Online sellers stung by scammers spoofing PayPal brand

Selling your used stuff online has become commonplace. So have scams taking advantage of the good names of reputable online companies. At the FTC, we’ve heard from people stung by scammers spoofing PayPal. The scam generally goes like this: You post a high-value item, like a used car, for sale online. In no time at all, you get an email from a buyer willing to pay full price — or more! But he sets conditions; he is only willing to pay by PayPal or insists the sale must happen right away. What’s really going on? A ruse to steal your personal information, money or merchandise.

Here are some suspicious situations to look for and steps to safe selling online:

Scenario One: The buyer claims he can only pay via PayPal. Don’t have a PayPal account? No problem, he says. He’ll send you an email with a link so you can set one up.

What should you do? Don’t take the bait. The link will send you to a website masquerading as PayPal. Any information you enter will be collected by the bogus buyer, and may be used to commit fraud. If you need to set up an account, go directly to PayPal.com.

Scenario Two: “Check your email!” The buyer claims he has sent payment to your PayPal account with additional funds so you can ship the merchandise ASAP, but oops, he sent too much money. He asks you to return the extra money via a money wiring service. It’s all a lie, including the extra money the buyer says he included.

What should you do? Log into your PayPal account. Make sure you’ve been paid before you ship. Never follow links in emails from people you don’t know. The safest approach is to open a browser window, navigate to PayPal.com, and log in yourself. Also, if the buyer claims to have sent extra money, and asks for some back, that’s a big red flag.

Scenario Three: The buyer sends you real money through a real PayPal account, and you ship him the car. Problem is, the PayPal account belongs to someone else! You might need to return the money even though the scammer has your wheels.

What now? Contact PayPal and ask them to open an investigation. The company offers seller protections so you aren’t liable for unauthorized transactions. Also file a complaint with the FTC and your local police department.

Learn how to recognize and avoid common online scams. And contact PayPal at spoof@paypal.com if you’ve been stung by a PayPal spoof. The company wants to hear from you.

I got this mail today...

I am selling a boat and got this mail from someone that wanted to by the boat, and that gave me red flags all over, and I suspect this is a fraud.

The mail came from this email adress: Cantu Miguel <cantum822@ First mail: Do you still have it for sale ?Answer: The boat is still for sale. Where do You live ?I am on job at the time, so I can give You a contact-person if You want to see the boat Hilsen

2nd Mail: Thanks I'm just asking about it to make sure its in good condition as im buying it for my son and he doesn't know about it, so can you assure me i will not be disappointed? also no shipment involved as i have a mover that will come for it. Im okay with the price and condition,I can only pay you via one of the fastest and secure way to pay online (PayPal).. Do you have a PayPal account?Let me know asap so i can arrange the payment through PayPal.my shipper will be coming to pick it up as soon as the payment clears into your account. So if you're ready to move forward, just fill out the info below so I can work everything out!

What's the condition, Any damages? Are you the original owner and why are you selling it? Does it have any mechanical issues? Can you send me more photos or a short video ? Do you have the title in hand? Is there a loan on the title? Do you have a verified account with PayPal? if yes do get back to me with your paypal account details. What is your bottom price ? Do you have any offer's yet? Looking forward to read back from you and I hope you can respond and answer my questions appropriately in your next e-mail. BTW!

Answer: Hi Cantu I did not get where You are from ? And where You are shipping the boat ? I got a couple interested in it, and they will come to have a look at it in the end of this week. Me, myself is at work and will not be home for aprox 2,5 week, but my ontactperson on the add will take care of them, so if any of them are interested in going forward, I have to give them the chance first. Little of the boat. I am selling the boat because I am away on job more than 7 - 8 months a year, and therefore I dont get to use it as I had hoped when I bought it. It is of coarse a used boat. The Webasto Heater need maintenance. There is need to change the car stereo in it. The engine had a total service two years ago, so thats ok. There is no loan on the boat. Answer:
I will see if the people who called me first still is interested before I go any further.
I did not fall for it, but reported it to PayPal...

SCAM ALLERT. Selling my car thru cars.com , got a text as early as 5am . Text saying that he's from MA and he is interested with a car and ne will send his agent/ shipper to test drive and pick up the car . He said he could only pay with PayPal and asking for my email and name. RED FLAG I replied and told him I only deal with cashiers check or cash and only do transactions inside a bank for imediate deposit. Never text back. Beware lot of Scammers thru buyers and time share.

Which local law enforcement agency is responsible if there's someone coming to pick up a "paid" vehicle to arrest this person? Our local PD seems to be too "busy" to handle that....

Same scam here, selling a car in auto trader, was contacted within 12 hours. Even has a Facebook page with a military guy on it.

Do you have the extra keys, Do you have the spare tire, Where did you get your car serviced, Have you ever had any transmission repairs and Is there any rust on the vehicle? I'm ready to pay your asking price but not cash in person because I am serving in the US army and currently been deploy to Fort Huachuca Military Base , Arizona and calls are restricted at the moment and my only quickest payment option is PayPal, its safe fast and secure and i will be responsible for the PayPal transaction charges so you can get your expected amount. If you don't have an account with PayPal, its pretty easy to open one, Just log onto paypal. com and sign up. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? As I am buying the vehicle for my dad and I'm very sure he will love this vehicle, his a mechanic and a handy man, so if there is anything that need to be fixed in it just let me know he will handle it. I have a mover that will come for the pick up once payment clears in your account and he will handle the title for me.I would appreciate if you email me with more pictures (if available) too since i won't be able to see this in person. I look forward to hear from you with the information below. I look forward to hear from you with the information below. Your PayPal e-Mail Address : Full name: Phone Number- Firm Price: Zip code for pickup: Thanks Gomez

Same here. Name David Edmonds Sergeant e9. Couldn't spell worth a crap. That tipped me off. Thought of the old Nigerian scam lol

Craigslist Scammer by the name of "carmen rizo" on behalf of a Recent Craigslist ad :
"Requesting this transaction should be done via PayPal,I'm in Michigan, I'm a flight attendant at AA so my schedule tends to be a little crazy and I'll be flying back & forth, i won't able to deal in person but i have a pick up agent that will be coming for the pickup after the payment has been made."

(Below is a message I received from a Craigslist scammer responding to an ad for a vehicle I had for sale. The number to watch out for is 208-568-5931)

Thank you for getting back to me. What's the condition and why are you selling it? Any offer yet and are you the owner? I'm just asking to make sure I would not Be disappointed in it so can you Assure me that it is in good state and that i will not be disappointed with it? I'm ready to pay your asking price, but the issue is I'm a Marine Officer and I'm not in my own state now, I'm on a secret mission in Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany GA and use of mobile phone is currently restricted at the military base, But I'm able to access email anytime as we will make use of laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send money via PayPal anytime.Since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal. SEMPER FI

Come on now you have to give this one points for using the term Semper Fi don't ya? What a nice touch for a scammer! This has to be my favorite so far!

BEWARE - Donna Miller using email donnamiller2020

Basically she says she can only pay with PayPal and I'll send my shipping agent to pick up the item at your house - you just need to send them the shipping fee by Western Union - don't worry I'll include extra in your PayPal payment. I HATE SCAMMERS! GET A REAL JOB!!

This number is a scammer who claims to be a SGM from the military but of course is currently at camp bowie in texas and cannot come to view the vehicle in person and can only pay by paypal. Name...alias is: Anthony Smith with the cel number 254-629-7815 Wanted me to send him a money request at: anthonysmith1@ I told him/her I didn't believe they are who they say they are and should be ashamed of themselves for trying to steal from people. Of course I didn't get any response.

He just replied to my Craigslist post wanting to buy a vehicle and pay me with paypal! What a loser!!! Thank you for posting this!

Oh goodness! good thing i checked google for scams like this! First I received a text message via a certain online text messaging app and asked me to send him an email. Here's our email thread...

Thanks and nice doing business with you

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I'm not always online. Sir are you currently in PH? It would be easier if you send me a text or call me thru viber or other online apps. Anyway, it will range from $256 to $265. Again, that depends on the exchange rate exclusive of shipping fee.

By the way, I think attachments failed to be sent to you during my previous email. It's the online invoice when i bought it. I'll try to attach it again so you'll have a reference.

On Friday, June 16, 2017, David Phillip <davidphillip200 wrote: Thanks for your response.I am very satisfied with it . How much is the final asking price in USD?

On Fri, Jun 16, 2017 at 1:52 AM, Karey wrote: Hi! Thanks for the interest. Yes it's still available. Depends on the exchange rate & MOP sir. When cashed out, it should be equivalent to the stated price/value in PHP.

Here's the total amount paid during import. It's a steal already if you're in PH. Thanks"

-as you can see he's actually responding to my emails but never answered my questions about his location and other mode of communication. When i saw his request to send it to his child i suddenly felt doubtful. Oh i'm glad i found this thread!

Gomez Wilson scam:

Ha ha, I'm interacting with one of these time-wasting jokers right now. Offering more than I asked, to include shipping. Pushing to do it quick. Insisting on paypal. The kicker was the phrase "i don't have a meet up schedule" which sounded strange and not correct english, and now I see that exact phrase in one of the posts above this one. Thanks everyone for this very helpful forum! Note the name "Raymond Thorton". I wrote "Raymond" back saying he sounds like a scammer but if he's a real buy he won't be insulted but instead will be grateful I'm so careful with my money ... and my laptops.

A scammer from this number: +1 (570) 521-6981 tried to do the paypal scam to me on my used car. This is what he wrote:
I'm Sgt Stafford, I would like to buy it,i like all i read about it,i would have the shipper visit you to pick it up after you receive the payment, i am on base at the moment and unable to deal in person, and i will be paying you through PayPal, do you have PayPal account for the payment?
I am sorry i dont have time for another mode of payment and PayPal is safe, fast and secure, you can simply logging to their website PayPal. and setup an account in 10min
Seller beware!

Here is the text I just got, always suspicious when they don't want to negotiatie price. Thanks everyone for clueing me in. 'Thanks for getting back, i'm cool with your price but i'm a flight attendant and won't be able to come for the pickup myself, I will love it if i can make the payment into your account via PayPal because is the easiest way of making payment this days. When you receive the money in your account today the pickup agent will be coming for the pickup tomorrow at the time that will be convenient for you'

Ugh, another one: I was trying to sell a car on Craigslist and this was the first e-mail they sent. Beware though, this one

-first pretended to be someone else and texted me saying "hey, my friend at this email address wants to buy your car" presumably to get rid of the CL relay email
-sent several full-fledged and functional FAKE Paypal emails
-Even called me to hustle me for the money from a spoofed American number in Tennessee (though he was definitely Nigerian or something).

Thanks for your response, I am sorry I am not available to view due to the nature of my job, I am in the United States Army and serve as a CBRN Specialist (74D). I want to buy this for my son birthday Gift. I am currently deployed wont be back till January . I am OK with your asking price and if you don't mind, I can only pay through PayPal at the moment because its the most secure way to make or receive payment online this is why I'll prefer using PayPal to pay you, all I need is your PayPal email to make the payment and if you don't have a PayPal account, its pretty easy to set up at www.paypal.com. I also have a few questions for you.

Whats its condition, any damages? Are you the original owner and what is your reason for selling?and last asking price?

I hope you consider my offer. I am ready to buy, so you can take the add off Craigslist. I'll have a courier person come for pick up and storage after I make payment and money is in your hand. Thanks for understanding, hope to read from you soon.

The phone numbers they used were 1-901-842-0650 and 1-915-320-5891

The giveaway is generally poor english. Also, a sense of urgency in purchasing the product. They use the same script for EVERY product. It is insane.

In the last 2 days I received 3 of those Paypal scam emails and one that is the following:

"i like the bmw and i am sure that it is O K i am fine with the pr ice from your listing so i will go ahead get the funds from my l oan broker. i will have to come and see and also check the car. I -will bring also my mechanic with me, so he will see it too. i will be able to pay you cash after i will inspect the car. i am very serious and i deal only face to face with cash. Do you have all the service docs and the history of-the_car?"

This is close to the same wording I have received in a past car sale. I am not sure what the deal is with this one but anybody who says "I am very serious" and "I am okay with the price", just delete the email. I real buyer will test drive the vehicle and offer less than asking price. I wish there was a way to stop these morons because they are wasting our time.

Selling a car on the internet. Received 2 text messages from two different scammers. One wanting use PayPal the other wanted me to deliver the car from Illinois to Delaware and use a personal check. These low life's are out in droves. Do not trust anybody and always search for scams. If you'll take a few extra minutes to research the number they are using and the area they are saying they are from doesn't match, chances are you're being scammed. Have a great day and be safe.

ive been emailing back and forth to a guy named taylor singer, and i wanted to sell my truck posted on kijjiji ,he is very intrested, and offers 800 above asking price,i was about to setup a pay pal and link my bank account to do same as all of u,But i came here first, just seemed to good to b true, sure enuff, almost word for word, ive even asked for other options for him to pay me,he said thats the only option his car peps use,and they where going to pickup my truck almost immediately ,READ THESE BEFORE U THINK U CAN GET AROUND THIS, they wont have the money, and they will take your item,so thank you all who posted here

Good ole Roy Cryan reached out to me today regarding a posting I created yesterday to sell some tires.

I am so glad others of you reported this this individual as a scam or I might have bit.

I posted some furniture yesterday and within an hour I had 3 people contacting me with the same request. What condition is it in and they must pay now with paypal. I have spent 2 days having the time of my life playing stupid and stringing them along. Heck I even offered to transport the furniture to CO to some poor soul who could not leave his base post to do a money order or anything. I have messed with him since yesterday telling him he had committed and I had turned down several buyers because of his commitment. Told him I would deliver and then he could see it in person and pay in cash. Haven't heard back from him. I tell them I won't use PayPal because of their political views but that they can pay the full amount to the shipping agent and have them bring me the cash when they come to pick up the furniture. I do play very stupid and sweet as can be all the while messing with them endlessly. I think I have had about 6 so far. One even told me they only use paypal because they have been ripped off too many times by checks and money orders! That one was probably my favorite. Ya know if they are going to waste my time I am gonna waste theirs. It is too funny for sure. Do people really fall for stuff like this? Never mind they must or the scammers wouldn't have a need to exist!
Stay diligent my friends!

Got the same thing on an outboard motor. Name used was Tony Crainge tony2012craige . Did not bite. As soon as I said I would not use PayPal there was an attempt to change my CL password. I have since changed several pw's.

This scam is still going on. I posted a car on cars.com and received an email almost identical to those described by previous commenters. Claimed to be a Marine posted in Afghanistan willing to pay full price sight unseen, a gift for someone, with the same questions and PayPal requirement. Same odd use of certain words like 'mover'.

Same thing for me. I had the privilege of this dance twice in less than a week. An oceanographer that was out to sea ( Michael Heinrich) and a Military guy in a neighboring State (Gomez Wilson) 1st one almost got me. The second one awoke this morning to a very rude email.

Thanks for sharing these stories .. I got the Ann Grove Flight attendant one for something I posted on Craigslist. (I thought it too good to be true when someone responds so quickly and wants to send me money) and not even see such a high ticket item!
Lesson Learned and RED FLAG when they don't seem to care too much about the item and more eager about the payment process!

Wow I got two or three like this and I never used PayPal before so I was a little concerned about being asked to use PayPal since I'm not familiar with their terms, conditions or charges.

After due consideration I declined on the first. After the third I was beginning to think I listed it in the wrong location.

I got a PayPal scam today same tactic by 2 different people...

Scammer #1:
"Thank you for getting back to me, Do you have the extra keys, Do you have the spare tire, Where did you get your car serviced, Have you ever had any transmission repairs and Is there any rust on the vehicle? I'm ready to pay your asking price but not cash in person because I am serving in the US army and currently been deploy to NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany and calls are restricted at the moment and my only quickest payment option is PayPal, its safe fast and secure and i will be responsible for the PayPal transaction charges so you can get your expected amount. If you don't have an account with PayPal, its pretty easy to open one, Just log onto www. paypal. com and sign up. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I have a mover that will come for the pick up once payment clears in your account and he will handle the title for me. I look forward to hear from you with the information below."

Beware, nearly got scammed on Done Deal via paypal. Offered me full asking price with no viewing of the dress. Sent me a paypal email with an extra €200 for postage. Conditions were I had to pay the first €200 for shipping of the item in western union first in Post office and then the rest of my asking price would go in to my paypal account! Haaaaa haaaa! Ya nearly got me...NOT!!! Hahahahahahahaha!

I was actually trying to buy a vehicle (located on Craigslist). Got this today:

Hi again, as I've told you, at this moment I am in Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, AK. I do a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or call whenever I want. The reason I'm selling this truck way below market value is because I don't have time for negotiations and I need money before August 17 for my next house in Anchorage. Before leaving I had pre-arranged the deal with eBay so my presence is not necessary. They can protect both buyer and seller and it's the right way to do this. The truck is already at our Traffic Management Office from Langley Air Force Base, VA, ready to go. eBay will handle this transaction and the total amount that you will pay is $2,500 (NO hidden or shipping fees). Once the payment is confirmed and secured by eBay, the shipping will be started. You will receive the truck at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery and then I will get the payment. SO...ONLY AFTER you receive the truck and agree to keep it, eBay will release the payment to me, in this way we are both protected. If by any reason you find something you don't like about it you can send it back on my expense but I'm sure it won't be the case because my truck is in excellent condition. It will come with all the necessary paperwork (clear title, bill of sale, manuals etc). You will receive all the original documents. I signed all the paperwork and the clear title is ready to be transferred to the new owner.
I need to know if you are still interested, so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If you are interested, please include in the next email your contact information for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can move forward with this transaction.
I attached some pictures to this email.
Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!

Uhhh... NO!I just sent it to spoof @ eBay.com (and flagged the post as spam).

I just got one. Marine awaiting deployment. Buying for his dad. (I'm selling a motorcycle he trusts me for condition, etc, etc, have you checked into paypal yet? sent a link I didn't use it! Glad.

Thanks for getting back to me,am at work and calls are not allowed that's why i am contacting u via email, whats the recent condition and also why u selling it,are u the original owner, how recent are the pics on ad? I'm ok with the price, I can only pay through PayPal at the moment due to my work and pickup agent is avail to come and pick it up after payment made, all i need is the email u use in setting it up and ur name so that i can make the payment and u will be notify by PayPal as soon as am done.arrangement for the picking follows as PayPal will update u on that after transaction completed.

Some ppl trying really hard. Too good to be true.
Contacted me literally minutes I have posted the add.
Watch the scammers. Don't waste your time.

This all sounds just like a communication I had today from a tommy jones who said he was at sea & wanted to pay for my car via pay pall , would pay all my fees & wanted to pick up my car on a low loader for his son it just sounded to good to be true , I gave him all my details including my address & PayPal details , I've now deleted my PayPal Account and feel reall worried about the whole thing

Selling my Harley on Craigslist. First text the guy was in the military and deployed. Scam all over that one. 2nd player..214-814-6454 says Paypal right away. I googled his number and the name Quincy Davis from TX came across. I asked if it was him and he says no. In my ad it says in person at bank only. These people don't read anything but the headline.

I received the text below from craigslist scammer "Roy Cryan"...

"Am presently in san luis obispo military base. I have a mover that will come for the pick up once the payment clears. I will be paying you through paypal that is the only means of payment here."

Thanks for this post. I got very similar email..not military though. Name Rhonda Nolan. Will be denying request.

Here's the one I got today for a bassoon I'm selling on Craigslist:

Thanks for your response. Please understand that I am not around for inspection due to the nature of my job, I serve in the U.S Army as a CAS(Civil Affairs Specialist (38B) currently on active duty and it's been quite busy on the field these days with lots of restrictions, strictly no calls for security reasons but we have secure access to the Internet as our major means of communication for now. I am OK with your asking price and if you don't mind, I can only pay through PayPal at the moment be cause its the most secure way to make or receive payment online this is why I'll prefer using PayPal to pay you, all I need is your PayPal email to make the payment and if you don't have a PayPal account, it's pretty easy to set up at www. paypal .com. I have a few questions for you.

Are you the original owner? How long have you owned it? Whats its condition, any damages and what is your reason for selling?

I hope you consider my offer. I am ready to buy. I'll arrange for pick up after you have confirmed and received payment. Thanks for understanding, hope to read from you soon.

Pretty great to know this is a scam before I went any further.

Just got this and he wanted my paypal account, was on the sign in page when I googled "paypal scam" and found this site:

My name is Campbell, previous i stationed at Norfolk Naval Shipyard before i was transferred to Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, CT. It's hard in the military when your time is not always your own. I do a special training program each day which I am not allowed to get out of the unit whenever I want that was the reason why i visit Craigslist to buy some of my SON needs. He contact me some couple of minutes ago regarding his needs and i'm %100 sure this works perfect for him. so i'm making this purchase for him as a surprise Gift and i'm sure he would be happy about it. How far are you to Blacksburg, Virginia? That's where he lives...

Firstly, Are you the first owner of it?
Secondly, Why are you selling it?
Thirdly What do i need to repair after making the purchase?
And lastly What is the final asking price??
