Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Just received a call claiming from SSA officer Ryan Smith about a legal enforcement action filed on my SSN for criminal activities. I didn't pick up and it went to my voice message. It seems like I don't need to call back because it totally looks like scam. The number is 833-696-6552.

Recently I have received several calls from different locations in Texas regarding what they "say" is a problem with my social security number and that it has been suspended due to some kind of fraudulent activities. I don't believe it! Why would a Social Security office in Texas contact me when I live close to a social security facility near Waynedale, Ft. Wayne Indiana

Got a call on my cell phone this morning. Robotic voice saying there had been fraud detected with use of my SS# and to please call immediately. I did not use my cell, I used a land line. Spoke with someone (MAJOR accent) saying they have noticed fraudulent use of my SS# and that is has been reported to 'my local police department'. He then asked to verify my social. I told him -' you have the report, you tell me my social.' He then hung up...lol

I received a scam call from the following number 1-312-847-9820. They left a recording suggesting that my Social Security number was going to be permanently blocked I still have the message if necessary. I tried calling the 1-800-269-2071 number however the automated system was terrible and I could not get through to anyone; it just was sending me to websites instead of human beings.

I received a call from someone claiming to be from social security, They told my number was being compromised; and social security would be suspending my number. And I would not have access to anything, including my bank account or anything associated with my number. They told me my number was used to open 15 different banking accounts, involved in fraud, drugs, money laundering, and if I don’t help them to resolve this I could go to jail and I would be contacted by the police department shortly.

A call came in from (443) 707-3382 like a robocall stating it was the ssa and I needed to go before a magistrate and to call back immediately. I called and spoke with an officer Andrew Canalsa. First he didn't have my file then he did. With the wrong name. Then he asked for my ss#. I told him I would confirm the social he had when he gave it to me. He began to threathen me and he got frustrated. He placed me on hold then hung up. I cslled back and not going through at all.

I received 2 phone calls today from the ssa (855)323-6185 and (855) 368-8247 stating my ss# and all my benefits would be suspended unless I spoke with someone from the ssa. My phone only receives calls from my contacts, so they don't go through. I wish I could hunt these scumbags down and teach them not to mess with people in this manner! I work hard and don't appreciate being deceived by some phony loser who lacks respect!

We have been getting daily calls for the past week from random numbers with automated voice telling you to call 516-224-7892 claiming that they are from the SSA and your SS# has been suspended due to fraudulent activity. When I begin to question them on how they know this has happened, they hang up. I call back and ask to give me the local address to come into the office they hang up.

I have been bombed with the car warranty scam for weeks. These SSA calls just started this week. Thankfully I am fully aware of these horrible scams. I like to play with them for a bit, then I tell them I am reporting them to the OIG, FTC and SSA. Then they simply hang up. Cheap entertainment for me, however I know there are people that fall for these scams. People need to make sure elderly and young know how to handle these calls.
