How to spot a car wrap scam

Have you seen ads promising easy money if you shrink-wrap your car — with ads for brands like Monster Energy, Red Bull, or Pepsi? The “company” behind the ads says all you have to do is deposit a check, use part of it to pay a specified shrink-wrap vendor, and drive around like you normally would. But don’t jump onto the bandwagon. It’s only easy money for the scammer who placed the ads.

How you spot the “offer”

You might see an ad on a job board or on social media. Or someone might send you a message — maybe because they saw your profile or resume on a job site.

How the scam works

The message says you’ll make a couple hundred bucks. But when the “company” sends you a check, it’s for much more than that — a couple thousand dollars. They tell you to deposit the check, keep part of it as your share, and wire the rest to another company that will wrap your car.

Weeks after you wire the money, the check bounces and your bank tells you it was a fake. The money you kept as “your share” disappears, and the money you wired is long gone — no getting it back. On top of that, you’re on the hook for paying your bank back for the fake check. And, of course, no one’s wrapping your car.

How you can tell it’s a scam

If you get a message urging you to deposit a check and wire money back, it’s a scam. Every time. No matter the story. And if this were a legitimate car wrap opportunity, wouldn’t the company directly pay the car-wrapping vendor, instead of asking you to do it?

Just got a text message entailing two links and an image of text on a screen. It was about a 500 dollar a week job with Blue Bell Ice cream , putting a vinyl decal sticker on my car, I did not see a mention of a check but they said money would be sent after a week after getting my information. The email that sent me this text message was this person: adreaw22@

I went ahead and deleted the message and blocked that contact, it’s not worth anyone time. It’s a scam and everyone’s accounts here confirms my suspicions.

I’ve been scammed at least 8 times since February 2020 . I literally have close to $20000.00 in fraudulent checks that were either fedex to me overnight or by USPS overnight . All of which suggesting the same scenario . Deposit a check of substantial amount , keep a small portion of check for myself and the rest to a car wrap company. Every time the check is denied by my banks. Beware ! All of It is a waste of time and effort for you . False hope put in a completely nameless con and your the one that suffers the consequences if , God forbid , a deposit actually gets accepted by your institution. Only paper trail to follow is your own . Victimized and named the culprit. Shame on the scammers for preying on an unemployed individuals desperate attempts for an income in this pandemic plagued nation of ours. All hope is gone here for me I give

I was contacted by text. Today a check for $2920 was on my porch. In a USPS mailer, I found that suspicious, because my mail is being forwarded. I was going to ask the bank to verify it, but now I will toss it in the trash.

My wife was sent one of these checks, I told her it was a scam, not to deposit it. She has now received a text from the guy, threatening that she has a check, and if she doesn't do anything he will get an attorney involved. I replied that we know it's a scam, my wife is going to show this treat to the sheriff.

I took a copy of the check to keep on my cell phone and gave the check to the police.

Just received my check today for $3970. The minute I saw cash and send, I knew it was a scam. Beware!!!!

Has anyone dealt with a guy supposedly named "David Huffman" about wrapping your car for Renata Batteries? I am due to receive a check from them shortly. I have no intention of cashing it but curious to know how nasty they will get. They have my address.

I got a message via text for RIPIT ENERGY DRINKS sent me a check for 1,350.00 I wanted to see if the check was real so I called the bank on the check. And went to my bank for answers. I had to send this Gail Moody a text because she was rushing me to deposit the check.THEY sent the check via FedEx. Needless to say I got all involved that needed to be involved. So call the bank on the check it has to have an account number on the check . I GOOGLED the bank information. Talked to the lady at the bank, she called the account holder. Be a scam alerter Get all involved that needs to be involved even the police. I Know you don't want to end up paying back money that you don't have. Happy scamming for SCAMS.

I received a check for 3,550 for baskin robbins to wrap my truck for Seneca foods . The person who had the name Intagliata Kent. He said he represented Seneca foods . Like the others said I got to keep 600.00 dollars for my truck . The rest went to the person wrapping the truck. And yes use wal mart for cashing the check . Want me to send this person my full name, check number , amount of the check txt to781 361 9336. Said We require you to send this info . Huh ,,,,, I'm not crazy like some folks . I'm gonna run this check through the shredder. Heck with them . When I said I'm reporting then to Seneca Foods I heard no more. Signed,,,,,,,,,, The DirtyBird.

This has happened, no joke, 3 times! About 5 minutes ago being the most recent. However I have not received any checks or anything, luckily. Knew it was too good to be true. One for Burger King another for Redbull and today it was Bang energy drink. People will try just about anything these days. Im wondering if and how often the scammers are caught?.... clearly not often enough
