Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

So where are the Federal Government agents who should be tracking down Social Security Fraud? Where is the telephone company who sells them robo-dialing numbers? Time for someone with teeth to get on this problem. I suspect they are all looking the other way.

The number is slightly changed to 866-772-1213, pretending to be an officer calling from social security, as someone is fraudulently using your social security # and press 1 to talk to an officer. This was a robot call. When called back, it was told that there was no such number. Clearly the Scam artists are active again to make enough dough to flee to tropis for the winter.

I just received a ph call today from ‭+1 (855) 285-6010‬ and they claimed that my ss# was being cancelled and to please press 1 for English. I hung up and when I called back to see who answered, the 1st time the recorder said it was the US Social Security office. I thought that was strange because the recorder said “office” & not “administration”. I hung up and tried again, this time the recorder said it was the Key West Social Security office. Beware of scams, there is always something strange with their phrasing.

I was called by a man who introduced himself as Henry Wilson who gave me his agent number 105962 to prove his "identity" as a Social Security Admin Department official. He said that my SS was used in South Texas in a fraud and that he would read to me the case details after I give him my social security number to confirm my identity (!). I questioned his honesty and after a few additional statements from him to convince me he was legitimate I finally hang up and reported the fraud on line on the website: oig.ssa.gov

Call #. 602-529-3515. Phoenix, Arizona 11:02 am Said my SS has been stopped due to information they have received. Need my bank Routing and account # immediately. If I did not proceed immediately I would lose all benefits permanently. I received my first SS deposit on Oct 23rd. My calls immediately started using my non published cell number. 3 days 3 calls. Does the Federal government sale or release information of SS benefactors to others? How would they have my name, cell #, and date of first deposit.
