Selling your used stuff online has become commonplace. So have scams taking advantage of the good names of reputable online companies. At the FTC, we’ve heard from people stung by scammers spoofing PayPal. The scam generally goes like this: You post a high-value item, like a used car, for sale online. In no time at all, you get an email from a buyer willing to pay full price — or more! But he sets conditions; he is only willing to pay by PayPal or insists the sale must happen right away. What’s really going on? A ruse to steal your personal information, money or merchandise.

Here are some suspicious situations to look for and steps to safe selling online:

Scenario One: The buyer claims he can only pay via PayPal. Don’t have a PayPal account? No problem, he says. He’ll send you an email with a link so you can set one up.

What should you do? Don’t take the bait. The link will send you to a website masquerading as PayPal. Any information you enter will be collected by the bogus buyer, and may be used to commit fraud. If you need to set up an account, go directly to PayPal.com.

Scenario Two: “Check your email!” The buyer claims he has sent payment to your PayPal account with additional funds so you can ship the merchandise ASAP, but oops, he sent too much money. He asks you to return the extra money via a money wiring service. It’s all a lie, including the extra money the buyer says he included.

What should you do? Log into your PayPal account. Make sure you’ve been paid before you ship. Never follow links in emails from people you don’t know. The safest approach is to open a browser window, navigate to PayPal.com, and log in yourself. Also, if the buyer claims to have sent extra money, and asks for some back, that’s a big red flag.

Scenario Three: The buyer sends you real money through a real PayPal account, and you ship him the car. Problem is, the PayPal account belongs to someone else! You might need to return the money even though the scammer has your wheels.

What now? Contact PayPal and ask them to open an investigation. The company offers seller protections so you aren’t liable for unauthorized transactions. Also file a complaint with the FTC and your local police department.

Learn how to recognize and avoid common online scams. And contact PayPal at spoof@paypal.com if you’ve been stung by a PayPal spoof. The company wants to hear from you.

Yep, another "Roy Cryan" email from a craigslist ad here. I could tell it was fake, because they asked "I saw your ad on craigslist and it was lovely,i would like to know more about it tell me the condition.". Since I posted extensive images and described it, I knew they were trying to scam.

From: ANN VAN DER MERWE Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2018, 10:50 Subject: Re: Kx60 To: Thanks for the details, I think it's better i inform you about this. I received an email from my pick up agent am most sure i include that in my previous email, she said she won't come for the pick up unless i pay her the agent commission fee via Spar first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time, i would have love to pay them directly via Spar but there is no way i can pay online ! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the R2500 they charged to pick it up and take it my home(1st class treatment), to the payment i will sending into your PayPal account, so after i have made the payment I will need you to help me send the R2500 to my pick up agent through Spar.I will be sending total payment of R6,850 into your PayPal account ,which means R4,000 for the Item, while R2500 for the Pick-Up fee. I have also included the Spar charges which is R50 and extra R300 for the stress ok I will be making the payment if you agree to help with this. Thank you

Partner just had a scammer contact him about his car that literally just went up for sale. Said they could pay through PayPal ASAP and have a courier collect. As it didn't sound right... he gave him his number and asked him to call and chat to suss the person out and asked them where they lived as to why they couldn't come themselves. Ignoring the question about location, he responded that he was deaf and very ashamed to admit this and so on. However, my dad is deaf and in situations like this he would ask us to speak on his behalf, the seller/buyer would often be able to hear him shouting in the background.

Ha ha, I'm interacting with one of these time-wasting jokers right now. Offering more than I asked, to include shipping. Pushing to do it quick. Insisting on paypal. The kicker was the phrase "i don't have a meet up schedule" which sounded strange and not correct english, and now I see that exact phrase in one of the posts above this one. Thanks everyone for this very helpful forum! Note the name "Raymond Thorton". I wrote "Raymond" back saying he sounds like a scammer but if he's a real buy he won't be insulted but instead will be grateful I'm so careful with my money ... and my laptops.

Ugh, another one: I was trying to sell a car on Craigslist and this was the first e-mail they sent. Beware though, this one -first pretended to be someone else and texted me saying "hey, my friend at this email address wants to buy your car" presumably to get rid of the CL relay email -sent several full-fledged and functional FAKE Paypal emails -Even called me to hustle me for the money from a spoofed American number in Tennessee (though he was definitely Nigerian or something). Thanks for your response, I am sorry I am not available to view due to the nature of my job, I am in the United States Army and serve as a CBRN Specialist (74D). I want to buy this for my son birthday Gift. I am currently deployed wont be back till January . I am OK with your asking price and if you don't mind, I can only pay through PayPal at the moment because its the most secure way to make or receive payment online this is why I'll prefer using PayPal to pay you, all I need is your PayPal email to make the payment and if you don't have a PayPal account, its pretty easy to set up at www.paypal.com. I also have a few questions for you. Whats its condition, any damages? Are you the original owner and what is your reason for selling?and last asking price? I hope you consider my offer. I am ready to buy, so you can take the add off Craigslist. I'll have a courier person come for pick up and storage after I make payment and money is in your hand. Thanks for understanding, hope to read from you soon. The phone numbers they used were 1-901-842-0650 and 1-915-320-5891

In the last 2 days I received 3 of those Paypal scam emails and one that is the following:

"i like the bmw and i am sure that it is O K i am fine with the pr ice from your listing so i will go ahead get the funds from my l oan broker. i will have to come and see and also check the car. I -will bring also my mechanic with me, so he will see it too. i will be able to pay you cash after i will inspect the car. i am very serious and i deal only face to face with cash. Do you have all the service docs and the history of-the_car?"

This is close to the same wording I have received in a past car sale. I am not sure what the deal is with this one but anybody who says "I am very serious" and "I am okay with the price", just delete the email. I real buyer will test drive the vehicle and offer less than asking price. I wish there was a way to stop these morons because they are wasting our time.

I posted some furniture yesterday and within an hour I had 3 people contacting me with the same request. What condition is it in and they must pay now with paypal. I have spent 2 days having the time of my life playing stupid and stringing them along. Heck I even offered to transport the furniture to CO to some poor soul who could not leave his base post to do a money order or anything. I have messed with him since yesterday telling him he had committed and I had turned down several buyers because of his commitment. Told him I would deliver and then he could see it in person and pay in cash. Haven't heard back from him. I tell them I won't use PayPal because of their political views but that they can pay the full amount to the shipping agent and have them bring me the cash when they come to pick up the furniture. I do play very stupid and sweet as can be all the while messing with them endlessly. I think I have had about 6 so far. One even told me they only use paypal because they have been ripped off too many times by checks and money orders! That one was probably my favorite. Ya know if they are going to waste my time I am gonna waste theirs. It is too funny for sure. Do people really fall for stuff like this? Never mind they must or the scammers wouldn't have a need to exist! Stay diligent my friends!

I was actually trying to buy a vehicle (located on Craigslist). Got this today: Hi again, as I've told you, at this moment I am in Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, AK. I do a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or call whenever I want. The reason I'm selling this truck way below market value is because I don't have time for negotiations and I need money before August 17 for my next house in Anchorage. Before leaving I had pre-arranged the deal with eBay so my presence is not necessary. They can protect both buyer and seller and it's the right way to do this. The truck is already at our Traffic Management Office from Langley Air Force Base, VA, ready to go. eBay will handle this transaction and the total amount that you will pay is $2,500 (NO hidden or shipping fees). Once the payment is confirmed and secured by eBay, the shipping will be started. You will receive the truck at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery and then I will get the payment. SO...ONLY AFTER you receive the truck and agree to keep it, eBay will release the payment to me, in this way we are both protected. If by any reason you find something you don't like about it you can send it back on my expense but I'm sure it won't be the case because my truck is in excellent condition. It will come with all the necessary paperwork (clear title, bill of sale, manuals etc). You will receive all the original documents. I signed all the paperwork and the clear title is ready to be transferred to the new owner. I need to know if you are still interested, so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If you are interested, please include in the next email your contact information for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can move forward with this transaction. I attached some pictures to this email. Thanks, hope to do business with you soon! Uhhh... NO!I just sent it to spoof @ eBay.com (and flagged the post as spam).

This all sounds just like a communication I had today from a tommy jones who said he was at sea & wanted to pay for my car via pay pall , would pay all my fees & wanted to pick up my car on a low loader for his son it just sounded to good to be true , I gave him all my details including my address & PayPal details , I've now deleted my PayPal Account and feel reall worried about the whole thing
