Scammers are trying to get personal information from people by pretending to help with applications for disability benefits and claims. A recent alert from the Social Security Inspector General warns of this phishing scam, and — whether or not you’ve started an application for benefits — these scammers could contact you. They’re taking a shot in the dark, hoping that you have started an application, and hoping you’ll give them a little more info over the phone. To “complete the process,” they might ask you to give, or confirm, your Social Security number or bank account numbers.

If scammers get your information, you could face identity theft and benefit theft. So here are a few things you can do to help protect yourself:

  • Never give your Social Security number or account numbers to someone who calls you.
  • Don’t wire money or send money using a prepaid debit card. In fact, never pay someone who calls out of the blue.
  • If you have disability benefits, regularly check their status, and review your statements to make sure they’re right.

If you have questions about disability benefits, or get calls offering help with them, call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. And read up on more ways to combat phishing and identity theft.

They are calling our cell phone numbers. We return the call through our ground line. They call themselves, "National Disability". We have asked them repeatedly to not call. They have a system by which they just use another phone number many times at least once per day. Many phone numbers they use are long distance for us, but then I have a written record from my ground line phone bills include all long distance so we can track them. I told them I would be reporting them to the Federal agencies for scam, fraud, and abuse. They also call from numbers that are not valid. When I attempt to call the numbers which are many times cell numbers, Verizon says that the number is not a valid phone number. We now will not answer phone numbers we do not recognize. Very annoying.

I have been getting calls from national disability for the past two weeks asking if, they can speak to me. I didn’t give out my name or personal information. They called me by name and I said that person don’t have this number anymore. The man wanted to know who was he talking to I threw a name out to him. When I asked what was the nature of him calling he confirmed that he was from social security administration and was here to help me get my disability. The number is 9106006828. They constantly calling every three minutes.

I tried calling the SSA number to report a scam call, That number was NOT working correctly and I had to call the regular SSA number and TRY to report the info. Numbers they used to call me were 270 232-2250 and 617 996-8876. I have never received a call like this until I called SSA to start a claim for SS disability. This tells me they have one or more employees stealing MY info and selling it to the scammers

Been getting calls from Pete at National Disability wanting to help me with my application. I Googled the two phone numbers that he called from, 360-787-9750 and 360-234-3449, and got nothing. He left high-pressure messages about helping with my application but calls a lot. Obvious scam.

I received a call from some very articulate women to help create a false sense of security. They said that I had recently applied for SS disability, and I said no, and she suddenly hung up. For giggles, I called back and another 'lovely' person started asking a lot of questions and she said she was from National Security. I asked if that was a company and she repeated herself so I asked for the URL and she hung up. The number was NJ - 201-579-5039. They got my number from a job board. WATCH OUT!

I keep receiving phishing calls from numbers that mimic my cell phone number. The caller identified himself as "Pete from National Disability" and wanted to help me complete my application for disability benefits. He left a phone number to call: 617-996-8876. What would help this from happening to consumers is make funds available to those of us that are going through the SSDI process and have a real claim. We're selling everything to keep above water and still have 7 months until our hearing.

614-845-6396. Just called. Left the following message, calling because you had inquired about applying for monthly social security disability benefits. If you could call me back as soon as you can at 617-996-8876. We can get started on your application for monthly disability money. This is a time sensitive matter faster action is required for these types of social security benefits. So if you're already receiving social security benefits. Feel free to ignore this call. This isn't an issue you need to worry about but if you did want to apply for Social Security disability benefits. Just had a call from Peru. Knew what it was but answered anyway to go off on them. Guy said his name was "Moses" and had my name and said he was to help me with my disability and if I was working. I said I did not have a disability and asked who he was and how he got my info. He paused for a long time and said he was a "researcher" and was getting information to "match" me with a benefits person for disability. I started going off on him and asked again for his information and how he got mine. He said "Moses" and he was with "Independent something something." He had my information for disability and needed me to verify and give him more so he could match me with someone. I said no and that I go to the VA and did not apply for any "disability". The number was 51 2860119.

Somebody claiming to be from dissabily services to help me get signed up for S.S. I could not tell for sure if it was a real thing because there is a dissability services in a town nearby. That's the problem, there are so many telemarketers from outright scammers to legit companies offering services we don't need. It does not matter, I talk to them all. Iget as much info as I can about them and pass it along to the proper authorities. I also give them my info, all fake. I keep them on the line as long as possible. Waiting thier time so they can't get ro an actual sucker, some gullable senior. II went from hating to enjoying these calls. If more people talked to the telemarketers instead of wring blogs the telemarketers could not find enough suckers and telemarketing would dry up and blow away. Talk to them it is your civic duty.

Hey FTC how can we stop these calls? Obviously they aren't stopping. I have gotten a call once a week for 3 weeks now. I have them on block but they can leave a voice email. My calls are coming from the same number of 440-482-8766 and to call 617-996-8876. I would not be surprised if these low life scums are also calling from these other local numbers to my area. I am sure they are preying on those seniors who have no clue they are scammers.

"Pete", who claimed to be with National Disability, called to help me submit for Social Security disability, although he never used my name when leaving the message. Plus, I'm not eligible for disability. The number showed up as a local number, not the 617-996-8876 number he said to call him back on. Nothing but a scam.
