Probably not. At least, not from the real SSA. But how many of you have gotten calls from someone who said they were the Social Security Administration? And maybe showed the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) or a number close to it on your caller ID? Lots, right?

We’ve seen a spike in the number of people reporting those fake SSA calls to us. Since January 2018, we’ve gotten more than 63,000 reports of this scam. Three percent of those people reported a loss – and they lost $16.6 million (with a median loss of $1,484).

You can hear what the scam sounds like here. The caller usually says your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he says your bank account is about to be seized – but if you go put your money on gift cards and then give him the codes, SSA can help keep it safe. (Of course, you never want to do that, because then your money is just gone.)

To report this scam, go to ftc.gov/complaint. But if you already gave one of these callers your SSN and you're worried about identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov/ssa. And if you get one of these calls, remember:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. Your bank account is not about to be seized.
  • The real SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.
  • You can’t believe the numbers on your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake those. But if you’re worried, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can trust that number if you dial it yourself – just not on your caller ID.
  • Never give your SSN, credit card or bank account number to anyone who contacts you. Ever.

To hear more from the honest-to-goodness SSA and the FTC about these scams, follow the Facebook Live at noon tomorrow on the SSA’s Facebook page.

I was scammed yesterday and they said they were SSA and that I would need to talk with the local police department. I received a call with the number one digit off from our local police department ( it looked real) and thought it was the police. They instructed me to follow the instructions from the SSA. Very elaborate.

I got a call today stating that my SS # is being used and suspicious activity and that they well have to issue me a new SS #. His name was Carl Cady number 650-499-3026 from Mountain View California. And a detective will come to my house tomorrow to get to the bottom of this. Needless to say I’m. Or opening my door for anyone. If need to I’ll got my pit bull to handle him or her. It scared me. I called SSA and they reassured me that they would never call and that a letter from them would be issued.

I received a prepre-recorded message that stated that my social security number was being investigated by the social security administration and that a federal arrest warrant had been issued under my name but it didn't specify my name only stated that a federal arrest warrant had been issued under my name. The number that contacted me came up under my caller ID as being from Washington State. That number is 206-443-0752. Is this real? It asked me to press one to speak with someone and I hung up the phone immediately because I've seen the scan reports. Should I be concerned?

I received a call 1/2 hour ago that was prerecorded. It stated that my Social Security number was blocked and will create problems. The number called from was 800-125-6041. I hung up the phone. I called Social Security to report it, with number I found online. I called the number and was redirected to an 800-269-0271 to speak with S.S. rep. Waiting time was 60 minutes. Decided to have them call me back as that was an option. Must be busy as said call back would be in the next 120 minutes. Must be a lot of scams out there. I never share my info with anyone!
