, after my surgery recovery, with an abusive husband - and you know what they said to me? If there were any warrants out for my arrest, they would have to lock ME up! So, I had to keep taking the abuse and had no one to turn to. That's okay. I am very much used to the abuse, threats, bullying now and it is no big deal - in fact, I don't know what to do with myself when there is no abuse. Kids got used to being abused and bullied by him, too.
The collector refused small payments. They refused to let me contact them with tricks of voice messages to call different telephone numbers that were never manned. We all suffered so these so called legal bill collectors can play collection agency games. Some of them deserve jail.

214-504-2986. Stated I would be charged with check & bank fraud if I didn't return the call today. I called the local FBI and they said to report it here.

Midland Credit Management sending mail threatening to send & use SS# to creditors against me.Is that legal?

How would you feel if a caller kept calling you then all of a sudden the call is stating a construction company on the same no. that has been calling all the time. I freak out. I answered the call. I was told I owed a debt! I ask what debt. They refused unless I give them information. I told them to screw off and that they are now in trouble with the law for utilizing a spoofing software just to even collect the debt. I harassed them for about and hour. I think they hate me. Oh Well!

Its absolutely amazing how citizens are protected by the FTC. I read your post and I found it very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

They now changed their names to the following: Enhanced Acquisitions, LLC, The Cooper Mediation Firm, Canyon Creek LLC, Delray Capital and Global Solutions. Please put a stop to the harassing calls. They are sending out false debt bills with all these names in correspondence -- (855) 463-8828

I have found more information about "The Cooper Mediation Firm" the owner, location, and other assumed names. I can tell you that they are not located in dallas, Texas. Jerry Verhagen is connected to Delray Capital, The Cooper Mediation Firm, and Rothstien Acquisition Firm. Delray lost their bond in Texas. The Texas Bar and General Attorney Office could not verify the businesses. Jerry Verhagen is located in New York city under the Rothstien Acquisition Firm. Also they are networked with "Capital Resource Consultants LLC" Beware of this person and scam.

The Cooper Mediation Firm will not confirm mailing address the when searching online the address is a restaurant in the town of North Tonawanda NY

I got a call like this. Complete bullying gorilla tactics. They said they were sending someone to an address that I only lived at for less than a week (psycho roomate back in my 20's) & I haven't had that address for more than 20+ yrs nor lived in that state. I've lived in 2 places since, 17 yrs & going on 8yrs. Long story short I knew it was all bs & highly illegal for them to do that so I told them good luck with that & do what they had to do & I hung up the phone. Keep up the good work FTC.

1-678-551-7826 keeps calling about collecting money from me in order to avoid warrant being issued for my arrest. Claims to be GR & Associates out of Georgia. SCAMMERS!

I got a call from a lady threaten me with charges and jail time for a loan that's been paid. She told me to call this number (855)329-3737 and give them my address so they can serve me with a warrant. She couldn't give me no details as to what this is about.

If you ask them in writing, the debt collector has to provide verification of the debt in wirting. The article Fake Debt Collectors provides tips to help you handle calls like the one you describe

USR Solutions LLC...called from a number that was restricted..but left this number for us to call back 214-613-0424 and the name he left was Robert Loven, said that I owed a debt of over 750.00 and that i had 2 civil cases pending against me for check fraud and bank fraud...because i had took out a payday loan over 2 yrs ago and never paid it. I did take out a couple of payday loans but i paid them off. but my aunt said it was a scam, because someone called her and said the same thing and she ,so she called the number back and questioned him to death he became angry and started saying all kinds of nasty things to her...but she just laughed at him. and told him she was going to report him...he hung up on her. i had my number changed ...but i will not fall for this kinda crap again...

This same guy called me today. I told him to send me some thing in writing then hung up.

I have received phone calls days in a row from a woman who gives her name which I believe is fictitious. She called with an indignant voice, didn't identify anything else and just left a message with a "file number" and said that people were coming to my home address and work address if in 24-48 hours if I didn't reply.

Being that I am newly widowed a little over one year, A LOT has happened right after my husband's unexpected passing. I lost my car, my job, and then my home. It took a long time for me to be able to at least have a regular income because my unemployment ceased shortly after it took a long time for my state of residence to process my initial claim! I was almost in tears because I felt like I'm finally getting to take those baby steps to get my life back on track and now I'm getting voicemail messages like this one and NUMEROUS calls every day from unknown numbers. What can I do?

Robert Woods 561-235-7900, this person calls me and threatens that I'm going to be sued for a payday loan that I have never had. SOMEONE needs to stop these people. I would love to assist in helping to do that.

855 202 9188

Called and left me a threatening voice mail over a payday loan I do not believe belongs to me. Said she had papers in front of her to file in district court and I would be charged with bank fraud, etc. I did call them back and asked for a debt validation letter. He told me they didn't have to provide one because they were "attorneys." I then asked for a company name, three different times, and all I got was Regional. They even called my parents and left a voicemail telling them to get in contact with me because I was going to jail.

im so glad to see this information. I have been harassed with the same calls and the language is verbatim. I was just scammed out of 1,850.00 and he is still asking for more, but I got a surprise when he calls again.

I have received several calls from 855-323-7424. Well, actually their number is blocked until they leave this number in the message to call them back. The man today claims to be Don Sherry with Morgan Harris Law Firm & stated that he has papers in a civil case to file against me if I do not call them back IMMEDIATELY. I have done my share of investigating this number on the internet. I cannot find this law firm and all message boards say the callers with this phone number are scammers. That is kind of easy to believe b/c a few calls were initally made by women and now they have a man calling to threaten me. I have filed a complaint now through the FTC and I hope something is done to stop these predators.

a few seconds ago

I got this message call today twice that I am in an IRS criminal offense from a JASON BRAVO Indian Accent stating that he is from the criminal investigation bureau of (IRS). If I don't call them back I will be arrested Im not calling either. He continued to say that I was being charged with various federal crimes that I was clueless about.
Telephone number: 1281-936-9256 get them.

Caller: Claims they from criminal Investigation Bureau in IRS

Call Type: Telemarke

Caller: Claims they from criminal Investigation Bureau in IRS

Call Type: Telemarketer

I got a call from this number and the Guy said he was Jason Bravo a senior offcer from crime investigation unit with the IRS....he stated that he was reading me an afidavid an I would be arrested shortly. He continued to say that was being charged with various federal crimes that I was clueless about.

I have reported these crooks to the do not call complaint to the FTC to the consumer protection agency I have logged and reported at least 20 phone calls of abuse. Since I have so much proof over the last two years of being abused by these cracks why don't I get a portion of the settlement? My do not call reports hello should net me at least $10,000 per abusive call?

I have been getting a call that they are a pre trial
company and they have a case against me I do not owe anyone any money they keep calling I Have been already been scammed do not fall for it Just hang up or block the number.

I received a call from 612-354-4053. This is an automated call claiming they are from a legal processing and summons division. In which they do not state the company they are calling from neither the company they are calling for. They are asking for a call back to verify a current address and business address. The voice mail states that I have 2 fraudulent charges against me and using my name and social security number. Message also states that non compliance is forfeiting rights to take care of matter outside of court in which the client is willing to settle outside of court. They state that this is the third and final attempt good luck in court.

When I called back, I advised that I have filed a complaint with the Attorney General and they hang up but continue to call me. I again called them back and advised that I was filing a complaint with the FBI and the guy "Bryan Black" told me he was going to block my number. I asked them to stopped calling and they said they would not stop calling. I advised that I would block their number and was told that I could block this number but they would just call from other numbers and that they had offices in 32 states. This is harassment and I want it to stop immediately.

I have a collection account for a payday loan. Its through enhanced acq but I can't find any info for them other then the address to the ups store someone else posted. Its like they don't exist. I am trying to improve my credit but have decided not to mess with this one because it doesn't seem a legitimate collection agency. I don't know if I should dispute this debt and possibly rattle the bees nest or leave it alone. I'm definitely not sending my info or money to a ups store. I want this off my credit report but I don't know it that is possible since these people do not seem like a legitimate collection agency.

I keep getting calls from several numbers & different states...some robo calls some human..male/female..claiming I will be arrested for a online loan default...wont send proof just keep calling me with threats..Capital Harris Miller & Associates...Im sick of these threats and have filed a complaint with the FTC. Please make them stop...

People call claiming to be collecting on a payday loan issued by canyon creek now for a loan issued back in September of 2012 (when it was issued back in august of 2012. It has been paid in full back in June 2013 through a legit negotiator. They started calling once a month around the 15th of month like clockwork on a paid in full loan, now been called twice this week alone, claiming financial fraud on non existent loans. I keep contacting my state attorney generals office, and been on first name basis with one of the agents since I have been calling enough times. People are so hard up that they use scare tactics like you have to go to court to fight allegations. It makes me laugh that caller Id shows Number calling from and voicemail tells you to call a number totally in another state (even if it is toll free number). A clue if it's a scam is the number you are to call back is a 855 toll free number.

I just received a call like this without identification just left # 1-844-745-3371 call within 48hrs to give statement.

A man named Charles keeps calling me from "the litigation department" as "the assistant to the attorney". This is his latest number 855-901-3532. He claims I owe a bank $2500 and need to pay over the phone immediately to avoid litigation. I have checked my credit and no such debt exists.

this phone number has been calling my family members, not me regarding a debt I supposedly have with them, when I call they answer with "hello" not with a business name, when I ask who they are they ask me who I am and all they gave me was a name of Tier One, saying they are the step further from debt collection. i don't even want to bother with these people. If they want to get paid why don't they send us bills thru the mail? why are they harassing my family?

I was arrested after I was civil sued in District Court by Durwood Hester of Time Financing Services out of Morehead City, North Carolina. The charges were Fraud-Disposing of Financed Property.I hired an attorney and his fee was 750.00 and my attorney negotiated on a settlement of 850.00 when I origanally owed 920.00. I was in court 3 different times and the 3rd time the case was dismissed. But this charge remains on my criminal record. I have to pay my attorney 250.00 to have it Expunged from my record. The strees caused me to fail 3 college classes and as a result my financial aid was suspended. The first time in court a man went before the judge on the same exact charge by the same Durwood Hester of the same Time Financing Services. I think that this Durwood Hester is making a regular practice of violating the Consumer Protection Act laws which state that a person is not to be arrested after a civil judgment as this is considered harassment and abuse by debt collectors.

Report problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General’s office, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law

Family member got call from 855 999 8062 leaving threatening vmail case number claimed coming to serve..no such serve Google's the number several complaints about fake debts

If you get a call about a debt that doesn’t ring true, report it to the FTC. Your complaints help us stop rip-off artists, scammers, and fraudsters.

This is all true! Received a check today from th FTC Re: Asset Management settlement. It's only 40 some odd bucks, but moreover, it's nice they are putting the clamps to these scumbags. I do have to admit, I will kinda miss their calls. I used to abuse them back until they would hang up on me.

I have been harassed by 'private investigators' 'mediation consultants' 'the authorities' with phone calls for the individual that obviously had my phone number prior to me. I have called back the numbers and then tracked down the address I was given, called the property manager and gave him the details; twice.

Calls were made from California, Colorado, Florida, and Texas. Threats to have a warrant served at place of business or home and that all rights would be forfeited, etc. Another, today actually, told me she didn't care 'who I was' two times and hung up on me. I telephoned the police in the Texas town that showed up on my caller I.D. This really has to stop.

Getting a new phone number while applying for jobs, graduate school, etc. is not an option. I need help.

Phone numbers from today were (817) 491 6052 & (682) 301 4914

I'm getting calls from several numbers saying someone passed a bad check using my name and SS number. They leave a phone number and call often.

1. I don't write checks. 2.If a bad check would have been processed to my bank and refused, my bank would have contacted me.

Name used is Premier Portfolio group or something like that. I just keep ignoring their calls, but just the constant recorded autocalls is harassment in my opinion.

It could be that someone used your name and Social Security number to write a check.

You can check your credit report to see if someone mis-used your personal information. This FTC article explains how to get your free credit reports.

I have also been harrassed by "Canyon Creek" i even paid them...they told me to put alll large dogs away and any weapons because they are sending the warrant squad...i was scared to death...then i started to research...today about a year later they called again...my mom as well as myself...i already spoke to the bank and had them blocked from removing funds and then got a new account...they told my mom they are the fraud division...she was calling me all petrified...i told her to tell them 1. I said im dead 2. The statue of limitations on this debt has been long passed 3. I never authorized sale of any of my debts 4. If u dont know my actual last name im pretty sure your the one committing the fraud!!! Thank u and good day!! They stated they are calling my local court system...I told them GOOD LUCK and i guess ill see u in court then!!! I started to do a lot of research on credit now and am no longer afraid!!!

Pinnacle Asset Group LLC is at it again. All they did was change the name a little and they are off to the races. Not only do they call and state they are a legal processing firm but then also threaten to file bogus 1099-C forms with the IRS if you refuse to pay them on a non-existent debt for a company that doesn't exist. From my understanding of late they have in fact been filing the 1099's just to screw with people that refuse to pay them for their bogus schemes. Once they file it with a ssn, who ever that ssn belongs to has to prove the debt isn't theirs the filing company has to prove nothing and they walk away scott-free. I am hoping the FTC and the IRS will set up and do something about this latest tactic.

You can report this to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. The details you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations. Blog comments don't go into the database.

They are still doing it. They kept leaving threatening messages about some bogus lawsuit on my voice mail and they are wrongly reporting a debt they say they bought from Verizon on my credit report as an open revolving account like a credit card. They caused my credit score to drop 32 points in a month.

If there are mistakes on your credit report, contact the credit reporting companies. This FTC article about disputing errors on your credit report tells you more.

I just got a call from Kent , OH from a lady saying I open up a magazine subscription in 2011. She said I agree to there terms and had payed them two times but it doesn't say how I paid them. It state that after that I stop paying and it went up to $1000 and they will send it to legal court and file it Wednesday. She said I pay once on September 8th 2011 the day after I just had my daughter and still in the hospital. She said maybe it was an automatic payment. Which I don't have a debit card or even was working at that time. She also said maybe it was cash or money order. I am in California and I don't do those kind of transaction or even have a debit card. She try to say maybe it was my husband. We just got married last year and he just recently open an debit card 2 years ago. Sound kind of fishy. She told me if I can think of anything to call her back. She said it will be file Wednesday and they will see me in court for not receiving any payments. Right before she call me I got a call from Washington . This sound really ridiculous. She said I subscribe to glamour and other magazine. I'm pretty sure if they got payment from me then I would of known. Also that I wouldn't pay to have magazine sent to me because I don't need them.

If this is a debt collector, you have rights under federal law. We’ve written on this blog about it before and you can also find information about your rights in this article. Debt collectors are prohibited from saying that legal action will be taken against you, if doing so would be illegal or if they don’t intend to take the action. In addition, debt collectors may not contact you at work if they’re told (orally or in writing) that you’re not allowed to get calls there.

A legitimate debt collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. The notice has to include the name of the creditor you owe money to, and what you can do if you don’t think you owe the money. Read Debt Collection to learn more about your rights.

Well, I got a call a couple of weeks ago from a lady that calls herself mrs. Clifton, told me I was being summons if I didn't pay an old credit card bill from 9 years ago. She scared me so bad, saying it was a fraud felony and that would be jail, so I gave her some money, not knowing my rights, but I think the bill was paid off in a settlement years ago,

so I'm having to research it down, she did send a bogus agreement paper after two weeks, when I called her and told her I wanted to see some kind of paper, no address, no signature of any kind. So I called her back today, and asked for the address, I'm sure it's bogus, I asked who the ASG lawyer name was and I wanted the bar number, she got mad about that, she said she would refund my money and take me to court.

I know she is lying about refunding the money, I asked her is this ASG own the rights to this old credit card, she told me that the chase card hired them to collect for them. Give me a break!!! She wants 4800 dollars, at 200 a month, when I ended the call, she waited 3 minutes and called from an unknown number, and said she talked to the creditor, and they are willing to take 1200 by the end of the month.

i told her, will let me think about and I will get back with her. It's bad enough that she got 400 out of me and my disabled veteran husband, that served the country for almost 30 years, we didn't know anything like this goes on, but we are learning fast. We both have been stressed over this. None of this can be legal, she calls from 8553118581 and 8553372994, I hope my mistake and being so dumb, telling my story helps others not to answer calls from these numbers.

Thank you for telling your story so people can see how the scammers work. The information you have would be useful in a complaint. Please report this to the FTC at FTC.gov/complaint. The details you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

I have already sent a report via FTC.gov/complaint. I will paste it here so you have an idea of what I'm currently going through. I hope this helps others realize that there are actions to be taken and you don't just spimply give in to these scammers.

On Thursday, June 9th 2011 at 4:43pm I received an email from intfinservices   by a Mr. Corey Webber; Recovery Specialist/ Internet Finance Services (713-482-8912) The email began in bright red color my First and Last name, SSN, DL, DOB and Home Address. "Thank You for your recent business. Our records indicates, however, that the below reference account is currently overdue." Payday Today" Loan type: Payday Loan. Loan Date: 9-27-2009. Account: 1J1022. Original Amount: $477. Amount Due: $1J1022. Deposited to: Suntrust. Bank Account: 10000******** (Side note; this account is closed and inactive since May 31, 2010)

It than reads in bold, "Please be advised this a 2nd notification that we will debit your account on 05/20/11." It goes on to state that they attempted to contact me several times via email and phone to resolve the matter. That they would debit the said account in the amount of $777 because lack of response was treated as consent to do so.

I attempted to reach this "Corey Webber" with no luck and I have since decided it was scam mail with possible identify theft, as I have never incurred a loan outside of my own personal bank. However today, 5/18/2016 I received a phone call at 8:14am from "United Credit Bureau Services" to confirm my current phone number and address. Which they read aloud and I did not provide, and that a issued subpoena would be filed for litigation for bank fraud. Their services were attained by "Payday loan Canyon Creek Management" and could not divulge further details about the client. I have since called both my old bank Suntrust and current bank USAA about possible fraudulent activity but I am unsure how to handle all of this entirely. I hope to hear back from FTC in additional ways to handle this. Thanks

The caller might have been a fake debt collector. A fake debt collector may have some of your personal information. A caller may be a fake if he

  • wants you to pay a debt you don't recognize
  • refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number
  • asks you for personal financial or sensitive information
  • pressures you to scare you into paying, threatens to have you arrested, or says he'll report you to law enforcement

If you think a caller might be a fake, ask him for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell him you refuse to discuss any debt until he sends you a written "validation notice." The notice must say the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Had some one call claiming to be with PCH legal, and calling to collect a debt that the collector deemed me able to pay and choosing not too. They said the loan was taken out in april 2010, and deposited on a net spend card. Neither of which happened.! And the address they claimed i used on loan was not the one I lived at, at this time. They threatened a law suit and charges of bank fraud being brought against me if I didnt get this paid. two weeks go by, and they didnt get their money like they were expecting, so they called back and told me that the documents pressing charges were being sent to their legal team and they would file with the county I lived in. And a warrant would be issued for my arrest. All numbers they used were 855-256-7438, 855-207-9705 and 844-515-1207 and Tracy was the name of person that called me....And two other names they used THE processing Firm and CP Investors

Thank you for telling your story so people can see how the scammers work. The information you have would be useful in a complaint. Please report this to the FTC at FTC.gov/complaint. The details you give will go into a database that law enforcement uses for investigations.

My wife and daughter got calls from these scam artists. They threatened a civil suit, but offered to let me pay the debt over the phone. I told them to send me documentation to review. If I get anything from them, copies will be going to the FTC. This is BS. Scammers need to get a real job. Thanks to all for the posts. They were very helpful.
