This is what a Social Security scam sounds like

Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at

Received from 404/549-6045, 2019/08/01 11:19ET, pleasant female voice, "Social Security enforcement action". I hung up immediately. SCAM! SS doesn't make enforcement calls. Separately, recording claims there is an action against me, yet they don't first ID the person answering. Blind call. If legit, they'd first determine who is on phone.

Just got a call from 877-115-1634 stating that my SS# has been suspended.

1-800-784-8159 called today. It was a robo call saying that I was involved in social security fraud and will be facing charges unless I call them back to solve the issue. This is ridiculous.

I am receiving calls stating that there has been suspicious activity re: my Social Security and benefits will be suspended and a lock on my account will be placed. I pressed 1 to be directed to someone, they asked when did I receive the call, I stated just now, I can hear it is a call center and the person I was speaking with had a heavy accent, she started to ask me for personal information, I requested the telephone number to their legal department as I can tell it is a call center from a foreign country. They hung up. The numbers they are using are 800.309.9216 and 800.793.3291 . I have the VM messages they left.

I just received a call like this from 858-875-2608. These scammers are comical and getting more and more creative.

Recieved a call just now from 1-806-256-6664. Saying my ss# will be suspended.

I just got a call from 800 108 2246 he asked me how can i help you i said you all called me and then he said what's your zip code i gave him a fake one and he asked me if i moved i said No and he hung up the phone, I tried to call back and the number is not in service. Scam Scam Scam you will never get any info out of me. Sorry yall picked the wrong number

I just received a call from (1-800-772-1213) on my cell - which I never give out. A robotic female voice stated my SS# had been suspended due to suspicioius activity and I need to call them back at once. Scammers!

I received a phone call from 866-433-9813 in Texas but didn't answer the phone since I don't answer phone calls that are not in my contacts unless they send a reasonable voicemail then I call back. They left me a voicemail saying that "we have to suspend your social security number immediately. So if you need to talk to a social security officer before we suspend your social, press 1". I knew right away this was a scam and filed a complaint to the FTC website. I would be extremely cautious when answering these type of phone calls.

Someone called me from this number 1877-805-1268

I just received a call from this number 126-235-7865 this number is a high risk number , if you don't want to lose any of your Social Security DONT ANSWER THESE JERKS! hey maybe the President would like a few of these calls and then maybe something would be done about it! They need to be stopped and do time in JAIL!

I received this voicemail today... Came from
‭+1 (800) 926-8974‬ (Of course I blocked right away)

I just received call from 800-192-7587 . it was recording message about suspension about my SSI number. Immediately hang up and blocked. wondering from where they get our number

‭+1 (747) 240-5063‬ keeps calling me with the same set up, saying they are from the crime investigation department of the Social Security Administration and that my Social Security number is being suspended.

I received 4 calls within 3 hours on July 31, 2019. First from SPAIN 34 780 170 96, then followed by Adams Center, New York 315-284-2921, followed by New York City 347-801-7096 and then Cartersville, VA 804-207-8235. All I can do is block the caller, but as you can see they are coming from multiple sources. The only solution I see is if the government gets actively involved.

Beware of the number 1-800-156-1504

I just got a call today from 877-322-1488 about suspicion activity and my SS# is about to suspended. I didn't answer the phone, but a voice message was left.

Same here. I just got a call an minute ago. I normally don't answer calls unless I know who it is. I was suspicious when I heard the voicemail

Scam phone number addition 800-697-5428

I'm so happy I look this up. I got a message yesterday on the computer house line. It was from someone in New Jersey.

My elderly mother just received a call from 1.877.319.9222 claiming there was suspicious fraudulent activities linked to her social security number. When i asked what activities I was told "money laundering." When I told him this happened before and that she wasn't involved in no money laundering he said it would be taken care of. After I started to ask him to more questions along with his name he hung up the phone.

Had a missed call from 1-800-173-8394. They left a recorded voicemail saying my SS was suspended.

They [fake SSA 800-733-2263]called my cell phone today.
I have never given my cell phone number to SSA so i did not answer. The real SSA always contacts me via my home number.

I just got another call from phone number 1800-507-7587 saying that my social security number was reported and legal action is under investigation!!! To call them back!!! I know it's a scam and I'm just letting you all know!!! Do not believe what they say social security will send a letter not call you!!! Thank you for your time!!!

Got one of those calls too but it just left a phone number for you to call back on. They tried to tell hubby who is a deputy, that someone rented a car in his name and was busted for several kilos of cocaine way out in Texas and that they searched the address and several more kilos of coke was found. It’s amazing what these people will say. I wonder if the people that are making the calls are the ones getting the money or if they earn just a regular size salary...... I am so glad we aren’t that gullible. DONT FALL FOR IT!

A couple of things. The numbers will mostly vary, so it doesn’t matter where it comes from. It can be an 800 or 877 or a regular area code. Secondly, for those people that say “who would get caught into this scam”? It is often elderly people who are good at heart and their social security benefits are extremely important to them and front and center in their mind. And they might not really know how many horrible people are out there. They also don’t see notices on social media in the way younger people do, may not have anyone to ask. Someone said they posted this on Facebook, and that is a great idea. I got three calls in one day and knew that it was a scam, but I googled it to find out if there was a complaint process, which I will use, but just in case there is someone in my network who may get a call and out of fear or even curiosity, might get taken in.

I received a call from 800-754-8280 saying there were infractions against my SSN and that I needed to verify my personal info by giving him (a guy named "Michael Richmond" speaking with an Indian accent - from Houston; as well as his native Texan parents) my SSN and birth date. Bogus!

Ive received 3 calls, all from Texas numbers:
830-624-9477 - New Braunfels, TX
830-266-3353 - Texas
830-514-2340 - Texas
Very annoying. Keep saying there is suspicious activity they found with my social security.number.

received same call today from 210-880-2585 advising that my SSN has been suspended due to criminal activity. Requested I return the call and speak with "Officer Ryan" of the SSN's legal department. Robotic voice. Scammer. Further steps need to be taken to protect the public from these scam calls, especially for those on the "do not call list" which appears to be a scam in and of itself due to the consistent scam calls (and texts now) that are going to numbers on this list.

This is obviously an issue that could be fixed by the government! I received at least 5 calls a day from those idiots.
Looks like I'm not the only one. Just about everyone that I talked to have the dame issue. So dear Federal Trade Commission, I see that you soend some money with this consumer information website. Nice but we will prefer to see some result about this issue. I already missed a few doctors appointments because of it. On top of being annoying it is disturbing that you guys the FDC boss Mr Trump that suppose to understand business did not fix that yet.
Please remind him that in business we expect result!

Thank you

I got the same thing this week.

I had just got a call about my social security number and I answered and they said my number been used for a lot of stuff

What to do when you get such a call:
1. One thing is swearing at them so that they don't call again (They might give your number to other spam agencies though)
2. What I did: Gave them a wrong name and wrong SSN. They would have tested my name & SSN on some website, which would have blocked them, limiting their ability to scam others.

So sad that the people from my country (India) and Pakistan are doing this. Indian govt banned VOIP gateways in India but clearly, this is not enough.

Got the same call twice today 8/1/19 from a 1 800 157 8560 I took the call press #1 talk with somebody that sound with a Chinese accent he ask me for my SS#
I told him if u got my☎️ # u gonna suspend my benefits and u r asking me my ss# he hang up and that was it .

For the past 2 weeks I have been reciving a large amount of phone calls that I have been letting go to voice mail. Been calling me about 10 to 20 times a day. It is a robotic voice and says, "There are legal enforcement actions filed against you and your social security number is been suspected for fraudulent activities so once you get this message kindly call us back as soon as possible on our number before we begin with the legal proceedings against you that is 800-689-8270 I repeat 800-689-8270 thank you" It starts as early as 4 am and all day till 2300. The other number that is calling with the same message is 888-280-2249.

I got a call today from a number 415-630-4053 left a message to call back, a foreigner saying he is from the soc sec office that my soc sec num is part of some type of trafficking etc etc. I knew it was a scammer.

My call came from 800-376-8816.

NEVER give your personal info to a stranger who calls. SSA sends mail via the USPS. If in doubt, call the known number to inquire.

I just got one from 415-630-4053 claiming to be with the SSA and that my benefits were in jeopardy due to enforcement actions from the DEA. Be alert - give these bozo's nothing.

I just received a call Fri Aug 02, 2019 10:05:12 am from 18000200464 with a recording saying " your SS has been suspended due to suspicious activity..." and to press (1) one to be connected with them, so I did (I knew it was fake) just out of curiosity and they asked me my name, and I replied "I received a call from you, so who are you?" and they immediately hung up, and when I research the phone number I found this page.

Got a scam call on 7/26/2019 from (844)484-1882.

Started to have a heart attack until my husband calmly pointed out that the government contacts you with LETTERS, not phone calls.

I did not call them back. When i looked up the number online, i found this website, with all the complaints of scam.

I have a phone appointment with social security this afternoon. This morning I got a call from an unfamiliar number. I didn't answer. No message left. I googled the number and it came up as a number associated with SS scams. Now I am worried about answering the phone. It seems a very strange coincidence to get a SS scam call when I am waiting for them to call.

I got one yesterday from Texas and one today from Washington DC, didn't answer either. It will become that I screen every call, almost to that point anyway.

another number to add to the scam 1-830-527-3508 list.

They are using this # 830-971-7386.

I just received a call from 844-912-4213 stating my SSN was going to be suspended due to fraudulent activity. They asked me to verify my name and my social. I told to them go ahead and verify my name and number since they are the ones that called me. The lady try to convince me to give her my info. When I told her SSA only contacts people via letter she hung up on me.

Here are 2 phone numbers that these fraudsters have used in the last 2 days to call me:

Hope this helps someone!

thank you, I just got the 315-215-3868 call and i believed it was true.

I just got a new one giving the number called from and telling you ignoring it is ignorant and considered non appearance. I called them back three times then they blocked me

Add a new number 1-800-740-9588

Just received a similar call they were claiming I have legal action being taken on me. So they have changed their reason for calling.
