Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Hi Im from Brazil and I received a msg from a scammer on a date site Mormon. I'm feeling so stupid reading everything here about these kind of people. He's name is Ben Garcia from Paramount, CA. He's very handsome and a marine. He is widow, his parents died when he was 3 years old and he doesnt have simbiliares. He is extremamely in love and always use words like: sweety, honey etc. He send me a lot of love poem. He asked to talk to me through email or an app called Kik messenger, I acepted. No problem. A few weeks after we were talking he said he needed to go to Dubai to make a top-secret mission and had life-threatening, then I was very suspicious! I began researching many things related to e-mail he sent me , actually two emails. After I googled the phrase he used in the dating site I found countless fakes profiles in various dating sites worldwide, with numerous photographs , both as a man and even woman. I chocked! I saw a facebook with the same description of him. When I asked for his facebook, he said "I dont have one, not everyone has a social networking" Im still waiting he asked me for money, but I thought: "I'll break his heart first!" This week I asked for some pics from Dubai, and he didnt send me. He ask me also to send a letter to he come back soon, and how I read a lot about it, thn he will ask me money, but when I received his msg asking me to send a letter to someone from marine, I said to him "be patiente, complete your mission and when you come back, we will talk about our future!" LOl hahahahaha Now I wanna play games, but Im so desapointed.. I really was feeling something about Ben Garcia, and now I know, he is a scammer :'( P.S.: Im sorry about my english, I dont speak very well.

Descreption from his profile: "I am a nobody , got nothing impressive to offer; not a prince charming nor a knight in shining armor. All i have and can give is my tender heart. Only hope and pray that it is enough to get me by in the game of love. I believe that love is a crime i.e an accomplice is needed to love; but not all are willing to commit the crime of love.As for me, I live to love, to experience the magical feeling that love gives, to give my heart , my soul , my everything. I long to live my life for something worhtwhile{ love } ; for it is like oxygen, the very essence of life. Much time is wasted on frivolity and trivialise and chasing after the wind and if there's one lesson i have learned in life, it is that u got to make d most of everything for life in itself is never ending and coming to love is what makes life eternal. Indeed , the greatest lesson is to love and be loved. So, i crave that, i want it, i desire it; if for just a moment, then my life wouldn't have been a waste Life is too short to be chained to an un loving heart and if there's little love anywhere on the planet, i can travel the length to seek and find it. I am young @ heart but puts no barrier to love. I only seek to find the one who appreciates the 'little' i have to give. So i keep hoping , as i know the best things in life either come too soon or too late{ i pray for soon though} but never @ the time we expect . I await love with love."

Twice now I've met guys through a dating site that wanted to communicate via email right away, and within a day or two, were madly in love with me. Called me all kinds of nicknames and seldom used my own name. Planning a bright future together. Both claimed to be widowed with a grown son, who worked with them in their construction business. Interestingly, they both got awarded a building contract in Egypt and had to go there for a month. While there, they were robbed and needed money right away, and wasn't I in love enough to send them $$? Fortunately, I listened to my gut and ran.

Your name, email address and photos are the kind of information that is often available already on online directories or social media sites or group emails that you sign up for. If you responded to a scammer, you might get more emails from other scammers.

I met a man on a dating site a couple years ago , This one is good , because I actually met him twice in person , of course his Nigerian , living in Malaysia , after meeting him I thought something was odd as he bought baby shoes apparently for his friends child but he also had a tattoo of baby footprints on his arm . He often asked for money apparently for his business , which he travelled abroad for regularly. I sent him money and if I didn't he got angry , calling me constantly , yelling and screaming down the phone . It was around a year later I got a call from another woman who had been contacted by another woman who it seems we all were in relationships with the same man . There is probably so many more out there, each one sending him money. So I decided to do some searching and oh boy did I find this man everywhere , so many aliases. And he does have a wife back in Nigeria that visits him often most likely at all our expense . This man needs to be stopped as he is always willing to meet his bevy of women as long as they pay for everything including for him. His wife is a so called recording artist in Nigeria who would need money to fund her career , which he scams out of women.

Hi attention to everyone, I want to share my experience to all of you after read all above comments.I received friend request from him in face book on early of December'15, one of my closed friend is mutual friend with him.So, I decided to accept him name with " Ivan Dennis "work at Maxis Construction(UK)as Civil Engineer and he also live in London,UK. His profile is the best as like Gentleman. After one week, he gave to me his mobile number from UK and told me to add in Whatsapp. His number is 00447709148184. After that, we had chat at Whatsapp. He talk with me so smooth and gentle and also kindly. And second week of January'16, suddenly he told me that he had awarded from his company for a new contract and have to leave to Spain. So, he will go shopping to buy something and also want to buy something for me. He asked to me my real name, my phone number and address to send the gift. I reply to him it is nothing to send for me. I do not accept such kind of present from the stranger. After next day , he sent to me the picture of gifts ( such as Iphone, Apple Notebook, bag etc..). I do not really want to accept this. And one more is he said had put money inside the box since he could not reach to call my phone for my bank account number. The money amount is 20,000 Pounds. At this time , he show me all the package and waiting my address. So, I asked him his address from London and he gave me address from London. This moment, I had trust him and I sent my company address to him. After next day , he sent to me Air Will Bill with ' GIBRALTAR SECURITY EXPRESS " will arrive to my place within 3 days. After2 days, one girl called to me with Vietnam phone number and parcel is at Vietnam but need to pay delivery charges. She called me so many time to send money $1500.At first ,I refused to pay but the guy tell me to pay and he also will come to my country to meet me. Finally, I made a stupid thing and transfer money to May Bank Account. If I know about the scammer, will not happen this trouble. Now, I already blocked to him but lost my money. This is so suffer for me and regret why I trust this kind of people. I do not really know people will do such kind of habit. This is the big lesson for me in my life. Anyway, even I lost money, I hope this message will save to someone as well. Now , I am feeling myself so stupid woman. Be careful, this number is still active on Viber and Wechat.

It is despicable to me that people take advantage of others people feeling for the sole purpose to scam them out of money. It amazes me that this happens to begin with. I hope that people who are attempting to do this are caught and fast because this type of scam can not only do economic damage to the victims but also extreme emotional damage. I am extremely sorry for anyone who has been through this and I hope that it is put to an end very soon.

Any of you have been texting with a guy named Godson Townsend, also a chief engineer with Shell Co. His wife died of cancer and has a son. He was on an oil rig that needed me to send money to someone in Ghana because his son at this boarding school was in an accident and needs to pay the hospital? Then he made a mistake and showed the same pictures of a guy named Ron Macom in Fairbanks. He still texts me for money. Now he needs money to buy a truck. He shaves his head, blue eyes and wears a earring. When I tried to befriend Ron Macom he blocked me. Never sent him money and always calls me his Queen...

You're story of the scamming engineer hit home for me. I received a friend request on Facebook from my guy. He was supposedly an engineer who lived about 5 hours away from me. He was so nervous about the prospect of landing a big engineering job in New Delhi and miraculously he got the contract. Within 2 days of landing in New Delhi he was mugged. He was beaten up and a briefcase containing $2300 was stolen. His wallet and credit cards were also stolen so obviously he was forced to freeze his accounts. If only I could wire him the $2300 by Western Union he could complete the job and return so we could start a life together. He would absolutely pay me the money back within a week and he will transfer additional funds to my account from his so I could send them to him as needed. I needed to trust in him (according to him) because all relationships must be built on trust and truth. ****all of this took place within a 10 day period from the time I first spoke to him until the day I blocked him on everything

Looking to find out if a Robert Warfel has been heard of by anyone reading this blog. Within a few months I was bitten by the Love Bug and been proposed to by this man. He says he wants to marry me. He's in the army. He's unable to get out at this time, but his General says it will cost us both money, but he can make it happen. He's told me his money is frozen. He makes $90,000 a year. It hit me when he said he could use $200 to throw his men a beer party! He never gave me his military email address. His Facebook account is minimal. He says he doesn't have the time to fix it up. Things feel sketchy!

The US Army warns people about scammers who pretend to be members of the military. The Army says:

  • Military members have an email address that end in ".mil." If the person you are speaking with cannot sent you at least one email from a ".mil" (that will be the very LAST part of the address and nothing after), then there is a high probability they are not in the military.
  • The scams often involve romantic requests for money to buy special laptop computers, international telephones, military leave papers, or pay transportation fees for the fake "deployed Soldier."
  • Some scammers even ask victims for money to buy "leave papers" from the Army, help pay for medical expenses or help pay for their flight home.

I also just ran into this scanner girl named Jessica Hurst on facebook, the messed up part is I contacted her first because she was shooting a 50 cal rifle and I commented on it, plus she was hot, anyways we started talking on text then her phone broke so we had to talk just on facebook , she then said she loved me and wanted 300 for a plane ticket to fly to Seattle from Miami, so I was pretty suspicious but still unsure, then she starts saying that she is a fashion designer and might get a contract in Nigeria or Malaysia, then she said she had an inheritance and if her lawyer could deposit the money in my account, at this time I new it was a scam and got pretty rude and nasty, it ended with her blocking me and calling me crazy lol

I am talking to some right now I met off of OKCUPID. Some things set off red flags but not all, so I am unsure. He sent me photos, some of which were used in scamming I just found out but.... He calls me by name(he does use sweetheart, baby etc too), he texts me daily several times per day. We talk anywhere from 1/2 hour to 2 and 1/2 hours just this morning. I get long emails every few days. Some parts are copied and it's obvious but mostly they are very personal. I told him right off that I have no money,I own no property, don't use credit cards etc... (truth) but he continues to talk to me. Why would he bother. He has not asked for any money but has talked about finances. He did send me photos that were used in scams (just found out) and under false names, but he sent me one photo that looks recent and is not in any database. I have not talked to him by phone yet nor will I ever send money. I am very confused as to what to do. Please help! These are the names associated with the stolen photos: Jeffran Suarez Aug.7 2015 and June 29 2010; Richard Dickson; Ryan Cort; George Cohen; Jones Williams; James Morgan; Kenny Johnson;James Hughes; Christopher Bannerman; Antonio Salvado (3/16/14); Phone# in association with names..... 628-593-3087; 682-593-3087 (yes both similar numbers. Not mistake) and 917-765-0875 He is using different numbers, photos and name with me. He has used Greek oracle in the false profiles. Not now though. He does text like foreigner but says originally from Germany so that would be understandable. Would welcome any comments. ...

If someone you met online, and never met in person, asks you to open a new bank account that is a warning sign.  That online love interest might be a fake.

If you open a bank account for someone you met online, and give them the account information, they could use the account for fraud. A scammer could deposit a bad check in the account and quickly take out the money before the bank learns the check is fake. When the bank finds out the check is fake, you will have to repay the money, because it's your account.

Or, the scammer could deposit a bad check and ask you to take out the money and send it by wire transfer. When the bank finds out the check is no good, you will have to repay the money, because it's your account.

Has anyone come across a man claiming to originally be from Milan, moved to San Francisco 18 years ago. Wife died 6.5 years ago in car accident. His son (Lucio) who is 14 lives in Ohio with his sister and her family. He claims to be a gemologist/miner. Was working in Oxford and now Wales at the Bog. One of his workers damaged his rented tool and now he has to raise enough money to get it repaired. I found him on OK Cupid. Very sweet, romantic. Talks about smiles, twinkling eyes and walks holding hands. Says he is vegan, family man, loves to cook, dance and travel. He only lightly asked me for money and when I said I could not the communication slowed way down. Luckily I have not sent any money, only emotional damage. It's so hard when you think its real and its not. Now it's just a game. I asked for address etc and he gave me something but who knows. My tech friend did a search for the photos provided and found nothing anywhere which was hard as it made me think he might be real. I have spoken on phone many times and he is definitely Italian. Anyone else been involved with him? or someone that might be him with a similar story? name: Alexander Lucio Rossi (goes by Alex) DOB: 2/16/68, email: phone numbers:on viber) and in US, address 2145 Green Street, SF 94123 (but no record of him owning there) went by hrtheals profile name in OK Cupid and said UK. has bright green eyes and is very good looking. wears sunglasses in most pictures. Update from yesterday's comment, after seeing the above comments about man from Milan I alerted my friend. She immediately realized she was being scammed. Luckily it hadn't gotten anywhere yet - meaning he hadn't gotten around to asking her for money yet. His name was Russell David originally from Milan (although how Russell David is an Italian name is beyond me), wife and son died in a car accident 8 years ago. I have her phone number his phone number another phone number I called day b4 yesterday and a girl answered and that was supposed to be the attorney also, but I called from a different phone number. she didn't know the attorney. I have the name account and all for the deposit to be made. I have sent her money before. this is a gold deal from Ghana, but they supposed to be in new York now. 985 is there someway to chase down these phone numbers and find out if they lagit or prosecute them if not. I have enough to catch them up and will have enough evidence for a conviction if they are scammers. contact me soon at the number above in letter asap. thanks!

Does anyone know why people in Canada are setting up dating profiles with other people's email addresses? This happened to me yesterday..

Hi CA310: I know this question goes back to 2/16 but I am Canadian and I have someone in England using MY email address that I opened when Hotmail first started. We happen to have same last name but not related. Her first name starts with an L while mine is J. I am 70 she is in mid 20's I think. I get at least 3 or 4 emails a week that are for her - wedding venues, airline comfirmations, delivery information etc. How she came to give my email address out everywhere I have no idea. So it is more than Canada using U.S. it can happen to anyone I believe.

I also had someone attempt to scam me. I think I had my guard up from the beginning. His name was Kevin and he was from California. He was a widower with a grade school daughter. We communicated online and by text for about two months. It didn't feel right. He was always on a business trip, while his sister took care of the child. He wanted to know where I worked, my kids names, where they went to to school. I never gave up any of that info. Then all of a sudden, he was away on a business trip and he got robbed...instant red alert. Next day I got the "honey, I need your help" text. He asked for money for a plane ticket home from Europe. I immediately text back with exactly what of him, a sit was harsh. He told me, he was offended and that if I didn't want to help him I could just say so, I didn't have to be rude. I was so ticked...here is a business man, homeowner, on a business trip and he has to ask a woman he's never met for money and I'm the bad guy!!!!! I told him off, told him that my police officer nephew wanted to know where he could send the money...and never heard from him again. Keep your guard up people. If it sounds to good to be true, it is! Don't give money to anyone!
