Your Social Security number isn’t suspended. Ever.

A caller says that he’s from the government and your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended. He sounds very professional. So you should do exactly what he says to fix things…right?

Wrong.

The FTC has gotten reports about scammers trying to trick people out of their personal information by telling them that they need to “reactivate” their supposedly “suspended” SSNs. The scammers say the SSN was suspended because of some connection to fraud or other criminal activity. They say to call a number to clear it up – where they’ll ask you for personal information.

Thing is, Social Security numbers do not get suspended. This is just a variation of a government imposter scam that’s after your SSN, bank account number, or other personal information. In this variation of the scheme, the caller pretends to be protecting you from a scam while he’s trying to lure you into one.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  • Never give out or confirm personal information over the phone, via email or on a website until you’ve checked out whoever is asking you for it.
  • Do not trust a name, phone number, or email address just because it seems to be connected with the government. Con artists use official-sounding names and may fake caller ID or email address information to make you trust them. Besides, the government normally contacts people by postal mail.
  • Contact government agencies directly, using telephone numbers and website addresses you know to be legitimate.

If someone has tried to steal your personal information by pretending to be from the government, report it to the FTC.

The number is 18007477752, I had been called 2 times before today, and it was the same number, but no message had been left.

yep, I had one of these in my voicemail yesterday. Wish I had answered, I love playing with these fools. If I have a call with a number I don't recognize I answer "Department of Homeland Security, how can I direct your call" LOL

I received a voicemail saying my SSN will be suspended, call came in from 800-996-4057, tried to call them back and tell them my SS# is 999-99-NEVERMIND however the number is now disconnected.

Been getting calls from this number several times per day: 518-418-5599. Call from Lake Placid, NY. It is definitely a robo-call identifying themselves as the “Inspector” of the Social Security Office letting me know my ss# is suspended. I am to call back and give them information.

Got a phone call, wasn't near the phone but a message was left. Automated voice with 1st half of what it said cut off. Said "we have got an order to suspend your social at very right moment due to suspicions activity" then instructed me to call the number back. The number used, probably spoofed, 3106843816.

Got a call today from a number out of Indiana. Same message as what everyone else listed, good thing I can drive on a "suspended" social security! Lol

I was told that I had been called numerous times and this was my last chance to return this call(which I answered) saying that my Social Security has been shut down, and they hung up!

They called from Issaquah, WA
Phone 425-395-8422

Getting calls from 234 357 XXXX and 234 355 XXXX SS is suspended

This # 908-970-9827 Oldwick New Jersey is what called me. No name just number and location. If that’s even it. Plus a recording!! These people need to get a real job.

I just got this robocall from 806-553-6511 - what a stupid scam. Just wanted to put this number out there because unlike some of the others, if you call it, it is a call center claiming to be the SSA.

I received a call today from (281) 656-1247 on this scam claiming my social security number has been blocked and reported in a criminal activity. Just want to make you aware that these scam calls are still pervasive.

I received 4 calls today stating my social security had been suspended. I knew better and hung up. Two different numbers 866-404-3898 and 866-404-4587. Very annoying.

I just received a call from
1-877-553-6912
It was an electronic voice saying it was social security administration
And my card/ account was suspended due to fraudulent or suspicious activity.
I know better than to answer, but I'm concerned about mainly the elderly who are unaware of these things happening.

Everyone should know that US Govt officals will never EVER call you! This is a prime example as to why they never do. If the Govt wants to contact you it will ALWAYS be via mail with a number for you to contact them. I feel terrible for the ppl that fall for these scams.

Just received a voice mail from 936-253-6089 (Liberty, TX). The first part of the message was cut off, but what was there said, "we proceed further with the suspension of your social and assets. Please press 1 to speak to the officer right away." It was an automated voice, not a real person.

Phone number 929-266-5465 left multiple messages stating my SS# was suspended and to call them immediately

I just got one of those calls saying my SSN was suspended (automated robot call). Then they said to find out more press 1, which connects you to the caller. The first thing they ask is to confirm your name. I got suspicious so I said I will call them back. then I went to check and its a known scam. The fraud call came from (760) 878 - 5020.

When is the government will stop those scammers. All this is because we moved our credit cards customer service abroad and they’re selling our information to scammers. We do not need a wall we need a great firewall to protect our identities.

332-255-6358, voicemail stating 'there is an order to suspend my ssn because of fraudulent activity' don't call back people!

Mine came from Texas: (409)420-3382

I've been getting calls and voicemails from multiple numbers....i just delete them. It is getting very annoying, how do we stop it

Hi my husband got the same call several times yesterday and he is going direct tot he office. If this is happening confirm your credit as well is my suggestion. I got my identity taken recently and currently have started that process as well.

Funny.. the robocall sounded interestingly authentic so I pressed to speak to someone.. I get a lot of wrong number calls.. the heavy accented fellow discerned quickly I wasn't to be toyed with and actually hung up on me lol..I told him "you called me" and I asked him "what name and number are you calling for"... click lol

My question concerns the son of a friend who just got out of prison where he has been for the past 28 years, going in at about 15. He tried to get his social security card, but is told the number he has is invalid. He can't get a Texas drivers license without the social security card. The title above suggests the card number is never retired. The Social Security has not been able to resolve the issue. What do we need to do to get him either the correct card or a replacement card?

Please talk with people at the Social Security Administration about this. The FTC doesn't have information about getting replacement Social Security cards.

Social Security has information online about replacing a lost card. That page tells you what documents you need to get a card. The National Reentry Resource Center has information about organizations that help people who were incarcerated.

Also watch out for this number 866 404 2496. I'm getting numerous calls about my ss number getting suspended.

Got the robot call and voicemail twice from +1(877)253-4712 . And same call from +(409)330-8255 Orange ,TX . SS card suspended due to suspicious activity .

Why can't this be tracked down and stopped? Why is this criminal activity allowed to affect all of us?? What is our government doing about this besides posting articles about it???

1-332-877-8376 ...This call is from the Department of the Social Security Administration....we just suspend your social security number... just press one --- got this on voicemail

I got one of those robot ones. Funny thing is, yes you can make a real number through Skype subscriptions. I only have that phone number simply because people at my grandparents don’t use technology. I live all the way in Germany, but the Skype number is US based. I knew that thing was a scam. It was a robot telling me that my number was suspended due to a criminal activity and that if I don’t respond or call back, I am due to be presented in front of a court magistrate. Yeah OK. Find something better to do with your time. I just block the number afterwords. I did report it on one of those.gov website’s.

Just got 4 calls same message when i called back said it was disconnected. 800-772-1212, 800-772-4855, 800-772-9956

I got the same call and I let it go to voicemail # is 6(464) 093- 7779 .

I just got the 'your SSN is frozen' scam robocall. I did press 1 and spoke to 'George Benneton', badge number SC9654 working in Austin, TX. I told him I would call the Austin Social Security office and then hung up. With all the money we spend on law enforcement and defense, I don't understand why we can't identify these crooks and prosecute.
