This is what a Social Security scam sounds like

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at

I have filed a complaint with the FTC back in June or July that I was scammed out of $26,000 and 4000 on my credit card but now I have heard nothing yet I don't know whether or not I will get a reply back or any of my money back and they were talking about win money at that time now I'm getting calls from people that says Facebook Lottery they tried to pull the same stunt as they did to me back in May and of course I lost all that money because having just lost my husband I thought I was doing something good for my children but I was being scammed not by one person but by 5 I want to know why no one has helped me or has found out anything I had given the FTC all the information and no one has replied back thank you sincerely Sheila G Gomez

This is another scam. The government paying people that are supposed to be helping people. They don't do anything such as Consumer Protection. They too should be reported. They can clearly see you're being beaten out of your money, but wont lift a finger to help against fradulent businesses . Our tax dollars should not go to support these agencies. Write or call your congressman and demand to know why these government agencies aren't doing the job we pay them to do?

lovly” you are 100 percent wrong. FTC is helping - trying to stop these calls.

we can find a man in a cave half way across the world, but we can't find out who is making these scam calls?

Round Rock, Texas 5/13/19 I got a call from 1 (800)185-1220 they told me that my social security number was being investigated asked me for my address and the last four of my social security he sounded like he was from India but I can be wrong. When I called back the phone was disconnected. It is a scam. Don't give anyone any information about your self over the phone.

5/13/19. Got a call from a Maryland number. Same thing telling me my ssn is being investigated and to call back before legal action is taken. What a world we live in.

I just got a call from MD 410-226-3059
Saying my SS# was compromised and asked to return the call to discuss the case with SS Investigating Officer.

Fortunately, my RoboKiller app blocked the call and kept the recording for me to hear. They called twice within one hour. BE CAREFUL!

Ne .. what is the name of the RoboKiller app. Obviously we all need it!
My call came from a Compton, CA number 310~361~1004. Said they were calling from the "Legal Department of Social Security Administration"... said my SS# has been suspended & they filed a case under my name. Before the matter goes to Federal Claim Court house for me to get arrested, to press '1' "
This all went to my voice mail. NOT COOL MAN!!

I received a call telling me social security is reviewing my case and call social security officers. I don't have caller ID . This is horrible.

What happenned after ?? My dad just revieved that call.

I got the exact same call on my voicemail just now.. ridiculous.

goodness.i just this very day got an identical call as this one.
i hung up and it went to voicemail, recorded the whole thing.
crazy people.not cool indeed! a roller coaster ride until i found this to read so thank you for posting your message!

I got the same call today too! But the # is 510-112-7281. Called every hour since 10am because I didn't answer. Each time I only got the end of the automated message. So I finally picked up the last call at 2pm and it said to press 1 as well but the call ends immediately after saying press 1. Not cool for sure. Now gonna have to put up a fraud alert.

Same exact number called me. I pushed one. Connected to someone with an accent, couldn't understand what he was saying so hung up. I hope I'm okay.

What happens if you hit "2"

They asked me to call back at (206)231-6022 after calling from a (401) number, and proceed to call me back 3x w/o leaving a voicemail. They had my full name and home addess, very disturbing

T he past 2 days I have been getting calls from a Washington DC number saying basically the same thing. The call a few minutes ago left a transcribed message on phone. When I call back, I get a busy signal.

Same! I got 3 robot calls from different numbers from Washington DC saying my ssn is being used in Texas and to press 1 to speak to officer Amanda Barnes.

I got the same phone call today 5/20/19. From 4106094664. Said the same words, my ssn was being investigated and to call before legal action is taken. It was a recording and said to call the number back.

I just had a call from the same number, a scam

I got the same call today on 5/22/2019. Twice. Once from Ohio and the other from Kansas. It has me all kinds of spooked.

I just got a call 5/21/2019 from (410)609-4664, from an automated robot saying something similar. I pressed 1 for more information, was routed to a man with an asian accent, who had my first, middle and last names, with my address. He said his name was Eric Willson, with an SSM### account for my record keeping. I hung up, they tried callin me back 3 times from (410)4067798 with no voicemail.

Just got the same call today.

I got calls from California 310-601-8320 Monday; Waco, Texas today 254-307-7533; and Indiana 812-269-1038 all stating "Kindly call back to us at the earliest possible before we begin the legal proceedings on our number 812-269-1038 I repeat 812-269-1038 thank you" I called back and when the foreign woman began speaking saying she was with the "Social Security" and that my "social security is being investigated" I just laughed and said "oh this must be one of those scams, the Social Security Administration doesn't call you!" and the lady hung up on me. LOL.

I got a call yesterday May 14th, 2019 from that number saying that my social security number is suspended to click 1 to find out. When I clicked the number 1 some Indian lady answered asking for my address and zip code then asked for my middle initial and said she'd call back. Then I looked this up and everyone is saying it is a scam. I got this call out of no where as well.

This just happened to me as well, it was 718 717 2890. He sounded like he was from India as well. I had received a call and missed it and so there was a voicemail saying something about suspicious activity on my social and legal actions being taken against me. I called back and he wanted me to verify information with him and promised me it was safe because the call was secured with the FBI. I just hung up. I didn't trust him. Wow.

I received the same call today from this number 1(281)2130074 cypress tx they tell me threats as you are going to have consequences and press the number 1 to talk to someone and I just hang up the call

I received the same call today from this number 1(281)2130074 cypress tx they tell me threats as you are going to have consequences and press the number 1 to talk to someone and I just hang up the call

I own a business that advertises on the internet. I get more than my fair share of scam calls. On a daily basis I get more than ten. The SSN scam is a poor quality attempt. This starts with this line ( Your social security number is -SUSPEND- not suspended. Don' be the victim. No one calls you out of the blue to give you money. They don't send random emails either. You get free money by working your back side off for it. We do not live in a nice world so keep your eyes and ears open and you're guard up. As hard as you are working to make it someone is working that hard to steal it from you.

Oh Sheila, i feel horrible for you. These scamsters prey on people who they sense are vulnerable. I have older friends who have been scammed and its almost impossible to get the money back. The credit card maybe. But these scamsters are in other countries, and they're nearly impossible to trace. They don't keep your money in american bank accounts so the us government has very little way to get it back from them. Its horrible. Hope you can lift yourself from this and rebuild. You have your kids and your health.

Outstanding - please continue to add more of these ! Keep up the good work FTC !

Usually if its legit anything government related they send something by mail and won't call.

I called social security cause they had once told me they wouldn't ask me for my social security number. Also I did call the number back and the person had a accent and I just hung up. Now I just received another secret shopper scam. What's wrong theses days.

Recently received a phone call and they told me that my social security number is about to be suspended. The number is 1 866 208 3523 ! Be aware people. The lady sounded robotic and asked me if i wanted to speask to an agent to press 1. But i simply hung up.

Yeah I called the number back the number was 347-809-3380, when they answered I heard a bunch of noise of a bunch of people having conversations over the phone with other people, so I pretended like I was worried and asked him well what is my Social Security he read off some random number that wasn't mine and I just hung up I said wow these fools ,at any rate that is one of the number they call from up above , I feel it's better to post what the numbers they're calling from so that other people will know.

Recieved the Same call on 03/25. Different number (682)615-1824

Just got call from 979-353-4764 robot voice saying my social security # is being checked for fraudulent activity to call this # back. I did and couldn't understand anything he was saying I told him his # comes up on phone being a scam, not falling for it. These people need to be stopped , all of them 20 calls or more a day by scammers on government do not call list they still all, block their #s, they call from another one and use different name, can tell same person tho. They all need to be stopped even the ones for medical braces ,& meds thru the mail just need your insurance info they are all frauds!!!!

I just got a robo call about fraud and legal action if I didn't call back and settle it before they filed charges I have severe ptsd and anxiety which in turn cause aggoraphobic episodes, it took me a bit to find out it was fraud. The call immediately triggered my issues. These scammers must be stopped. I would never do anything fraudulent, I keep a roof over my kids heads with my benefits.... What horrid people do this to others???

So just received the same type of call .. from 929-246-2586. call before charges are filed is what the system said ..

My husband and I have received several calls and txt messages today. I myself have received 4 calls and the record message left 2 messages (all the same message). I started blocking the calls and they call on a new line. These are the numbers that cave called me today... 888-810-0720 (called 2 times and left a message), 888-810-0729 (called and left a message), and 888-810-0822. Beware.

I too got 4 calls from 888-810-0965
all 1-2 hr.s apart, re SSN scam- left message. Seniors beware!

Received a call from 1866.647.4459 called it back to see because i knew they were a fraud. When they answered I asked them where their headquarters was located and they hung up in my face

I’ve been getting a lot of calls from all these numbers listed above and some of these:
‭(888) 810-0513‬
‭(888) 810-0713‬
(888) 742-7683‬
Today they’re particularly aggressive and have been calling every 30 mins since 9:30am today (it’s 2pm now)... roughly 10 times. Luckily I’m not the type to be stuck to my phone so I don’t notice until I see all the missed calls afterwards so it doesn’t bother me.

I got same call from 210-361-4940. It's funny how the phone company says they can stop these fraudulent/spoofed calls if you sign up for a monthly service, but won't lift a finger if you don't. You'd think they would want to stop people from highjacking their network.

Absolutely my feelings as well. We can either be scammed out of our money or give it to them to stop calls they should stop on their own. Everyone is in it for the money. Scam calls everyday and this social security scam was a new one. I get secret shopper emails and texts daily. Irs scam used to be one but, now it’s social security.

Just received same call. # was 866-719-7906

I received a call from someone pretending to be with social security, and they said they had an arrest warrant for me because someone had been using my social security number and they were embezzling over 10 million dollars and trafficking drugs. They said if I hung up, then they would have the arrest warrant go through and I would face up to 30 years in prison, but if I followed their instructions, then it would be canceled. They asked me for the number of the nearest police department, so I gave them the number to the Clovis Police Department. And they said they were going to talk to them about it to try to clear my name. Then they had the number of the Clovis Police Department call me and tell me that I had to go get Target gift cards with my credit and debit cards in order to safeguard my money from being seized and being associated with the money laundering that was going on with my social security number. So I went to Target and bought a $350 gift card with my remaining debit card balance and a $550 gift card with my remaining available credit.

My call was from #281-734-3076. I did not answer, they left voicemail. I do not take out of state calls.

Ive. Been getting calls from the same number and 6 other number its ridiculous they dont stop i got at least 30 scam calls a day some are for us grants and when i tell them to stop calling me and i hang up on them they call right back with another number they dont stop yesterday i was in the hospital having surgery and they were back to back calls i cant take it anymore please give me some ideas to help me stop this!

Yes they do need to be stopped and a enforcement team created to catch and prosecute them severely. Imagine how many companies nation wide are paying an employee to answer a phone. Weather it be to take a food order or simply for customer care, either way that ends up being a huge profit loss not only from the time it took them to answer a bogus call but also from the production it limited them from performing in a timely matter as they had to stop what they were doing to answer a B.S. call and in addition to that it may have blocked the ability of a real customer from connecting with that business especially if it was a small business. Huge losses if all things are considered. It may be the best solution to ID tag all phone numbers verified to an address so missuse can be prosecuted.
