Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

(201) 462-1781: Not safe. Scam! Robo-voice says there has been suspicious activity using your "social" (presumably Social Security number). This number, not connected in any way with the Social Security Administration, is the number robo-voice says to call regarding the issue. UNSAFE.

Just received a robo call voice message with this following message but the first part was cut off..."...your Social Security number for criminal activities so when you get this message kindly call our number 210-361- 1576 before we begin with the legal proceedings...". I called back on a different phone and a man with a foreign accent answered and said he was Officer ---- from the SS Office. I hung up because I suspected that it was a scam.

Receive numerous calls daily. Just received from North Richland Hills, TX 682-214-7989 and earlier today from Brookfield, IL 708-680-6902 Officer Kelly Jones and my social has been reported for illegal activity. If any way to put a stop to this, or what is the best way to have these stop? Do I call back and tell them I will report them?

I have been receiving calls twice a day from various phone numbers, one of which is identical to the one you listed for Brookfield IL 708-680-6902 . They all leave the same robotic voicemail, I don't pick up any of the calls. I am blocking the numbers but they they call with a new number. Super annoying

We received a call at 5:44 AM this morning, woken up from a sound sleep to a robotic drone voice telling us that "legal action has been filed due to social security fraud" and to call 830-268-4675. Well, last time I checked the Social Security Administration isn't in Pleasanton, TX... Needless to say these robocallers are getting WAY out of hand. I have NO intention of calling some weird number in Texas back that calls me at 5:44 in the AM with a non-human robot voice claiming that there is Social Security fraud, but doesn't say which one of the multiple people living in this house has the issue. That's got scam written all over it.

I received a call from 1-800-777-2540 claiming that my SSN is being suspended. I was put through to someone and this person asked for the last four digits of my social security number of which I refused and demanded way I was being contacted and I asked them if this is a scam. Immediately they muted my call and I hung out. The individual whom I spoke with has an Indian accent. I also heard other voices in the background from this apparent fake call center from overseas - most likely from India since I also heard Indian accents.

1/30/2019 got a call from 1-800-772-1813, which is one number off from real SSA number. It showed as Toll Free Caller, I did not answer. I have voice to text. A message was left by automated call saying the SSA Legal Department was suing me and an arrest warrant on me released due to legal enforcement actions filed on my SSAN for fraudulent activities. Press 1 for info. When I called the number of course it doesnt ring. Highly unlikely SSA would tip you off about an arrest warrant. I would like to verify with SSA there is no problem just in case. Wait time 1 hour. Guess I will have to go to an SSA and check.

I received a call on my cell and received a voicemail on 1/30/19 at 12:41 PM. The message was a male computerized voice (English speaking). The message stated that it was a call from the department of Social Security Administration and the department was calling to inform me that my social security number had been “suspend” because of “some suspicious activity.” The call further stated, “so if you want to know about this case, just press 1, thank you.” The message was approximately 20 seconds long. The number that called me was 1-800-772-9145. I blocked the number and reported the incident.

I received the following call (it went to voicemail as I didn't answer it) on my cell phone at 9:59am on 1/31/19 with the following recording: "This call is from the Department of Social Security Administration." "The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your social security number because we found some suspicious activity." "So if want to know about this case, just press 1. thank you." The number that call came from was 1-800-772-9148. Another scam. Gotta love the obvious incorrect grammar used "that we just SUSPEND your social security...." I'll report this in an effort to help.

I got pretty much the same call. Caller ID said Chicago, IL and I do have work counterparts there, so I answered it. The call was a robotic recording, that identified itself as calling from the department of Social Security Administration. It instructed me to call back. Bothe the caller ID and the call back number provided were the same; (773) 649-1565. Many of us are informed but I get very worried about older people, immigrants and english second language speakers who might not know to look out for scammers and actually give their protected information away. More needs to be done to inform everyone of these idiotic yet dangerous scammers. =\

Have been receiving calls from 410 734 2483 telling me my card has been suspended to due to suspicious activity. I am directed to call that number. I did (knowing not to give out info) and wass asked for my SS number I told them fine all I need from them was my "secret code" that I set up with SS and I would provide it. They promptly hung up. Got this call 10 times in one day and 3 times already today. I reported it to our sheriffs office but it appears they have not acted in any way on my report.
